Chapter 12 Defense Against the Dark Arts Class
Defense Against the Dark Arts is a core course at Hogwarts. In this course, students learn how to resist various types of dark magic, including dark magical creatures and dark spells. However, for first-year wizards, they can only listen to the professor on the podium explaining dry knowledge from textbooks that have been around for who knows how many years.
Speaking of textbooks, Lux has a lot to complain about. The current textbooks at Hogwarts are extremely poorly written. The key parts are always glossed over, and sometimes there are even errors. How much you can learn in each class depends entirely on the professor.
It's clear that the current Defense Against the Dark Arts professor is just a bookworm. This old man named Turak makes one doubt whether he can cast a complete Armor Charm. Last week, when he was demonstrating the Disarm Charm, instead of red sparks, his wand tip burst out with a cloud of gray smoke, which nearly made the young wizards in the front row fall to the ground in fright.
Lux drew a tongue-out face on the cover of "Theory of Defense Against Magic" with a quill pen. The textbook, with its yellowed cover, was revised in 1772. It was older than the United States itself, but Professor Thurak on the stage didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with it.
It wasn't that Lux was particularly eager to learn, but rather that she had already learned most of the basic spells in her first-year spell class. This meant that her gold wouldn't increase unless she learned new spells, and since buying the gauntlets, she only had 210 gold left.
Then, for each new spell learned, Lux is rewarded with 10 gold coins. After accumulating 400 gold coins, this reward has remained unchanged for a month.
Besides spell classes, what other classes can teach spells?
Defense Against the Dark Arts course.
"So," Lux nudged Tom with her elbow, "we might as well go to the library and find a reliable notebook, or we can just go find Dumbledore. That guy is so incompetent; I swapped all his specimens and he didn't even notice."
Tom's gaze passed over Lux's shoulder and landed on the display case behind the podium. There stood a withered mandrake specimen, its label clearly reading "Werewolf Fur." Professor Turac was examining the clump of withered grass with a magnifying glass, muttering to himself, "Look closely, students, this is the most dangerous gland of dark magical creatures..."
Suddenly, a faint scratching sound came from the specimen cabinet. Tom noticed that in the glass jar used as a "teaching aid," Grindelwald, who should have been unconscious, was frantically scratching the jar wall with his sharp claws, his cloudy eyes fixed on the back of the professor's neck.
Turak, oblivious to all this, continued flipping through the torn lecture notes: "Next, we'll learn about... uh, these... um, aquatic dark magic creatures..."
Tom didn't respond immediately to Lux's words, but simply nodded at her. His gaze swept over the display case behind the podium, then returned to Lux's face, his eyes showing a rare hint of approval.
When the bell rang, Professor Tulak seemed relieved as he walked out of the classroom with the torn lecture notes, not even noticing that the hem of his robe brushed against the ink bottle next to the podium, leaving a small stain of dark ink on the floor.
The young wizards in the classroom began packing up their things, and the noise gradually rose. Lux stuffed her quill into her bag and patted Tom's arm: "Let's go, let's go to the library." Tom responded, and the two walked out of the classroom one after the other, heading down the corridor towards the library.
As Lux walked, she said, "I'm sure there's something better in the library than in the textbooks. What Tulak talks about is at least 50 years out of date."
Tom hummed in agreement and glanced at her sideways. "Do you think we can find a suitable book?"
"It's never a bad thing to try," Lux said. "If all else fails, try to sneak into the restricted section; you might find something there."
As they spoke, the two arrived at the library entrance, where it was so quiet that only the sound of turning pages and the occasional cough could be heard. Mrs. Pince stood behind the counter, holding a quill pen, writing something in the register. Tom and Lux walked quietly along the bookshelves, and soon found the area marked "Defense Against the Dark Arts".
The bookshelves here were taller than elsewhere, filled with books of various dark-colored covers. Lux stood on tiptoe, trying to reach a book on the top shelf, and Tom reached out to take it down for her; Tom had grown a little taller recently.
The book cover had no title, only a complex magical symbol. Lux opened to the first page; the handwriting was neat, and the content seemed profound. Just as she was about to continue reading, Mrs. Pince suddenly appeared beside them. "What are you doing?"
Lux closed the book and looked up at Mrs. Pince. "Madam, we'd like to borrow this book." Mrs. Pince's gaze lingered on the badges on their chests for a moment, then she frowned. "First-year students are not allowed to borrow these kinds of books; it's the rule."
"Why?" Lux pressed. "We just want to learn more."
"There's no reason why, that's just the headmaster's rule," Mrs. Pince said. "Put the book back and get out of the restricted section right now, or I'll have to tell your prefect." Tom tugged at Lux's arm, signaling her not to argue. Lux reluctantly put the book back on the shelf and followed Tom out of the library.
