Chapter 3 Magic Manipulation
It worked!
Dui's expression brightened with delight.
As attention wandered, the spellcasting process was interrupted, the leaves lost their support, and fell back to the ground.
However, Dui was not disappointed. He held his breath again and controlled the leaves to slowly fly up.
This time he held on for longer than before. Under his control, the leaves danced in the air until he lost focus and they fell back down.
After trying several more times, and each time the pebble was longer than the last, Dui switched to a small pebble that was slightly heavier than a leaf.
Manipulating pebbles is much more difficult than manipulating leaves. Dui seemed to have returned to the beginning, with pebbles floating shakily and then remaining still for even less time than leaves.
But Dui became more and more excited as he practiced, immersing himself in the use of magic and unaware of the passage of time.
Dui's practice was interrupted when Bilbo appeared.
Bilbo watched the practice, his eyes wide with amazement.
"Duir, are you practicing magic?"
Dui nodded slightly, somewhat embarrassed.
Strictly speaking, what he did wasn't magic; it was simply using magic to lift objects.
Moreover, the weight of the objects that can be lifted is very light, even less than the force required to throw them by hand.
It has absolutely no lethality.
But in Bilbo's eyes, this was a very magical ability.
"That's so cool!"
Bilbo looked at him with adoration in his eyes, his expression extremely excited.
"Duir, could you show it to me again? Please!"
"As you wish!"
Dui felt a surge of secret pleasure as he watched the hobbit with adoration, and he prepared to show off to the hobbit in front of him.
Then, countless flower petals in the garden, under Dui's control, rose into the air and danced around the two of them, dazzling and beautiful.
Bilbo stared at the scene with his mouth agape, his eyes wide with shock.
Over the next few days, Dui spent most of his time practicing his control over magic.
He started with small leaves and pebbles, and has now been able to control something weighing ten pounds to fly.
Moreover, the duration of his persistence has increased from two minutes at the beginning to about half an hour now.
He even started multitasking, trying to control several things to fly at the same time.
Of course, this is different from manipulating flower petals before, since that was just a brief manipulation of magic, used to show off and fool people who don't understand magic.
Now, however, he can control several items weighing several kilograms at the same time, and for a considerable period of time.
Therefore, you can often see things flying around in the living room of Bag Bottom Hole.
At first, it's things that aren't easily broken, but as you get more skilled, it's things like water cups, teapots, and plates.
Bilbo went from being shocked at first to getting used to it. Sometimes, when he was too lazy to move or didn't want to reach for something that was far away, he would simply ask Dui to help him fly over with magic.
On this day, Dui temporarily stopped practicing magic.
Because the food stored in Bag End was almost used up by the two of them, he and Bilbo were going to the village to buy ingredients.
As you walk down the winding path through the Shire's pastoral landscape, you'll see two or three hobbits working in the fields along the way.
When the hobbits see Dui, a human of obvious height, they all stop and look at him with curiosity.
There are no secrets in Hobbiton; the news that a human had come to Bilbo Baggins' house had already spread throughout the entire town.
However, in the eyes of the hobbits, Bilbo Baggins was a reclusive person who didn't like to socialize.
Therefore, no one took the initiative to come to Bag Bottom Cave to inquire about information.
After passing the stone mill and crossing the double-arched bridge, you soon arrive at the central area of Hobbiton.
The hobbit houses here are different from Bag End; they are more like human-built structures, though still low and suitable for hobbits to live in.
Moreover, this place is home to the only inn here—the Green Dragon Inn, the favorite gathering place for the hobbits.
The market was bustling with people, and the Hobbits brought out their local specialties to sell, and even bartered.
The women haggled over prices, while the children happily darted through the crowd.
Dui stood out in the crowd; everyone who passed by would look at him.
Adults tend to be more discreet, but children are a different story.
Several little hobbits curiously gathered around, one of them even tugged at his clothes and asked with clear, innocent eyes, "Are you human?"
Dui looked at the tiny child, who was barely up to his knees, smiled, patted his head, and nodded: "Yes."
Bilbo, not wanting Duir to be looked down upon, coughed a few times to draw attention before puffing out his chest and declaring loudly, "Duir isn't just human, he's a wizard!"
"Wow!" The little hobbits gaped, looking utterly shocked.
The surrounding hobbits were also very surprised, and their curiosity about Dui was now tinged with awe.
After all, wizards have always been seen as powerful and mysterious figures in Middle-earth.
But the children, unaware of the concept of reverence, became even more curious and pestered Dui to see the magic.
Dui did not refuse. He gently tapped their hats, and the hats seemed to come alive, flapping their ear flaps and flying around them.
The children exclaimed in surprise, and then happily chased after the hat.
The hobbits who witnessed all of this were equally shocked.
Bilbo was very pleased with this and coughed, feigning seriousness.
"Well, Duir, we should go."
Duyle nodded with amusement, following behind the hobbit who looked as if he had won a battle.
After Bilbo finished shopping at the market, Dui went to the only blacksmith shop in Hobbiton.
The blacksmith was taken aback for a moment when he saw Dui, this human, arrive, but still stepped forward to greet him, "What does the guest need?"
Dui looked around and found that the place mainly sold agricultural tools such as hoes, as well as kitchen knives and axes.
Do you sell weapons here? Like longswords.
The shopkeeper gave him a strange look, then shook his head. "Hobbits don't like fighting, and longswords and other weapons have no market here, so we don't sell those."
Dui was somewhat disappointed, but he still continued to ask, "If I want to order a custom-made one, how long will it take?"
The shopkeeper shook his head again. "I'm sorry, sir, although I'd love to do business with you, we've never forged longswords before and have absolutely no experience."
"If you really want to buy a good quality sword, I suggest you go to the town of Buri, east of the Shire. It's a town for you humans, and they are very good at forging weapons. You might be able to buy the weapon you want there."
Dui shook his head.
According to Bilbo, the distance from Hobbiton to the town of Burri is about 135 miles, which would take at least six or seven days to walk.
He currently has no plans to travel to the town of Brie.
Since he couldn't buy any weapons, Dui simply picked out two cleavers from the blacksmith's shop.
Although the blacksmith said he couldn't forge weapons, the kitchen knives he forged were of very good quality, especially the bone-chopping knives, which were thick and sharp and could easily cut through the bones of pigs, cows, and sheep.
In the owner's words, the kitchen knives he produces can last a lifetime.
Dui expressed his doubts, but he still readily paid the money.
As for the source of the money, Dui naturally borrowed it from Bilbo.
He's a penniless wretch, currently living off Bilbo's kindness, and he can't even guarantee when he'll be able to pay him back.
However, the kind-hearted hobbits didn't mind and had no intention of asking him to pay it back.
So Dui is very glad that Bilbo was the first person he met, otherwise he wouldn't be so relaxed now!
