Chapter 252 A Money Laundering Operation
After the operation began, Lynn personally led the team, driving a black law enforcement vehicle followed by several police cars. The team quickly drove towards the upscale bar in the city center. The bar was brightly lit outside, with celebrities and wealthy businessmen coming and going; everything seemed calm and normal.
Lynn got out of the car at the bar entrance and signaled his men to spread out and block the exit. He strode towards the bar entrance, where a security guard tried to stop him: "Sir, this is a private place; you cannot enter without permission."
Lynn produced his identification and said coldly, "FBI, we suspect illegal transactions and money laundering activities are taking place here. We are conducting an immediate raid. Everyone, cooperate with our operation."
The security guard looked flustered, clearly not expecting this action. He stammered as he tried to stop them, but Lynn and his men had already pushed the gate open.
Inside the bar, the lights were dim, the music was deafening, and lavishly dressed patrons were enjoying a luxurious nightlife. As soon as Lynn entered, he raised his voice and shouted, "Listen up, everyone! This place has been sealed off. Cease all activities immediately and cooperate with our investigation!"
Chaos erupted at the scene. The guests were startled by the sudden raid and looked around frantically. Some tried to slip away, but were stopped by the agents who were already waiting at the exit.
Lynn's gaze swept across every corner of the bar, and he quickly directed the agents to begin their operation: "Search every room, especially the basement! Ledgers, computers, surveillance footage—take everything that can be used as evidence."
Mark led several agents directly into the office behind the bar, where there was a hidden safe. After prying it open, they found several ledgers and some encrypted hard drives.
"Detective!" Mark quickly reported the discovery to Lynn. "The ledgers and hard drives are here; they're very likely the evidence we need."
Lynn nodded, then looked at another agent: "Take these things back to the station and hand them over to the technical team for analysis immediately."
Meanwhile, the bar manager was brought before Lynn. He was pale and his voice was frantic: "Detective, this is just an ordinary bar! We haven't been involved in any illegal activities!"
Lynn stared at him coldly, her voice carrying a sense of oppression: "A normal bar? Ledgers, unusual funds, encrypted hard drives—are these all routine operating procedures for a normal bar? I suggest you start cooperating with our investigation now, otherwise you'll be an accomplice in Coleman's evil deeds."
The manager, sweating profusely, nodded repeatedly, "I...I'm just in charge of management! I don't know anything!"
Lynn wasted no more time and signaled to the agents to take him away. The entire operation was swift and orderly; in less than an hour, everyone in the bar had been cleared out, the items involved in the case had been sealed off, and the scene was completely under control.
Lynn walked out of the bar and stood in the night, watching the lavish neon lights be extinguished one by one. His face remained impassive; he knew this was only the first step. But this single blow was enough to unsettle Coleman.
Back at the station, Lynn looked at the pile of ledgers and hard drives on the table and said coldly, "Analyze these things thoroughly. We need to find deeper clues and shut down every possible escape route for Coleman."
Coleman sat in his luxurious study, his face grim. His whiskey glass was empty; he slammed it down on the table with a jarring clang. He could feel the pressure mounting—Lynn's raid had cost him dearly, and his men were beginning to waver, some even turning themselves in to the FBI.
"I can't wait any longer," Coleman muttered, grabbing his phone and dialing an encrypted number.
A few minutes later, a tall, cold-eyed mutant stood before Coleman. He wore a dark trench coat, his back conveying a silent and dangerous aura. Coleman lit a cigar and said in a low voice, "I need you to handle a problem for me. The target is Lynn Stacy."
The mutant tilted his head slightly, his voice cold: "My prices are high, especially when it comes to FBI agents."
"Money is no object," Coleman said with a sneer. "As long as you can get rid of him completely, his name and photo have been sent to you. Remember, I need it to be clean and efficient, leaving no trace."
The mutant nodded and turned to leave.
A few days later, Lynn was leaving the police station. He had just finished a long meeting; the night was deep, and the streets were deserted. Lynn walked to his car, and as soon as he opened the door, he felt a dangerous aura approach. He quickly stepped back, and a blade of air grazed past his ear, shattering the car window.