"This is outrageous!" Lux couldn't help but complain as soon as she stepped out of the library. "Just because we're first-years, we can't read these books?"
Tom was silent for a moment, then said, "Perhaps we can look for another way." "What way?" Lux asked. Tom shook his head: "I haven't thought of anything yet. Let's go back and talk about it first."
For the next few days, Lux tried to find a solution to the problem of accessing information, but without success. They tried asking older students, but they either didn't know or were unwilling to help. Lux even considered sneaking into the library at night, but Tom stopped her.
"It's too risky," Tom said. "If you get caught, you'll be punished, and then you'll drag me down with you. It's purely a matter of getting me into trouble."
Although Lux was unwilling, she knew Tom was right, so she had no choice but to give up the idea for the time being. She had already received two disciplinary actions and lost 50 points in the three months since the start of the semester.
It was Charms class again, and Professor Flitwick taught everyone to practice the Restoration Charm. Lux learned very quickly as usual. Professor Flitwick noticed her unhappiness and called her to his office after class.
"Lux, your talent for spells is quite good," Professor Flitwick said with a smile, sitting in his chair and looking at Lux standing in front of him. "I heard you weren't very satisfied with Defense Against the Dark Arts? You even replaced all the teaching materials in Turalyon?" Lux was taken aback, not expecting the professor to know about this. She nodded, "Yes, Professor, those textbooks are old enough to be my grandfathers, and they have many mistakes."
"Of course we know, and we ask for your understanding. When I was a student at Hogwarts, Mr. Tulak was already a well-established Auror. He's just getting old, and in a few years he might not be teaching at Hogwarts anymore." Professor Flitwick nodded. "But I understand how you feel. In fact, many years ago, I had the same dissatisfaction with those textbooks."
Lux's eyes lit up: "Professor, do you have any ideas?" Professor Flitwick thought for a moment and said, "I have a Hufflepuff student who is very knowledgeable about all kinds of spells and has compiled a lot of notes. I can introduce you to her; perhaps she can help you."
Lux was overjoyed: "Really? Thank you so much, Professor!" "You're welcome," Professor Flitwick said. "Her name is Miranda Gossack, and she's the president of the student council. I'll tell her later that you can find her at the library after school."
"Yes, Professor," Lux said gratefully. After school, Lux went to the library as Professor Flitwick had instructed. Under Mrs. Pince's watchful eye, she entered the library, which was bustling with activity. Many students were chatting, playing chess, or reading.
Lux looked around, searching for Miranda Goshak, whom Professor Flitwick had mentioned. "Are you Lux?" a clear voice called out from behind. Lux turned around and saw an upperclassman with chestnut hair standing there. She was wearing a school robe with the badge of the student council president pinned to her chest. Her hair was neatly combed, and she had a gentle smile on her face.
"Yes, I'm Lux," Lux said. "Are you Miranda?"
Miranda nodded. "I am Miranda. Professor Flitwick has told me about you. Are you not satisfied with the current teaching materials?"
“Yes, senior,” Lux replied, “the content in those textbooks is too outrageous. Some things are outdated from half a century ago, many key points are not explained clearly, and there are quite a few errors. I want to learn more useful knowledge, but the books in the library won’t let us read them.”
Miranda smiled and said, "I had the same problem as you back then. Those textbooks were really not very good; a lot of practical things were overlooked."
"So how did you solve it?" Lux asked eagerly. Miranda took a thick notebook out of her backpack and handed it to Lux: "These are my notes. There's a lot of content that's not in the textbooks, and some spells that you only learn in higher grades. But don't worry, there's no dark magic in them, just practical defensive techniques."
Lux took the notebook, opened it, and saw that the handwriting inside was clear and neat. It not only contained detailed explanations of the spells but also practice methods. Lux became more and more excited as she read, her eyes lighting up. She looked up at Miranda and said, "Senior, this is so precious! Can I really borrow it?"
"Of course," Miranda said. "Seeing how diligent and eager you are to learn, I'm sure you'll make good use of it. But be careful not to let anyone else know about this, especially the professors, to avoid causing unnecessary trouble."
"I understand, thank you Miranda!" Lux carefully put the notebook into her bag, then bowed deeply to Miranda.
"It's alright," Miranda said. "If there's anything you don't understand, you can come to me anytime."
"Okay, senior." Lux said, then happily left the library with her notebook. Back in her dorm, Lux immediately took out Miranda's notes and began to read them carefully. The notes were much richer than she had imagined, even containing detailed instructions on how to identify the weaknesses of dark magic creatures, as well as practice methods for some simple and effective defensive spells. One of the spells was for dealing with spiders, completely different from the one in the textbook. Lux tried it out using the method in the notes and found that it was indeed much more effective than the spell in the textbook.
"Thanks to Miranda for open source, little Lux can also learn something." Lux's lips curled up at the thought of the spells in her notes gradually turning into money on the system panel.
