Chapter 96 Fudge's Death and the New White Devil
Rune ultimately chose to leave Hogwarts. He took with him Professor McGonagall's "Common Misconceptions about Transfiguration," Professor Flitwick's "The Influence of Wizarding Will on Spells," and Professor Snape's "The Essentials of the Dark Arts."
Watching the boy's departing figure, Professor Flitwick sighed softly, "Who could have imagined it? Who could have imagined it?"
Snape glanced at Professor McGonagall beside him. She stood there, her posture slightly upright, her eyes deep and resolute, like two bottomless lakes. The old woman bit her lower lip tightly, her fingers curling slightly as she gripped the hem of her skirt. Now that he thought about it, she was the professor among those present who was closest to Rune.
Not long after, an article titled "The Truth Behind the Disappearance of Wizards—Where Will the Relationship Between Wizards and Muggles Go in the New Era?" was published on *The Quibbler*. The article exposed the collusion between four pure-blood families and the Umbridge wolf-fox.
The despicable act of selecting wizards who are not pure-blooded, have no powerful backers or backgrounds, and who work alone, then drugging them and making deals with Muggle leaders.
Despite the Daily Prophet's high-profile declaration that the article was pure nonsense and that Merlin's Order recipient Rune was spreading falsehoods, Fudge was killed on the spot by Rune, a third-year dropout from Hogwarts, at the Ministry of Magic the very next day. The entire British Ministry of Magic instantly descended into chaos, leaderless, and many Aurors went to Hogwarts to request Dumbledore to take charge.
After declining the third group of Aurors' invitations to join him, Dumbledore took a deep breath. He hadn't expected Rune to act so decisively and ruthlessly. Moreover, the Aurors were extremely secretive about Rune's power. It was said that when he stormed the Ministry of Magic, the statues, tables, chairs, and even the floorboards transformed into ferocious beasts under Rune's will. The Aurors couldn't even hold him off for half a quarter of an hour before being hung upside down on the wall.
Throughout the entire process, no one was injured except for Fudge himself. This precisely demonstrates that Rune's strength far surpasses that of the Aurors of the Ministry of Magic, to the point that he could even hold back in a magical duel.
Professor McGonagall entered shortly afterward. Although she knocked, she didn't actually wait for Dumbledore to open the door.
I just walked straight in.
"I know what you're going to say." Dumbledore shrugged, pushing the candy in front of him to the other side of the table. "Why don't you eat some candy first?"
"You know I'm not interested, Albus!" Professor McGonagall looked directly at Dumbledore, and only after the headmaster sighed and put the candy away did she continue, "A member of the board of trustees has died."
Dumbledore remained silent. This was perfectly normal; besides the Board of Governors, who else could access the records of the Book of Admission and the Pen of Admission? When Rune mentioned that pure-blood families were colluding with the Ministry of Magic to traffic wizards, anyone with a modicum of sense knew that Board of Governors were involved. Dumbledore and McGonagall immediately identified the suspects.
However, Dumbledore and McGonagall initially intended to remove the school board member from the board first, waiting for the situation to calm down before dealing with him. They hadn't expected Rune to be so ruthless. They had already learned from their own sources what Rune had done after leaving that day.
He took a book and went to each of the twenty-eight pure-blood families mentioned in it. For families that hadn't participated in the wizard human trafficking, Rune not only treated them with impeccable manners but also provided them with some compensation afterward. Those families that had participated in the wizard human trafficking were wiped out.
Even with their centuries-old heritage, their terrifying dark magic, and the fact that some of them had connections to the Death Eaters and remnants of the Purifiers, attempting to use this to threaten him, nothing could stop Rune from killing them. No wizard could withstand him for even a second. The British wizarding world now calls Rune the first "White Lord," attracting numerous followers and imitators.
Meanwhile, people abroad were generally just watching the spectacle. The entire British magical community being utterly humiliated by a child who had been learning magic for less than three years—wasn't that a joke?
But Dumbledore and McGonagall both knew that Rune would cause trouble for the wizarding world outside of Shanghai sooner or later. "I mean, at least let the International Confederation of Wizards know first," McGonagall sighed. She was very tired lately.
She had to appease the panicked pureblood students, help with the Three Kingdoms Tournament, and deal with Rune's departure. All these miscellaneous matters kept her up at night.
Dumbledore nodded. There were some things he couldn't say himself, but Rune had said them for him. He also despised those scoundrels who profited by exploiting their fellow countrymen. However, Dumbledore's prestige was now so high that any word he uttered might be interpreted in great detail by some.
Just like how an ancient monarch might casually remark that a certain type of taro tasted good, the region of origin of that taro might be burdened with decades of tribute obligations. And indeed, friction exists between wizards and Muggles today.
Britain is relatively better off, but in the United States, one or two wizards are shot every year. Furthermore, Muggles' technological advancements are progressing at an increasingly rapid pace, while wizards are lagging far behind, and the gap between the two will only widen. This is a consensus among all knowledgeable members of the wizarding community.
These wizards were simply burying their heads in the sand. They also hoped for a savior who could redefine the relationship between Muggles and wizards, and Rune might actually be able to. So Dumbledore didn't interfere, letting Rune kill the pure-blood families involved in the wizarding human trafficking, as well as Umbridge, and even turning a blind eye to his killing of Fudge. Dumbledore simply hoped Rune could fulfill the dreams he had mentioned in his reports.
Seeing Dumbledore nod, Professor McGonagall did not leave; she sat there quietly in a daze for a while.
"Why is Rune so skilled at killing?" Professor McGonagall murmured to herself.
Dumbledore didn't answer, but turned his head to look at another person who had come to his office—a man dressed in a black robe, with a long, hooked nose and an expressionless face.
"Because he saw those wizards being tortured," Snape rushed over and shouted. "Rune showed me what those wizards looked like. If it were me, I would make that pink toad wish he were dead!"
Although Snape's face remained as somber as ever, his voice sounded somewhat agitated.
"What's wrong?" Dumbledore asked, and Professor McGonagall also looked at Snape. Something that could make Snape happy? It probably didn't sound like good news. "Peter, that traitor Wormtail has escaped." Snape's lips even curled slightly, looking quite horrified. "I'd like to request a leave of absence."
Dumbledore and McGonagall exchanged glances. Clearly, Snape wanted to personally torture the traitor. Wormtail might think he had escaped Azkaban, but in reality, he had also lost his only refuge with Snape.
