Chapter 5 Standard Spells
Hearing the interrogative tone, Dui looked at him suspiciously.
"Hello, may I ask who you are?"
"I am Robin Smallberg, the sheriff of Big Hole."
Dui was somewhat surprised, not expecting to encounter the Hobbit police.
"Hello, Sheriff Robin, I'm Duir. I just arrived from Hobbiton and am on my way to travel around the Shire."
"You're that wizard Duir?!"
"Huh? Sheriff, you know me?"
"Well, the news of a wizard coming to Hobbiton has already spread throughout the Shire. I didn't expect you to come to Big Hole Town," the sheriff explained after realizing what had happened.
Upon learning Dui's identity, Sheriff Robin's attitude changed drastically, and he warmly welcomed Dui's arrival.
Led by Sheriff Robin, Dui checked into the town's only hotel, "Birds and Babies Inn".
Besides the strange name, the inn's height was also unfriendly to him; when he stood up straight, his head easily touched the roof.
The bed in the inn was a bit small for him, so the innkeeper had to push two beds together so that he could barely stretch his legs and sleep.
[Hogwarts Check-in System: Location: Shire - Great Hole Town. Check-in now?]
The system entry appeared again.
Dui was overjoyed and quickly called out, "Sign in!"
[Sign-in successful! Congratulations on receiving the Hogwarts First Year Charms textbook, "Standard Spells for Beginners"!]
A phantom spellbook appeared out of thin air and floated in front of Dui.
Dui discovered that the book would turn the pages according to his will, and immediately opened the spellbook without hesitation.
The first-grade spell textbook is not complicated. It only contains five basic and simple spells: the Glowing Charm, Levitation Charm, Fire Charm, Lockpicking Charm, and Repair Charm. None of them have any offensive power.
But Dui was very satisfied; this was the first time he had ever encountered a spell since he had traveled through time.
Previously, despite possessing magic, he could only use the most rudimentary methods to control objects to fly.
It looks similar to the Levitation Spell, but it is very mentally and magically demanding. You cannot be distracted at all during the process and need to concentrate fully on controlling the cleaver's attack.
This means that when controlling the cleaver against the enemy, he cannot be distracted and becomes an easy target.
Unlike spells, which act as a stable anchor point, spells only require focused attention at the moment of casting. Once successfully cast, you only need to maintain the output of magical power.
It can be said that the magical effect is very stable.
Dui skimmed through the spellbook and then began learning the simplest glow spell.
After carefully and meticulously reading and memorizing the principles of this spell, as well as the casting techniques and actions.
Dui began to attempt to cast a spell.
"Fluorescent lights!"
Since he didn't have a wand, Dui simply imitated the motions of a wand swing, waving his hand barehanded.
The first attempt failed.
Dui was not disappointed. After all, even the simplest spell is just a wandless spell if cast with bare hands.
Wandless spellcasting is an extremely advanced spellcasting technique. Apart from a few powerful wizards who can master it, ordinary wizards cannot even cast spells silently, let alone cast spells without a wand.
Therefore, most wizards in the magical world, once they lose their wands, are not much stronger than Muggles in combat.
Thanks to Dui's persistent efforts,
A faint light emanated from Dui's fingertips, like the glow of a firefly, and it quickly went out.
But it gave Dui a much-needed boost and a renewed sense of hope.
"Fluorescent lights!"
Perhaps motivated by success, after chanting the incantation once more, a white light flickered at the tip of Dui's index finger, like candlelight, illuminating Dui's joyful smile.
the next day,
Sheriff Robin took the initiative to invite Dui to visit various attractions in Big Hole Town.
For example, the municipal office building, the Municipal Cave, was warmly received by Mayor Charles.
Unlike the outside world, the Shire is very loosely governed and managed, and it has always followed ancient laws. Basically, every town and village is self-governing, and the Hobbits voluntarily abide by their obligations.
Therefore, the mayor is basically only responsible for organizing banquets, managing the post office and security, and is elected every seven years.
After visiting the Municipal Cave, Inspector Robin took him to visit the Mason House—Shire's museum.
"Mason" means useless in Shire hobbit slang, so the Mason House contains items that hobbits consider useless to keep but too valuable to discard.
However, when Dui arrived at the Hobbit museum, he was greatly surprised.
Because the items collected in Mason House, in addition to ancient objects representing the history of the Hobbits, also include a considerable number of weapons such as bows and arrows, spears, armor, longswords, and axes.
Dui came to a bow and arrow.
The bow and arrow in front of me were made of some kind of wood, orange-yellow in color, as hard as iron yet very flexible, and carved with beautiful and elegant patterns.
"It's said to be a bow and arrow used by an elf; anyway, it's been here for a long time."
Seeing his interest in bows and arrows, Sheriff Robin offered to explain.
Dui was surprised to hear this.
I never expected that this place would have an elven bow and arrow.
Then, Sheriff Robin showed him several pieces of armor and axes that were supposedly made by dwarves.
These suits of armor were clearly made for hobbits, and they still bear the marks of being hacked and slashed, indicating that a hobbit once wore them during a brutal battle.
Dui found it hard to imagine what kind of enemy could have driven these gentle and friendly hobbits to take up arms and fight so fiercely.
Finally, Dui stood before a suit of gleaming silver chainmail.
The chainmail was woven from countless silver rings, resembling a vest, soft yet extremely strong.
However, Dui noticed that the chainmail vest was quite large, and seemed more suited to someone of Dui's height and build.
"It's said that this is chainmail made by dwarves. It's incredibly strong, unbreakable by swords or fire, but we hobbits can't wear it, so it's just kept in the Maple House as a collection," Sheriff Robin explained.
Dui was very tempted by the chainmail vest.
He's a fragile wizard now and desperately needs a protective shield.
"Sheriff Robin, I need this chainmail. Is it for sale?"
Sheriff Robin shook his head.
"I'm sorry, although the items in Masong House are useless, they belong to the common property of the residents of Dadong Town. If Wizard Duir wants to obtain them, he will probably need the consent of the entire town."
Dui was somewhat disappointed upon hearing this.
But then Sheriff Robin changed his tone and said with a smile:
"However, if you, Wizard Duir, could demonstrate your magic at the banquet, I think everyone would be happy to grant your request."
"What kind of banquet?"
"In five days, it will be the 1200th anniversary of the founding of our town, Dadong. The whole town will hold a celebration banquet in Dadong Hall, and you will be very welcome to join us!"
Upon hearing the news, Dui agreed without hesitation.
He originally planned to sign in here and then leave.
But now, in order to get the chainmail vest, he should stay here for a few more days.