He turned around and saw a tall figure slowly emerge from the shadows, his gaze icy, and pale blue energy shimmering in his palms. Lynn immediately realized that this man was a mutant, and a deadly assassin at that.
"Lynn Stacy," the man's deep voice rang out, "someone paid a hefty price to kill you. Sorry, it's just business."
Lynn didn't answer, but instead swiftly drew his gun from his waist, his gaze sharp as an eagle's. He knew his opponent was no ordinary foe and he had to proceed with caution.
The assassin made his move, his speed astonishing. Energy surged in his hands as he swung them directly at Lynn. Lynn rolled to dodge, aiming his gun at his opponent, only to find that the assassin's reaction was extremely fast, and the bullet was deflected by the energy wave.
"You've got some skills," Lynn muttered, quickly pulling out his communicator and pressing an emergency call button. "This is Lynn. I've been attacked, suspected to be by mutants. Need backup immediately!"
The assassin sneered, "Call for backup? You'll be dead before they get here."
He charged forward again, forcing Lynn to retreat repeatedly, but Lynn's gaze remained calm. He noticed that while the assassin's attacks were fierce, they required a brief period of charging. He calmly analyzed his opponent's weaknesses, searching for an opportunity to counterattack.
During one of his evasive maneuvers, Lynn kicked a piece of metal from the ground at the assassin's face. The assassin instinctively turned his head to dodge, and in that instant, Lynn decisively struck, grabbing the car door and slamming it into the assassin's waist, causing him to lose his balance.
The assassin roared, and the energy surged instantly, sending Lynn staggering back several steps. But just then, the sound of police sirens rang out in the distance, and the assassin's expression darkened further.
"Looks like it's time to retreat," the assassin said in a low voice, attempting to turn and leave.
Lynn stood up quickly, sneering, "You think I'd let you leave?"
He pulled out a special stun grenade and threw it at his opponent with all his might. The grenade exploded in mid-air, releasing a powerful electromagnetic wave that instantly disrupted the assassin's energy, causing him to collapse to his knees in agony.
Taking advantage of the moment, Lynn rushed forward and used specially made handcuffs to restrain the assassin's wrists, completely limiting his abilities. Reinforcements arrived at that moment and quickly subdued the assassin.
Lynn, panting, wiped the blood from his face, looked down at the assassin, and said coldly, "Tell me, who hired you?"
The assassin gritted his teeth and remained silent, but a hint of wavering appeared in his eyes.
Lynn grabbed his collar, her voice icy: "It's fine if you don't want to talk. I already know it's Coleman. I'll make him understand that every step he takes is just digging his own grave."
The assassin's expression finally changed, and he said in a low voice, "You've won... It really was him. He paid a high price to make you disappear forever."
Lynn released his grip, signaling the agents to take the assassin away. Watching the danger dissipate in the night sky, his gaze hardened.
"Coleman, you've used up all your cards," Lynn said in a low voice. "Now it's your turn to pay the price."
The next day.
Lynn stood in the corridor outside the courthouse, his gaze cold and fixed on the distance. Coleman was charged with hiring a murderer, a charge that could temporarily deprive him of his freedom, but Lynn knew this was only the first step. The legal team behind the opposing side would not allow Coleman to stay in prison for long.
Inside the courtroom, Coleman's legal team had already begun their work. Their lead attorney, Philip Black, a defense lawyer known for his tough and efficient approach, was petitioning the judge for bail.
"Your Honor," Philip said in his usual calm tone, "my client, Alan Coleman, is a well-known businessman in this city. He has a fixed address and stable social connections, and there is no risk of him fleeing. Furthermore, the charges against him lack direct evidence, and the confession of a single suspect is insufficient to prove his guilt."
The latest novel is first published here!
Lynn sat in the gallery, arms crossed, his eyes fixed on the judge's expression. He knew this struggle was not just a contest of law, but also a battle for resources and power.
