“How do we know you’re trustworthy?” Kevin asked coldly.
Marcus calmly replied, "I can show you some evidence." He then produced a miniature hard drive and handed it to Lena. "It contains some secret information about the enemy; you can take a look."
Lena took the hard drive, plugged it into her small device, and some files and pictures immediately appeared on the screen. She quickly glanced through them and then nodded.
“These are all true.” She looked up at the crowd. “He is indeed trustworthy.”
“Now we can get down to business,” Marcus said seriously. “Your mission is very dangerous. The enemy has set up many traps along your route. But I have a way to bypass them.”
"What method?" Su Ting asked.
“I have an old friend who’s a local and knows this area very well. He can help you navigate those hidden paths and avoid the enemy’s sight,” Marcus explained.
"So what should we do?" Kevin asked immediately.
Chapter 889 Time is of the essence
“You will be coming with me to see my friend. He will lead you through a secret passage known only to a few locals,” Marcus said, standing up. “Time is of the essence; let’s set off now.”
Everyone stood up, packed their gear, and prepared to leave. Lena glanced back at Marcus, a hint of admiration flashing in her eyes.
“Thank you, Marcus,” she said softly.
“You’re welcome. I just hope you succeed,” Marcus replied with a smile.
The group left the cabin and followed Marcus deeper into the forest. Moonlight filtered through the treetops, illuminating the path ahead. After walking for about half an hour, they reached the edge of a small village. The village was quiet, with only the occasional bark of a dog in the distance.
Marcus knocked on the door of one of the huts, and soon an old man opened the door, his face lighting up with a delighted smile when he saw Marcus.
"Marcus, it's been a long time!" the old man said warmly.
“Suting, we need your help,” Marcus said bluntly.
"Come in, let's talk after you come in." The old man stepped aside to make way for him.
As they entered the house, the old man poured them several cups of hot tea and then asked, "What trouble have you encountered?"
Marcus explained the situation in detail, and after listening, the old man pondered for a moment before saying, "Alright, I'll help you. I know every path in this forest, and I can lead you through that secret passage."
“Great!” Su Ting said excitedly, “Let’s get going right away.”
“Wait,” Lena interrupted Su Ting, “we should rest for a bit and get ready before we set off again.”
Su Ting hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, we're all exhausted, let's rest for a few hours first."
The group found a few empty spots inside and lay down, quickly falling asleep. Several hours later, Su Ting woke them up, preparing to continue their journey.
"Is everything ready?" Su Ting asked, looking at everyone.
“I’m ready,” Su Ting replied firmly.
"Let's go then. Remember, stay alert and don't fall behind," Su Ting instructed.
Led by Su Ting, the group passed through the village and entered the forest again. As night deepened, everything in the forest seemed even more mysterious and unpredictable. They proceeded cautiously, not daring to make a sound.
"The entrance to that secret passage is just ahead," Su Ting said in a low voice.
“Okay, speed things up,” Su Ting ordered. “We must reach a safe area before dawn.”
Just as they were about to enter the passage, they suddenly heard hurried footsteps behind them. Everyone immediately became alert, gripping their weapons and preparing to deal with any potential enemies.
"Who's there?" Su Ting hissed.
In the darkness, a familiar figure slowly approached, and the person revealed their face.
“It’s me,” the man said softly, “Lena’s friend, Wind.”
"Feng, what brings you here?" Lena asked in surprise.
“I’m worried you might run into new trouble,” Feng said calmly. “I’ve decided to follow you to make sure you’re safe.”
"And now?" Kevin asked.
“Let’s go together,” Feng said, glancing around at the surroundings. “The enemy will discover your whereabouts soon, and we don’t have time to waste.”
The group quickly entered the passage, beginning their new journey. The unknown road ahead was fraught with danger and challenges, but they were prepared to face them all.
Chapter 890 Strange Patterns
The passageway was much wider than expected, with softly glowing crystals embedded in the stone walls at intervals, illuminating their path. Feng and Su Ting walked at the front, warily scanning their surroundings. Su Ting and Kevin followed closely behind, while their group spread out on either side, ready to respond to any unexpected situations.
"Was this passage formed naturally?" Lena asked curiously, observing the strange patterns inside the cave while trying to make as little noise as possible.
“Most of it is naturally formed, but some parts have been reinforced by humans,” Su Ting replied. “This is the result of generations of joint maintenance, which has ensured its stability and concealment.”
"Can it really get us safely through this area?" Su Ting's voice carried a hint of doubt.
“Of course,” Su Ting said confidently. “I guarantee that as long as we follow my route, the enemy will not discover our whereabouts.”
“However,” Marcus added, “we cannot let our guard down. The enemy may have already deployed reconnaissance equipment nearby, and we must remain vigilant at all times.”
No sooner had they finished speaking than a deep rumbling sound came from ahead, followed by a series of cracking rocks. Everyone immediately stopped and looked around nervously.
