Archer's Adventure Manual

Chapter 065: The Archer's Pain

"Good news?" Loran was somewhat puzzled. What good news could he possibly get from Smith?

Old Smith explained, "Lorran, didn't you ask me to design a brand new bow called the 'Recurve Bow'? And then I still have the original prototype in my blacksmith shop, which was accidentally seen by a nobleman from Warren."

"The nobleman tried it out and found that the experimental bow was much better and more practical than the ordinary straight bow. So he wanted me to make a bow like that for him to use in the archery competition held by the Warren nobles."

"As you know, nobles are often very wealthy, and I received a great fortune because of this! But I know that the reason I received this fortune was not because of myself, but because of you, Loran, who came up with this idea."

Lorraine was somewhat taken aback, then looked at Old Smith earnestly and said, "Mr. Smith, this is a good thing. You've helped me realize my idea, and now I can use your technology to earn extra money. Actually, I don't care about these things."

"No, no, no. Without your idea, even with my superb skills, I couldn't have created this type of bow. I believe your idea is just as important as my skill!"

"So, I think you deserve credit for securing this valuable order, and I've decided to share half of the profits with you!" Old Smith looked at Loran earnestly.

Lorraine was somewhat flattered, but ultimately accepted Old Smith's offer.

Well, although he really didn't want to accept such a windfall, he couldn't resist Old Smith's kindness—it was a token of his appreciation! So, he could only reluctantly accept it.

"After I submit the order, I will share the money I earn with you. It may take about a week. Remember to come to my blacksmith shop to pick it up then."

"Thank you very much, Mr. Smith. Actually, I came here for another reason. I just had an adventure, and I would like you to check the condition of the arrows for me."

Loran went into the blacksmith's shop and laid out all the arrows from his quiver, arranging them in a row.

"Mr. Smith, many of these arrows were salvaged from goblin corpses. Could you take a look and see if they're still usable?"

Old Smith first roughly examined the arrows, then narrowed his eyes and began to pick through them, eventually picking up several arrows one by one.

"Loran, look at these arrows. The arrowhead and the shaft are essentially two different objects, held together by an adhesive."

"But these arrows don't look damaged on the surface. If you look closely, there are some traces of dirt and some moisture at the joint between the arrowhead and the shaft."

"Several arrows were clearly inserted into damp soil. Impurities in the soil would get into the gaps in the adhesive, affecting its effectiveness, and the moisture would exacerbate this effect."

"If an arrow is shot at this moment, the arrowhead may separate from the shaft during its flight. Of course, I'm saying there's a chance."

"But if one or two arrows go wrong in a crucial battle, it could put the entire team in danger. You should pay attention to that."

Loran listened carefully. He took the arrow from Old Smith's hand, and as he had said, the junction of the arrowhead and shaft did indeed penetrate quite a bit of damp soil.

Furthermore, the degree of penetration is quite significant, and even if a high-strength adhesive is used, the risk of separation still exists!

Old Smith continued to examine the arrows on the table and began to pick and choose them again.

"Come on, what's wrong with these arrows?" Old Smith gestured to the arrows in his hand.

Loran examined them closely and found that the arrows seemed to be unharmed. He asked suspiciously, "They look almost brand new."

Old Smith grinned slyly and shook his head, saying, "This is something that's easily overlooked in battle; I call it deceptive vision."

"If you observe normally, you won't notice the problem with these arrows, but if you bend the shaft slightly with your fingers..."

Loran watched as old Smith began to bend the shaft of an arrow with his fingers. As the arrow shaft was bent, fine cracks appeared. When it returned to its normal shape, these cracks fit together perfectly with the shaft.

"I see." Loran nodded in realization.

Old Smith nodded in satisfaction. "So you must pay attention to this issue when retrieving arrows. If some arrow shafts have hidden cracks, they may break when you draw your bow, which will not only hurt you but also affect your output efficiency."

"And this one, some of the fletching has fallen off, which will affect its flight trajectory; the arrowhead is slightly deformed, affecting its power..."

Fortunately, most of them are fine, and those with minor issues can be maintained in a low-cost way without spending too much money.

Loran then explained his other purpose for coming: he wanted to bring more arrows.

Now that we understand the fragility of arrows, we need even more spare arrows. Otherwise, as an ADC, if you can't use basic attacks, how can you fight in team battles?

Old Smith pondered the question carefully, glancing at the quiver slung over Loran's back, which already contained many arrows...

"Loran, if you carry more arrows, you'll probably feel the burden. You know, a big part of a ranger's advantage is their agility. If you carry too many arrows, it might affect your speed."

Old Smith explained.

As Loran listened to Smith's analysis, he sighed deeply. He hadn't quite understood the archers' weaknesses before, but now that the problems were presented to him in a concrete way, he finally understood.

Warriors can continuously wield their iron swords to inflict damage, and when their strength is depleted, they can recover in the wild; mages can use themselves as a medium to cast powerful spells, and when their energy is depleted, they can simply take a nap.

But what about the archers? If they run out of arrows, in this desolate wilderness, they'll probably have to make their own. With limited resources, they can only manage to craft stone or wooden arrows at best...

They even carry a quiver of arrows when they go out to intentionally reduce their movement speed...

Loran was so angry he laughed. He could understand why Elfin had become so powerful after mastering magic.

Once an archer no longer needs to use physical arrows, their sustained damage output and burst damage are no worse than any other class.

Once an archer no longer needs to worry about the weight of arrows, his mobility can rival that of an assassin.

Archers can even save money since they don't need to worry about attrition!

"It seems that magic is still necessary..." Loran muttered to himself. If he mastered magic and archery, it wouldn't be as simple as 1+1=2; they would create many more interconnected reactions!
