Chapter 049: Ideas about Recurve Bows
Loran fell into thought. Even without considering the issue of embedding beast cores, the composite bow was still a rare and valuable item!
It can save energy and improve accuracy. There may be a difference in power, but the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
The most difficult part of achieving this goal is that he himself must first build a composite bow.
His impression of compound bows was only superficial; they had scopes and seemingly pulley systems for saving effort... How could such functions be achieved?
He thought of the simple device used for the town's wells, which would save a lot of energy by using pulleys to lift the buckets.
"Mrs. Juno, do you think that if I added two rotating wheels to both ends of the bow, like the wheels on a well, it would help save the effort required to draw the bow?"
"Loran suddenly asked."
Juno paused slightly as she listened to Loran's description. She didn't immediately dismiss Loran's idea, but instead began to think about it seriously.
"Your idea sounds good, but the reason a bow is so powerful is because of its explosive force. That's why we choose resilient materials that can withstand that force."
"However, you've attached two wheels to both ends of the bow. The powerful force will cause the wheels to fall apart, preventing you from achieving the effect you envisioned."
Juno offered a reasonable explanation that refuted Lorraine's idea.
Lorraine frowned. Clearly, Juno's explanation was entirely correct; the wheel lacked resilience and couldn't withstand the force...
The composite bow, a product of the collective wisdom of many people on Earth, is clearly not something that an ordinary person like Loran, who is unaware of its principles, could easily replicate.
He silently made a mental note of the idea, hoping to realize it in the future if possible.
But does he have no other choice besides the composite bow?
Suddenly, Loran thought of a piece of equipment that seemed familiar to him. It was a component of Blade of the Ruined King—the Recurve Bow—that he often built when playing the computer game League of Legends as Master Yi.
Recurve bow?
Loran recalled the icon of that equipment: Recurve Bow. As the name suggests, the bow had two curved, reversed protrusions at both ends.
Loran thought this solution was very feasible. It didn't require any special materials or strong logic; it was simply a matter of changing the materials, making it highly practical.
With great excitement, Loran finally selected the materials.
The bow body is made of ash wood core, and wild boar sinew is used as the bowstring.
"Do you know where this wild boar tendon came from?"
Loran was puzzled. "Were they hunted by other adventurers?"
Juno shook her head and said with a wicked smile, "I bought it from the Adventurers' Guild. It was the tendon of that mutant mountain boar. It cost me quite a bit of money. This tendon should sell for at least 25 silver coins."
Loran's heart skipped a beat, and his expression immediately stiffened.
"The tendons of the mutant mountain boar can sell for 25 silver coins?! And that's just the tendons! That boar has so many other useful parts left! How much money did the Adventurers' Guild rip off them?!" Loran thought to himself.
I knew there were middlemen making a profit, but I never imagined it would be this big!
Seeing Lorraine's somewhat shocked expression, Juno put on a troubled look and said, "It's not that I want to cheat you, but I can't make it any cheaper. You'll be using the bowstring for a long time, so investing in it is very worthwhile."
In the end, Loran compromised, spending a total of 35 silver coins.
As the saying goes, "A skilled craftsman must first have the right tools," so Loran made a huge investment!
"The materials are just the basics; there will be additional processing fees later. Little guy, do you have enough money?" Juno reminded him.
Loran sighed, forcing a smile. "That should... be enough!"
How many rabbits would you have to kill to accumulate 3500 copper coins!
"Oh, Mrs. Juno, I also need to buy some materials for making light nails."
"uh-huh."
......
With a total cost of 80 silver coins, high-quality animal hides, and high-quality bone fragments, the materials for making boots, leather and bone armor, cloaks, hoods, and gloves were all prepared. The next step was to go to Old Smith's blacksmith shop for processing and production.
At this moment, Old Smith's blacksmith shop was making a constant clanging and banging noise.
"Hello, Mr. Smith, I would like to ask you to make a set of equipment for me," Loran said politely as he approached the blacksmith's shop.
Old Smith glanced at Loran, raised an eyebrow, and said, "You... I think I remember you. Aren't you the young man Thompson brought before? What's your relationship with that old guy?"
"Oh, that old guy, he cheated me out of a lot of money. To be honest, I really want to smash him to the ground with a hammer!" Loran showed a resentful expression and quickly cut ties with Thompson.
Old Smith felt a deep connection to what Lorraine said, as if he had found a kindred spirit.
"Yeah, that old bastard is a real scoundrel! He's always swindling and cheating people, even trying to cheat an honest guy like me. Last time he went even further, he just stole all my equipment! What kind of nonsense is that!"
"Yeah, if we get the chance, let's go to his place and give him a piece of our minds!"
Old Smith sighed, then shook his head. "Forget it, I won't go. In the end, he's quite pitiful. He's already short, and he's made his face look so ugly. I can't bear to argue with him anymore."
"By the way, kid, you came to me to make equipment, right? What kind of equipment do you want? I have plenty of ready-made ones here."
Loran took out the materials he had bought from his backpack and handed them to Old Smith, saying, "Mr. Smith, I brought the materials myself, and now I would like to trouble you to process them for me."
"Little Beard, come and help me with this forging. I'm here to take a look at this customer's equipment design," Old Smith called out. His dwarf assistant quickly came out of the blacksmith's shop and accepted Old Smith's work.
"Let's go inside and talk," old Smith invited.
Loran sat down at the stone table, unfolded the materials one by one, and explained the equipment he wanted to make.
Old Smith nodded to each of them, indicating that there was no problem.
Following that, Loran inquired about Old Smith's experience in crafting bows, to which Old Smith calmly answered.
Then, Loran slowly put forward another idea.
"Mr. Smith, I've been thinking... Look at those branches bent under the weight of snow and then springing back, or those resilient saplings bent by strong winds. Don't they accumulate even more force after bending to a certain extent, making their rebound particularly powerful?"
"I was thinking, if the two ends of a bow weren't bent along the curve of the bow's back, but instead deliberately curved forward like that, would it be like bending a tree branch before releasing it, resulting in a more powerful shot?"
Old Smith raised an eyebrow.
