adventurers in the sewers
Chapter 5 The Down-on-Handed Heiress of the Chamber of Commerce
After retrieving his deposited coat, Louis returned home.
The guild wasn't close to Louis's house, and it was already dark when we got home.
Standing at the door, Louis saw the dim light reflected in the window, and a small figure moving around busily in the small room, with the faint aroma of bread and meat wafting out.
It's time for dinner.
Wait, bread and meat?
Louis paused, somewhat surprised.
Pushing open the door, one could see that in the small rented room, Melly was standing by the small stove cooking stew. The oil on the soup proved that it was a soup with meat.
Two pieces of black bread were still on the stove, being warmed by the residual heat of the fire.
Regardless of the taste, the aroma alone was far superior to all the food Louis had eaten the previous week.
It's a holiday!
"Brother, you're back."
Merry stepped forward and took Louis's coat, explaining somewhat apologetically:
"After finding out my brother found a job, I wanted to celebrate, so I bought some meat and some better quality bread... Is that alright?"
Louis gently stroked his younger brother's soft, silver hair:
"Of course! Once I make money, I'll eat meat every day, at every meal."
The little guy squinted his eyes happily and tried his best to burrow his head into Louis's hand.
After having a proper meal in a long time, Louis took his brother to a nearby well to fetch water, and then there was nothing else to do.
He missed his cell phone and computer from his previous life, but after transmigrating, he couldn't even find a book in his house, so he had to go to bed early.
The original family lived in a fairly nice house, but after their parents passed away unexpectedly, the two brothers moved into this small room with only one bed, and they had to squeeze together to sleep at night.
Under the damp, cold, and heavy bedding, the little guy clung tightly to Louis, drawing warmth from the latter's body, and slept soundly.
Louis also discovered that as his strength, endurance and other attributes improved, his overall physical fitness also improved, and the previously unbearable damp and cold environment was no longer a problem.
In the pitch-black night, Louis slowly closed his eyes, feeling an unprecedented sense of peace.
The next day, Louis got up very early.
Merry got up earlier than him, prepared breakfast in advance, and boiled hot water for him to drink.
In this world, ordinary people only eat two meals a day, and in order to survive until evening, breakfast is quite substantial—except for Louis's breakfast, of course.
Louis said nothing about the little guy's "differential treatment".
He is not a pretentious person and does not like to decline.
Only when you're well-fed can you have the energy to earn money. When you no longer have to worry about food, Merry will naturally be able to eat her fill every day.
"Brother, be careful on the road. I'll lock the door when I'm home alone."
Merry saw Louis to the door and said with great reluctance.
Louis waved to the little guy, left the alley, and headed towards the guild.
He had already accepted the commission, and in theory he could go straight to work in the sewers, but in order to prevent Merry from finding out that his brother had become an adventurer, Louis had left his dagger, map, and other items with the guild and had to go retrieve them first.
He also needed to check if the commission to hunt down the flesh slimes had been posted.
Upon arriving at the guild's reception window, the red-haired receptionist smiled and said:
"Mr. Louis, welcome."
"I reported the information you provided last night. The commission to hunt down the sewer flesh slimes has been officially issued. However, it's a pity that no family members of the victims have contacted the guild yet, so the reward may not be very high."
"If possible, please provide more details about the intelligence, such as the location of the target."
Louis thought for a moment and replied:
"I come to the guild every morning and evening. If someone takes on a commission, I can act as a guide."
The receptionist seemed puzzled, as if she didn't understand why Louis would go to such lengths.
She thought for a moment and then reminded her:
"Mr. Louis, since there is no client for this commission, all commission proceeds, including the core of the Flesh Slime and the equipment on the deceased, belong to the guild and adventurers are not allowed to take them privately."
"I know, I just want to witness the battle of the strong."
Louis made up a reason on the spot.
To be honest, Louis didn't care about bonuses and commission rewards at all. It would be great if he had them, but if he didn't, he would just curse the guild for being greedy.
As long as it doesn't interfere with his looting of the corpse, anything is negotiable.
Louis's reasoning was quite convincing, and the receptionist nodded in understanding.
He left his coat at the gate, picked up his dagger and map, and prepared to head to the sewers to continue his struggle, while also confirming the location of the flesh slime once more.
He had looked into it; this thing was very slow, left a lot of slime along its path, and had a cheat-like notification sound with a maximum interval of one kilometer, so he couldn't lose it.
But just as he was walking towards the door, a clear female voice called out to him.
"Louis? You must be Louis."
Louis, who had inherited the original owner's memories, vaguely felt that the voice was somewhat familiar.
He turned around and saw a short-haired girl with blue hair, wearing leather armor and carrying a long sword, walking towards him.
The blue-haired girl had very fair skin and delicate features, with a pair of bright emerald green eyes, making her stand out among the group of adventurers with rough skin and large joints.
Louis quickly realized the girl's identity: she was the daughter of the president of the Hughes Merchant Guild, Dena Hughes.
President Hughes was the original owner's and his parents' employer, and he also died at the hands of the monsters that attacked the caravan, which was the main reason for the collapse of the caravan.
Louis learned from the original owner's memories that this Miss Dina had loved swords and spears since she was a child. After the changes in her family, it seemed that her choice to become an adventurer was both unexpected and reasonable.
However, even a starved camel is still bigger than a horse.
Judging from Dina's equipment, she's a real adventurer; he's just a nobody without even a decent weapon.
"Miss Daina, is there anything I can help you with?"
Louis asked.
Seemingly sensing the distance in Louis's tone, Dana pursed her lips, a look of guilt appearing on her pretty face, and whispered:
"Louis, I'm so sorry... After my father passed away, my family's property was mortgaged and sold off by creditors to compensate for the loss of goods. We simply can't afford the compensation, and my mother is also..."
The girl paused, then didn't continue.
She lowered her head, took out a shrunken money pouch from the inside of her leather armor, opened it, and poured out a gleaming, exquisitely crafted silver coin.
After hesitating for a moment, she poured out another coin, placed both silver coins into Louis's hand, and said apologetically:
"I only have three silver coins and a dozen copper coins left on me. That's all I can give you. Take it to tide you over."
"My teammates and I just accepted a commission to help a village outside the city fight monsters. Once I earn the money, I will definitely pay back your parents' pension with interest."
According to the kingdom's exchange rate, one silver coin is roughly equivalent to one hundred copper coins, and even if there are occasional fluctuations, they will not be too significant.
On average, a dockworker's monthly income would not exceed six hundred copper coins.
Louis glanced at the two silver coins the girl handed him, then at her embarrassed expression, and couldn't help but shake his head inwardly.
What an innocent and naive young girl! How did she end up on the path of adventure, a path of no return?
Although Daina has practiced martial arts since she was a child, it seems that she is still a long way from becoming a professional. Will she really follow in the footsteps of those predecessors who made their homes in the sewers?
Seeing that Louis hesitated to take the money, Dina directly stuffed the silver coins into Louis's hand and said sincerely:
"Don't worry, Louis, this task is not difficult, I will definitely complete it."
"I've practiced swordsmanship since I was a child, and I'm very skilled. Most adventurers can't beat me. I might even become a professional warrior in the future."
"If nothing unexpected happens, I should be back in about three days. Please look forward to it."
Louis: "..."
If nothing unexpected happens, there's a high probability that something unexpected is going to happen.
