The man was wearing a cleaner, moon-white long gown today, and his hair was neatly combed. He was smiling as he took the pulse of an old woman.

While taking her pulse, the old woman kept nodding as he asked her questions.

After taking her pulse, he took out a few silver needles from his cloth bag and inserted two needles into the old woman's wrist. His technique looked quite skillful.

After the acupuncture was finished, the old lady stretched her wrists, her wrinkled face breaking into a smile, and took out a few copper coins from her pocket and handed them over.

The doctor took it, smiled and nodded, and then began to greet the next patient.

Lin Xiuer glanced at it twice, but found nothing special and didn't pay much attention.

It's not unusual to find itinerant doctors in the market.

It was common for country folk going to the market to spend two or three coins to have a doctor take their pulse and give them a few acupuncture treatments, rather than going to a proper clinic.

She looked away and went back to her own business.

After a while, the doctor, who had finished his work at some point, was looking in this direction.

Seeing Lin Xiuer look up, he nodded slightly as a greeting.

Lin Xiuer was taken aback for a moment, then nodded in return, thinking to herself that this person was quite polite.

Ping An was helping to collect money and hand out cakes when he followed Lin Xiuer's gaze and met the doctor's eyes.

The doctor smiled, a very kind smile, then lowered his head and continued fiddling with his rolls of silver needles.

Ping An's gaze lingered on him for a moment, then subtly withdrew.

"The egg pancake is ready—whose?" Lin Xiuer called out, holding up the pancake.

"Mine! Mine!" The young man at the front of the line quickly reached out his hand.

Ping An took the cake, handed it over, and accepted the money.

The doctor across the street occasionally looked up and glanced this way, his gaze sweeping over Lin Xiuer before settling on Ping An. Then he lowered his head and continued to take the pulse of the next elderly woman.

As the sun rose higher, the market grew increasingly lively. After selling the last pancake, Lin Xiuer rubbed her aching shoulders.

There were so many people at the market today that she felt like she was going to break her wrists.

But looking at the money box full of copper coins, I felt a sense of satisfaction, and all the hard work was worth it.

Just as I finished packing up my stall, I heard Chen Mingxuan's loud voice coming from the crowd.

"Xiuer! Xiuer! We're here!"

Lin Xiuer looked up and saw Chen Mingxuan and Wu Liangcai squeezing through the crowd, with two little followers behind them.

One person was carrying a hoe, and the other was carrying a bamboo basket on their back; they looked quite presentable.

Wu Liangcai, covered in sweat from running, eagerly asked as soon as he arrived, "Sister Lin, we're ready, let's set off now."

These people were even more enthusiastic than she was.

"Okay." Lin Xiuer put the last few bowls into the cart. "Let's do as much as we can while it's still early."

Hu Yidao also packed up his stall and came over, carrying a cloth bag in his hand: "Sister, I brought some dry food and water. You can eat them when you get tired from working later."

Lin Xiuer felt a warmth in her heart: "Brother Hu is so thoughtful."

The group headed to the west of the town in a grand procession.

Passing by the blacksmith shop, Lin Xiuer stopped and went in to buy a few handy hoes.

Zhang the blacksmith was a dark-skinned man. When he heard that so many of them were going to clean up that wicked garden, his eyes widened in surprise.

While handing him the hoe, he muttered, "You guys are really brave."

Lin Xiuer was too lazy to explain, so she paid and left.

When we arrived at the gate of the abandoned garden, the crooked gate was still the same as yesterday, not closing properly and just left ajar.

"Come in." Lin Xiuer pushed open the door.

The group placed their belongings on the steps at the entrance of the main house and began distributing tools.

Lin Xiuer distributed the newly bought hoes to the group, picked up a handy one for herself, and walked to the middle of the yard.

"Let's clear this patch of weeds in the front yard first." She pointed to the overgrown grass facing the gate. "Let's clear the path so we can move things in later."

The group nodded, each chose a spot, and began working.

Wu Liangcai gripped his hoe, swung it forcefully at a clump of weeds in front of him, and the hoe sank into the weeds and couldn't be pulled out.

"Hey hey hey—" He pulled hard, his face turning red, but the hoe still didn't budge.

The little follower next to him suppressed a laugh and stepped forward to help him pull, finally managing to pull the hoe out of the grass.

Chen Mingxuan laughed so hard he couldn't stand up straight: "Brother Wu, are you even capable? Are you weeding or hoeing the ground?"

Wu Liangcai's face flushed red, and he stubbornly argued, "This grassroots background is too deep! You try it if you don't believe me!"

Chen Mingxuan took the hoe from him, found a spot that looked easy to use, and swung it hard.

The hoe went in, but he also stumbled forward and almost fell into the grass.

"Ha ha ha ha!"

Wu Liangcai seized his opportunity this time, saying, "You're the one who's talking, aren't you? You can't do it yourself!"

The two young masters mocked each other, but their hands didn't stop, swinging the hoes back and forth. Although their posture wasn't very graceful, they did manage to clear a patch of grass.

Hu Yidao watched from the sidelines with amusement, but his hands moved with surprising efficiency.

He has been slaughtering pigs for many years and has plenty of strength. With one stroke of his hoe, he can turn up the grass and roots, clean and efficient.

"Watch closely, you two," he demonstrated to the two young masters, "this is how you weed: tilt the hoe down, pry it open, and the roots will come out."

Wu Liangcai and Chen Mingxuan went over to watch and carefully imitated his posture. When they tried to do it again, it was indeed much easier.

Lin Xiuer was also engrossed in her work.

She's much stronger now than before; with one stroke of her hoe, the grass roots are turned up and the clods of earth are scattered.

Ping An stood by, silently working.

Although he had never done these things before, he had the advantage of being strong, fast, and efficient.

They advanced row by row, quickly surpassing everyone else by a large margin.

Chen Mingxuan swung his hoe a few times, but after only clearing a small patch, he started panting: "I...I've discovered...this work...is much more tiring than climbing a mountain..."

Hu Yidao laughed heartily, "This is just the beginning, young master!"

The two lackeys were honest and hardworking, keeping their heads down and not uttering a single unnecessary word.

One person was responsible for carrying the hoeed grass to one side and piling it up, while the other was responsible for clearing away the large clods of earth that had been turned up.

It was nearly noon, and the sun was blazing down, making it feel hot. But the ancient trees in the garden cast large patches of shade, and a breeze would occasionally blow through, so it wasn't too unbearable.

"This garden is quite good in this respect." Chen Mingxuan straightened up, wiped his sweat, and looked around. "There are many trees, so it's cool."

Wu Liangcai nodded in agreement: "It will definitely look good once it's finished."

Lin Xiuer didn't reply, but just smiled and continued working with her head down.

She knew in her heart that the purpose of tidying up the garden was not to make it "beautiful", but to make it "functional".

It's habitable, you can grow vegetables, and raise chickens.

Whether it looks good or not is a matter for later.

The weeds in the yard were laid down one by one, revealing the blue brick road and soil underneath.

Insects lurk in the soil. When the hoe is turned over, earthworms wriggle and burrow into the soil, while centipedes scramble around in a panic.