The prosecutor rose to retort: "Your Honor, we have clear evidence that the defendant, Alan Coleman, instructed a mutant to kill FBI Inspector Lynn Stacy. This is not only a challenge to the law but also a serious threat to public safety. We strongly request that bail be denied to ensure that the defendant can no longer pose a threat to the safety of others."
Philip sneered, his tone sharp as he retorted, "The so-called 'clear evidence' is nothing more than a professional hitman's one-sided confession, and there is no written or physical evidence of monetary transactions to support it. The prosecution's charges are clearly insufficient to stand."
Lynn couldn't sit still any longer. He stood up and walked towards the prosecutor, saying in a low voice, "Request an extension of the detention period, and also request an urgent review of Coleman's assets and communications records. We need time to uncover more evidence."
The prosecutor nodded and quickly submitted an application to the judge: "In order to further investigate and confirm the substance of the case, we request the court to grant an extension of the detention period, and at the same time allow for an urgent review of the defendant's assets and communication records."
The judge struck the gavel, temporarily denying Coleman's bail application while approving the prosecution's request for investigation.
After the court hearing, Coleman was taken back to his cell, while his legal team gathered to plot their next move. Lynn watched all this, knowing full well that this battle was far from over.
Back at the FBI field headquarters, Lynn immediately assembled his team to plan the next steps. Pointing to the investigation checklist on the screen, he said, "Coleman is currently in custody, but his legal team won't let this go. We must find solid evidence as quickly as possible to definitively prove his guilt."
Mark asked, "Where do we start? His assets, his communication records, or his men?"
Lynn stated firmly, "A three-pronged approach. His assets and communication records could expose more transactions and instructions, and the testimonies of his subordinates, especially those who just surrendered, are also crucial. The greater the pressure, the more likely they are to reveal."
The team sprang into action, with Lynn personally participating in the interrogation of Coleman's men. He entered the interrogation room, his cold gaze sweeping over the men at the table: "You have two choices: remain silent, or tell us the whole truth and get a chance for leniency."
The subordinate was clearly wavering. He said in a low voice, "Okay... I can tell you. But you must guarantee that I won't be retaliated against by Coleman's men."
Lynn nodded: "You'll assist us, and we'll guarantee your safety. Now, begin."
Meanwhile, the technical team was also conducting an in-depth analysis of Coleman's communication records. A deeply hidden encrypted message was finally decoded, revealing that Coleman did indeed have direct contact with the mutant assassin, and also mentioned some hidden accounts and transaction records.
When this information was presented to Lynn, he took a deep breath and said coldly, "These are the chains he cannot escape."
Lynn barely rested, spending the entire time in his office poring over mountains of documents. He knew that the period while Coleman was still in custody was crucial. Once he was released on bail, hidden evidence might be destroyed, and those willing to testify might be threatened.
Mark walked in carrying two cups of coffee and placed one on Lynn's desk: "Detective, you haven't slept for two days. Although we all know time is of the essence, you need to stay alert."
Lynn took the coffee, took a sip, and said, "I don't have time to think about that. Coleman's criminal network is too well hidden. If we can't find substantial evidence in this time, his legal team will do everything they can to get him out."
Mark nodded and handed Lynn a report: "This is what the tech team just compiled. They discovered the flow of funds in several key accounts that are directly linked to several well-known companies."
Lynn took the report and carefully reviewed it. His gaze quickly settled on a set of numbers, and his brow furrowed slightly: "The flow of these funds is suspicious. They passed through multiple offshore accounts, seemingly legitimate investments, but the final destination was a fictitious shell company."
Mark interjected, "What's even more interesting is that this company has a purchase contract directly linked to one of Coleman's subsidiaries. On the surface, it looks like a normal business transaction, but in reality, it's a money laundering operation."
Lynn sneered, "Coleman is quite the old fox, using so many layers to conceal the source of his funds. But he forgot one thing: no matter how the funds flow, they will eventually leave traces." (End of Chapter)
