adventurers in the sewers

Chapter 4 Sewer Monsters, Flesh and Blood Slimes!

After the notification sound ended, a virtual arrow appeared in Louis's eyes, with the straight-line distance between him and the target marked below the arrow, which was exactly one kilometer.

Louis nodded to himself. If nothing unexpected happened, the maximum distance that the Golden Finger could detect high-value targets was one kilometer.

However, the sewers were too winding, and the distance to actually find the target was well over a kilometer.

Following the arrows, Louis wandered through the maze-like sewers for a long time. When he was only a hundred meters away from his target, he slowed down and cautiously observed his surroundings.

After walking a few more steps and rounding a corner, a strong, pungent stench assaulted Louis's nose.

He subconsciously held his breath, frowned, and looked ahead, his eyes gradually widening.

At the end of the road, there was a dark red, translucent wall of flesh. The wall seemed to be alive, slowly crawling forward and devouring everything in its path.

Louis could clearly see that inside the wall of flesh were the corpses of gray rotting rats, their skeletons completely dissolved, their flesh and blood shattered, and complete eyeballs squeezed out of the eye sockets of some unknown creature.

The stench, as if from a hundred rotting corpses piled together and left to bake in the scorching sun for three days, was undoubtedly emanating from this monster.

The utterly degrading scene before him deeply impacted Louis's heart.

Could such a monster be hiding in the sewers of Blackrock City?

Louis swallowed hard and, very "from the heart," chose to retreat.

In the last second before retreating, he clearly saw the target detected by the Golden Finger.

It was a male corpse encased in a wall of flesh, wearing light metal armor.

He had likely been dead for no more than twenty-four hours. His skin had been completely corroded, and the flesh exposed outside his armor revealed a layer of bright red muscle. Even from his skinless face, one could still see the suffocation and despair he had shown before his death.

Louis retreated quickly, his mind racing with thoughts.

"The light armor on that corpse looks really high-end. Could it be that the person was a seasoned adventurer in life?"

"Even experts like these die in the sewers; this damn world is simply not suitable for ordinary people to live in!"

As for why he was able to escape while the expert died?

Those who drown are usually good swimmers. Louis guessed that the other party had probably underestimated the monster's strength and realized that it was too late to escape when they realized they couldn't defeat it.

Thinking about all this, Louis couldn't help but feel a chill of fear.

Adventurers are indeed a high-risk profession with no advantages; even if you have cheat codes, you can't just recklessly go about your business.

Perhaps only by becoming an extraordinary professional can one possess a certain degree of self-protection ability.

After keeping a safe distance from the monster, Louis was already having second thoughts and wanted to go back and rest for a day before coming back tomorrow.

But considering that he had only marked two corpses so far and could only receive a bounty of six copper coins, not even earning back the cost of registering as an adventurer, he could only grit his teeth and persevere.

You won't know your potential until you push yourself.

Over the next few hours, he systematically checked the surrounding pipes and drains one by one, just like playing an open-world game, lighting up the nearby map one by one.

His efforts paid off, and he found three more corpses blocking the drain. Two of them were too decomposed to be of any value, while the other gave Louis a +1 farming skill point.

Louis, who had been busy all morning until nearly evening, felt extremely hungry, so he found a manhole cover nearby and climbed onto it.

The clothes, soaked in sewage from fighting the gray rats, had dried by now, but the stench still made pedestrians on the street avoid them like the plague.

Louis was a man who cared about his reputation, so he hurried home to change his clothes before going to collect the commission.

"Brother, your clothes..."

When Louis entered the house, Méli, who was the first to greet him, was taken aback when he saw his condition.

Louis lied without even blushing:

"On my way back, I accidentally fell into a sewer. I don't know which damn guy stole the manhole cover. Luckily, I only got my clothes dirty and wasn't hurt."

Little Merry breathed a sigh of relief, patted her chest, and said:

"It's good that you're not injured."

As he spoke, the little guy stepped forward and began to pull off Louis's clothes:

"Brother, quickly take off your dirty clothes. I'll go heat up some water for you to take a bath, and then we can use the bathwater to wash your clothes."

Louis scratched his head awkwardly, but did not refuse.

When it comes to housework, he, having lived two lives, is no match for Merry, so he'd better not cause any more trouble.

Wearing only his underwear, he waited in the house for a while until Merry boiled the water.

For the poor, hot water is a luxury. It's impossible to take a bath in a tub like in movies and TV shows. It's already quite good if they can get a basin of hot water to wipe their body, wash the sensitive areas, and then rinse with clean water.

Fortunately, the original owner's family hadn't been poor for long, and a small piece of soap remained, which was enough to clean it.

After taking a shower and changing his clothes, Louis felt as refreshed as if he were wearing new underwear on New Year's morning.

The little one poured bathwater into the basin containing the dirty clothes and carefully rubbed them little by little with the help of soap bubbles.

After washing for a while, Merry asked in a low voice:

"Brother, how did the interview go?"

Louis smiled and said:

"I passed the interview. If all goes well, I should receive my first paycheck next week."

These words were, of course, a lie, but Louis was confident that he would be able to return home with a generous "salary" a week later.

If you've already used cheat codes, and you still can't support your family, then what's the point of using cheat codes?

Merry's silver-grey eyes lit up, her expression brightened instantly, and she nodded happily.

Louis patted his younger brother's head and said:

"Oh right, I forgot my coat at work. I'll go back and get it."

After saying that, Louis turned and went out the door, heading towards the Adventurers' Guild.

……

"Dear adventurer, this is the commission fee. Please keep it safe. Relevant personnel will go to the location marked on the map to verify it later."

The receptionist pushed out a small stack of copper coins.

Louis carefully counted the fifteen copper coins and tucked them into his pocket with great care.

Just as he was about to leave, he remembered the wall of flesh, glanced at the adventurers coming and going in the guild, and said:

"I have information about a powerful monster. Can I get a bounty for providing this information?"

The red-haired receptionist replied with a smile:

"Of course. The guild will award a reward to the provider based on the importance of the intelligence. Would you like me to take you to the reception room for a more detailed discussion?"

Louis was delighted, nodded, and walked into a small reception room.

He first described the shape of the fleshy wall, and then said that he saw the corpse of what appeared to be a veteran adventurer inside it.

The receptionist lowered her head to think for a few seconds before giving her answer:

"Thank you for the information. The monster you witnessed was most likely a flesh slime formed by fusing a large number of rotting corpses. Some powerful individuals could even reach the extraordinary level."

"We will have professionals assess the importance of this information. If we can contact the family of the deceased veteran adventurer, we believe you will receive a generous reward."

Louis nodded, got up and left.

In the intelligence provided to the guild, he did not mark the exact location of the flesh slime, that is, the flesh wall.

His idea was simple: once an adventurer took on the task of hunting down the Flesh Slime, he could lead the way.

After successfully defeating the enemy, you can casually touch the corpse to collect its attribute points.

Louis only hoped that the guild could act quickly and that the corpse could hold on for a little longer, so that it wouldn't be digested by the flesh slime too soon.

Whether we can quickly accumulate initial capital depends on this wave.
