Wu Liangcai straightened up, looked at the small patch of land he had cleared, and smiled: "I've never done so much work in my life."

Chen Mingxuan nodded in agreement, "Me too."

Hu Yidao laughed heartily: "This is nothing! The garden is huge, enough to keep you busy for half a month. Young men, practice more, you'll get used to it."

Wu Liangcai and Chen Mingxuan exchanged a glance, and their smiles vanished.

The group chatted and laughed, but their hands never stopped working.

Just as they were getting into the swing of things, they heard footsteps coming from the doorway.

"Sister Lin—"

Lin Xiuer looked up and saw Liu Ruyan carrying a basket, walking in with a smile.

Behind him followed Liu Songnian and a middle-aged man carrying a toolbox.

"Miss Ruyan? Mr. Liu?" Lin Xiuer put down her hoe and went to greet them. "What brings you here?"

Liu Ruyan smiled and handed over the basket: "I thought you were working hard, so I brought you some dry food and water."

Lin Xiuer lifted the cloth covering the basket and saw that it contained a dozen or so white steamed buns, a pot of water, and several bowls.

"This..." she said somewhat embarrassedly, "It's too much trouble for you."

Liu Songnian waved his hand: "No trouble at all."

He turned to the side and introduced the middle-aged man behind him, "This is Carpenter Li. He's skilled and honest."

"I figured we could put everything else aside for now, but you need to fix this main gate first and reinstall the lock, so I brought him here. Otherwise, anyone can come in, and it's not safe."

The carpenter, Li, was a man in his forties with calloused hands; he looked like a reliable and hardworking person.

He cupped his hands in greeting to Lin Xiuer, said nothing more, and walked directly toward the gate, beginning to examine the crooked wooden door.

Lin Xiuer looked at Liu Songnian and felt a little touched.

The old man was a kind-hearted person. He said he wouldn't worry about it anymore, but he still cared about them.

"Mr. Liu, you've thought of everything so thoughtfully. Thank you for your trouble," she said sincerely.

Liu Songnian waved his hand, his gaze falling on the dilapidated door.

"It was no trouble at all." After saying that, he walked towards the gate and began to examine the door with Carpenter Li.

Carpenter Li walked to the front door, looked it over, then reached out and pushed the crooked door panel, nodding.

"The frame isn't broken, just the hinges are loose and there are a few nicks in the door panel. It can be repaired and used, or you can replace it with a new one."

Lin Xiuer thought for a moment and said, "If it can be repaired, let's use it for now and get a better door when we have more money later."

Carpenter Li responded, opened his toolbox, and busied himself with the clinking and banging of tools.

Liu Ruyan remained where she was, watching Lin Xiuer and the others covered in sweat, and softly asked, "Sister Lin, is there anything I can do to help?"

Lin Xiuer glanced at her clean and tidy clothes, smiled and shook her head: "No need, bringing water is the biggest favor you can do. Go sit in the shade over there, don't get sunburned."

Liu Ruyan pursed her lips, said nothing more, picked up the basket and walked to the shade of a tree, where she arranged the steamed buns and water.

"Everyone, take a break, have something to eat and some water," Lin Xiuer called out.

Chen Mingxuan and Wu Liangcai were exhausted. When they saw the steamed buns, they were like they had seen a savior. They dropped their hoes and ran to the shade of the trees.

"I'm so tired, I'm so tired..." Chen Mingxuan plopped down on the ground, grabbed a steamed bun, and started eating.

Wu Liangcai wasn't much better off. He ate his steamed bun in large bites and mumbled, "This job... it's inhuman..."

Hu Yidao laughed and scolded, "You've only been working for a short while and you're already complaining about being tired? I slaughter pigs every day and I've never complained about being tired!"

Lin Xiuer also went over and took a steamed bun, broke it in half and handed it to Ping An, then took a bite herself.

Steamed buns are soft and fluffy, and when eaten with cool boiled water, they are more refreshing than any delicacy.

Wu Liangcai took a sip of water and swallowed a steamed bun: "Sister Lin, once this garden is finished, can we still come over for a meal?"

Lin Xiuer smiled: "Sure, as long as you're not afraid of hard work, you're welcome to come anytime."

Chen Mingxuan immediately replied, "Let's do the work, I'm just sitting at home doing nothing anyway."

"I'd be willing too." Wu Liangcai quickly raised his hand. "Sister Lin's cooking is so delicious. As long as she provides the meals, I'd be willing to come and do chores every day."

"Working can help me exercise and lose weight, and I can also chat with you guys to relieve boredom. It's much more interesting than running laps by myself."

Hu Yidao laughed and said, "You two young masters, don't complain about being tired and run away after working for two days."

"Brother Hu, what you're saying!" Wu Liangcai patted his chest. "I always listen to Sister Lin, and I've been going for a run every morning!"

"Although I overslept and didn't get to run today, I just wanted to get some rest so I could get back to work!"

"Me too. After I got home yesterday, I spent a lot of time looking at the account books with my dad."

In order to have a good time going out, Chen Mingxuan has been diligently learning how to read account books from his father every night.

Although he started dozing off after watching very little, at least his attitude was much better than before. As long as he's willing to learn, his dad is still very easy to talk to.

Liu Ruyan sat beside them, listening to their bickering, her lips curving into a smile.

"Okay, then I'll make some pastries for you tomorrow. You've worked so hard, and while I can't help with anything else, I can still make you some food."

Everyone looked at her. Liu Ruyan had a faint smile on her face and a hint of anticipation in her eyes.

"Alright, then I'll have to trouble you, Miss Ruyan."

Upon hearing that there were pastries, Wu Liangcai became even more excited: "Miss Ruyan, what kind of pastries can you make? Can you make osmanthus cake?"

Liu Ruyan quickly nodded: "Yes, yes. I know a little bit about osmanthus cake, mung bean cake, and jujube paste pastry. If I don't know how, I can learn from the master chefs at the teahouse."

"That's great!" Chen Mingxuan chimed in. "I love jujube paste pastries. They're sweet but not cloying, and go perfectly with tea."

Everyone laughed, and the atmosphere under the shade of the tree was relaxed and lively.

Liu Songnian was standing by the gate, discussing with carpenter Li how to repair the door hinges.

He had his back to the courtyard, yet he heard every word of the laughter and chatter, and a smile unconsciously crept onto his face.

The young lady seemed relaxed and happy when she was with them.

He glanced back.

Liu Ruyan sat under the shade of a tree, talking to Lin Xiuer. She had a smile on her face, her eyebrows relaxed, and she was genuinely happy and at ease.

Most importantly, they can now openly enter and leave the old house under the guise of helping others, something they never dared to imagine before.

After we finished eating and rested for a while, the gate was repaired.

Liu Songnian and Liu Ruyan had to go on stage in the afternoon, so they didn't stay long. After saying goodbye, they left with Carpenter Li. They agreed to come back the next day to change the lock, and the money for the lock and the labor would be settled together.

After seeing the person out, Lin Xiuer clapped her hands and said, "Alright, let's get back to work."

The group picked up their hoes again and continued weeding.
