Archer's Adventure Manual
Chapter 38: A Sword Without Thought
Lena led Loran and Brian to the red-haired girl who was training in the training field.
"Let's get acquainted. This is Finita." Lena then pointed to Loran and his companion. "This is Loran and his pet Brian."
The red-haired girl, Finita, seemed a little shy and greeted everyone softly, "Hi, everyone."
"Hello there."
"Woof! Hello!"
Lena explained, "Our training camp is structured by time slots, with me personally guiding each trainee. I prefer to pair trainees up because it allows them to motivate each other."
"And coincidentally, Finita is all alone right now. Would you mind learning from each other?" Lena asked.
"No, I think...it's fine," Finita said softly.
Lorraine affirmed, "I have no problem."
"Well, Finita mainly wants to master magic, while Loran, you want to enhance your combat skills and learn fighting techniques. But you both have one thing in common that you need to learn, and that is mental strength."
"Whether it's unleashing combat techniques or magic, it all depends on the support of your mental strength."
"Why do you often see veteran adventurers who, despite not having systematically studied knowledge, are still able to unleash powerful combat techniques?"
After Lena finished speaking, an exquisite longbow wrapped in vines appeared in her hand. Then, instead of drawing an arrow, she conjured an arrow that shimmered with blue light out of thin air—an arrow made of magic!
She aimed at a scarecrow standing in front of her, and suddenly shot an arrow, hitting the scarecrow's head precisely.
Finita stared blankly at the scene. This arrow not only contained the skill of combat, but also magic. For Finita, who wanted to master magic, this was simply too cool!
Seeing this scene reminded Loran of Elfin, the ranger who led the villagers to kill the mountain boar with his superb archery and magic.
Lena then explained:
"A battle-hardened archer has unparalleled confidence in every arrow he fires. In that moment of focused shooting, their mental strength is materialized, and the certainty of hitting the target becomes, under the influence of the world's rules, an absolute certainty of hitting the target. This is combat skill."
"Without sufficient confidence and focused spirit, one cannot change the rules of the world, nor become the one who uses the rules; one can only become the one bound by the rules. This is the meaning of combat skills."
"The same applies to archery, and also to magic. However, magic requires understanding basic knowledge and actively changing the rules of the world using mental power, which greatly increases the difficulty."
"This is something you should all know."
Loran listened to Lena's explanation, seemingly understanding but not quite.
In fact, he had also experienced the state that Lena described. When releasing skills, his attention would be forced to concentrate, which would also consume his mental energy and make him feel a little tired.
The power the adventure manual gave him was to first release the result, and then let him experience the process, which was completely different from what Lena said about the result being caused by the process.
He really needs to examine himself in the future and see if he should continue to rely on this reverse process.
After pondering for a moment, Loran asked, "Instructor Lena, releasing combat techniques inevitably consumes mental energy. How can I reduce this mental energy depletion?"
Lena glanced at Loran with surprise and praised, "I'm glad you brought up this question. It's quite crucial in unleashing combat skills. Many newly promoted bronze-level adventurers rely on their ability to unleash combat skills and use them frequently."
"However, because they did not handle it carefully, they became fatigued after using the combat skills a few times and could no longer use them, which could put the entire team in a dangerous situation."
"Mental energy depletion cannot be artificially reduced, but we can reduce mental energy depletion by controlling our energy."
Lena raised her longbow again, and a beam of light appeared, aiming at the scarecrow in front of her. "Imagine what I would think if I wanted to use combat techniques to shoot it?"
Finita hesitated for a moment, then asked uncertainly, "Will I be thinking... whether this arrow will kill the enemy ahead?"
"Should we use combat techniques to conserve energy?" Loran also wondered.
Brian, who was sitting attentively listening to the lesson, barked, "I'd want to stick arrows into a goblin's butt!"
Lena chuckled and shook her head, then suddenly fired an arrow with pinpoint accuracy, striking the scarecrow's head once more.
But that wasn't all. Lena drew her bowstring in quick succession, firing three arrows in the blink of an eye, all of which struck the same spot on the scarecrow's head.
"The answer is, don't think about anything," Lena said with a faint smile. "Control our energy and do something useful. The things you're thinking about are completely useless for me to shoot the target in front of me."
"The moment you want to unleash your combat skill, you enter a state of focus. In this state of focus, every second consumes a lot of energy. What you need to do is release your combat skill quickly, instead of thinking about other factors."
"Clean and efficient. Now that you have the idea to unleash a combat technique, the next moment is to let your body's instincts release that skill."
Looking at the group of people listening attentively, Lena thought for a moment and then said, "Let me tell you about someone you all know well, the once famous Napoleon the Great, whose battle technique was called 'The Sword of No Thought'."
"Only Napoleon the Great could achieve the sword strike without any thought. He could even release his combat technique without generating any thoughts, allowing all his concentrated mental energy to be poured into the strike itself."
"While we may not be able to reach that level, having a clear mind and acting decisively is more than enough. Therefore, what I am saying today can benefit you for a lifetime, so please remember it well."
Finita nodded earnestly, "I'll remember that, Instructor!"
"Thank you for your guidance; I have benefited greatly from it."
"Woof!"
"Okay, next is the practical part. Understanding the principles isn't difficult; the challenge lies in how to implement them. We can achieve that through repeated practice."
Next came Lena's instruction session, which lasted for over an hour.
Under Lena's guidance, Loran used his mastered skills to accurately shoot at the scarecrow in front of him.
Precision shooting is a continuous skill. During this time, each shot will consume a reasonable amount of mental energy, not much, and is acceptable.
But as Lena said, the random, rambling thoughts that Loran generated would lead to unnecessary mental energy depletion during this period.
For Loran, who once lived in the information explosion era, it was completely impossible for his mind not to wander!
This causes Loran's mental energy to deplete quickly, requiring him to rest periodically. Some of his overdrawn mental energy even requires deep sleep to replenish.
Fortunately, he received guidance from Lena with each shot, and Loran's precision shooting skills improved rapidly without killing any creatures, which was more effective than killing so many rabbits!
It had already leveled up to level 2 halfway through.
精準射击lv.2(熟练度1/50):40秒内20米距离箭无虚发。
Loran sat on the ground, panting heavily. She was exhausted, but it was all worth it.
His eyes seemed to burn with the flame of hope as he looked up at the azure sky.
He can't defeat that monster right now, but what if he has enough time? His sword might not be at a disadvantage then!