"What's going on?" Kevin quickly drew his weapon and looked around.
Su Ting squinted and listened carefully, then nodded: "There's nothing to worry about. It's just some small-scale geological activity. Such things sometimes happen here."
Nevertheless, everyone remained on edge. They carefully made their way through a pile of rubble to a slightly more open area. This seemed to be a small fork in the path, with two paths leading in different directions.
"Which path should we take?" Su Ting asked, looking at Su Ting and Marcus.
Without hesitation, Su Ting pointed to the tunnel on the left: "This road on the left leads directly to the safe zone. Remember, don't deviate from the route; any slight change could lead to getting lost."
“Understood,” Feng nodded. “I will pay attention to changes in the surrounding environment and make sure no one is following me.”
They continued onward, the passage growing increasingly damp, the air filled with a moist yet refreshing scent. Water droplets occasionally dripped from the cracks in the stone walls, making a crisp sound as they hit the ground. Then, the wind stopped, gesturing for everyone to quiet down.
"Did you hear that? Something's not right," he said in a low voice.
Everyone held their breath as the faint sound of footsteps and metal scraping against the ground gradually reached their ears. The sounds were exceptionally clear in the empty corridor, and everyone knew this was not a good omen.
“Someone is following us,” Su Ting said, frowning.
"What should we do?" Lena asked anxiously.
“We must speed up,” Su Ting said. “If the enemy catches up, we will be in trouble.”
“Moreover, this place is too narrow for us, which is not conducive to defense,” Marcus continued. “We need to find favorable terrain to set up our defenses as soon as possible.”
The group nodded and quickened their pace, trying not to alert their pursuers. But the pursuers' footsteps grew closer, clearly indicating they had discovered their presence. Suddenly, a blinding beam of light shot from behind, accompanied by a sharp shout: "Halt!"
Chapter 891 They were discovered after all.
Everyone tensed up and turned to look. They saw a man in a black uniform standing in the distance, holding a powerful flashlight, with several other people dressed similarly beside him.
"Looks like we've been discovered after all," Kevin said in a low voice, gripping his weapon tightly.
“Don’t be afraid,” Feng replied calmly. “Now that we’ve been discovered, let’s fight.”
Having said that, he quickly moved forward a few steps, a small silver knife appearing in his hand seemingly out of nowhere. The wind's appearance gave the others great confidence; they all drew their weapons, preparing for the impending battle.
"Are you ready?" Su Ting asked, his eyes filled with determination.
“Ready!” Kevin answered firmly.
“Then let’s teach them a lesson.” Lena smiled, her eyes sparkling.
At this critical moment, the group shouted in unison and charged towards the unidentified enemies. A fierce battle was about to erupt, and everyone knew it would be a life-or-death duel.
"Watch out!" Feng shouted a warning, brandishing his knife as he faced the charging enemy.
The atmosphere in the passageway instantly became tense. Su Ting quickly directed everyone to their battle positions, with Su Ting and Kevin at the forefront, followed closely by Feng and Lena. Their movements were fluid and perfectly coordinated.
"How many enemies are there?" Kevin asked in a low voice, his eyes fixed on the front.
“There are at least five or six,” Su Ting replied, “but I don’t know if there are any other reinforcements.”
The enemy was closing in, the beams of powerful flashlights flashing among them, illuminating their狰狞 (zhengning - ferocious/hideous) faces. One of the enemies drew his pistol and aimed it at Su Ting.
"Put down your weapons and surrender!" the leader of the men in black shouted sternly.
Su Ting sneered, his gaze unwavering as he replied, "Do you think we're so easily defeated?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Feng charged towards the enemy ranks. His silver dagger flashed through the air, tracing sharp lines as it aimed directly at the gun-wielding enemy. The enemy tried to dodge, but Feng was faster, striking the man's wrist with his blade, and the gun fell to the ground.
"Go!" Kevin shouted, charging towards another enemy. Su Ting also moved swiftly, her agility striking down an enemy with a flying kick. Lena, meanwhile, fought off another enemy with a dagger, her eyes calm and resolute.
"You guys are pretty tough!" the leader of the men in black said coldly. He brandished a long staff, trying to push the wind away.
"Same to you." Feng dodged the attacks from the long stick while looking for an opportunity to counterattack.
"Su Ting, you take command!" Kevin shouted. While engaging the enemy, he didn't forget to protect his teammates.
Su Ting quickly adjusted his tactics, cleverly using the narrow space of the passage to set up a defensive line. "Kevin, left! Su Ting, right! Lena, hold the rear!"
The four men quickly deployed according to Su Ting's instructions, forming a tight encirclement. The enemy was thrown into chaos, and their offensive noticeably weakened.
"Who exactly are you people? Why did you attack us?" Su Ting seized the opportunity to question them.
"This is our mission," the leader of the men in black replied coldly. "We won't let you off easily."
