Chapter 23 Encounter with the Dog's Head, Rams' Past
Oris, hearing the strange cry, showed little reaction, while Rams beside him responded loudly, repeating the same strange sound Oris found odd. Soon, the sounds in the jungle grew louder, and after a rustling sound, numerous savages revealed themselves. Most had been hidden on the ground, covered in leaves, with a few high in the trees; Oris estimated there were several hundred of them.
As the hundreds of savages approached, the soldiers around Oris gripped their weapons tightly, while Oris quickly asked Rams, "Who are these people? What were you saying?" Rams replied, "They are from my tribe. We speak an ancient language. They are verifying my identity." Oris was slightly relieved but still ordered his soldiers to remain vigilant. The savages stopped advancing when they reached within fifty meters of Oris in the jungle. Seeing this, Rams emerged from his ranks and walked towards the savage tribe.
The savages from those tribes whispered amongst themselves after seeing Rams's appearance, as if confirming his identity. After a while, seeing that the other side showed no sign of backing down, Oris ordered the soldiers around him to put on his armor while shouting loudly at them, "What does Rams on the other side mean? If they're not going to fight, make them lay down their weapons."
After Auris finally donned his armor and mounted Durotan, the enemy's young men gradually laid down their weapons. Seeing this, Auris rode Durotan out of the enemy ranks. An old man from the opposing side walked shakily to Auris, bowed, and said, "Lord Auris, I am the priest of this tribe. Thank you for coming to our island." Upon hearing this, Auris looked at the old man with slight surprise and said, "You speak Common Tongue?"
"I went to the North with the tribe when I was young, so I can talk about it." After listening to the old man's explanation, Oris was still very puzzled. According to the books Oris had read before, Skane Island should have been uninhabited after being plundered by the Skags Island rock race for many years. Oris and his companions had come to this uninhabited island in order to obtain fresh water. Oris thought so, so he asked the question.
After Oris finished speaking, the old man still answered tremblingly, "Many years ago, the original inhabitants of the island were indeed eaten by the Rock Seeds. We later escaped here by small boat from beyond the Great Wall. Our tribe was defeated in the battle beyond the Great Wall, and the remaining people did not want to be sold into slavery, so they all came here."
After hearing the old man's answer, Oris asked again, "Then you haven't encountered the Rock Species again?" The old man replied, "About five or six years ago, we encountered them frequently. The Rock Species used this place as a hunting ground, and large numbers of them would often come here to hunt. But later, for some reason, they stopped coming back. Our tribe is small, and most of them have gone into hiding, so we are able to survive here."
After roughly understanding the situation, Oris ordered his soldiers to lay down their weapons, but not remove their armor. He then rode Durotan towards the savage camp. Upon seeing Ramsay again, Oris frowned and slapped him across the face. Some of the surrounding savages glared angrily, while others lowered their heads in silence. Oris then asked Ramsay, "What did you say to these people?" Ramsay didn't deny it, replying directly, "I only mentioned your name and that I wanted to obtain some supplies. I didn't say anything else." Upon hearing this, Oris's furrowed brow relaxed, and he said, "From now on, without my permission, not a single piece of information can be divulged. Do you understand?"
After Oris finished speaking, he looked at Rams, who replied loudly, "Understood."
After hearing Rams's answer, Oris spoke with the old man for a while longer. During this time, he learned that the tribe was called Dog Head, and the old man was named Towind. Led by Towind, Oris and his companions arrived at the Dog Head's settlement, a cave high in the mountains. The cave was only wide enough for two people to pass side-by-side at first. After a while, the cave widened, with light shining through an opening in the ceiling. The cave was winding and contained several pools of water. After obtaining enough fresh water, Oris and his companions traded their weapons and iron pots with the tribespeople for meat and animal hides. They then set up camp outside the cave to rest.
Outside the cave, Oris gazed at the bright moon in the sky, his thoughts in turmoil. This was already his seventeenth year since he transmigrated. In these years, apart from managing the manor and struggling to survive, there had been almost nothing interesting. Although this trip was somewhat dangerous, Oris treated it as a kind of spice in his life. With that thought, Oris set up a campfire, placed a whole wild goat on it, and called two white eagles and four dire wolves. Durotan lay down behind Oris, providing support for his back.
After the mutton was roasted, Oris called Rams over and asked him to fetch mead. Then, he distributed the meat to the animals and ate with Rams. During the meal, Oris asked, "Were you originally from this tribe?" Rams nodded silently. Oris didn't find it impolite and asked again, "Then how did you end up on Uncle Namir's ship?" Perhaps aided by the alcohol, the twelve-year-old Rams recounted his entire story.
This is how Oris learned that Rams had lived in the Dog-Headed Tribe until he was seven years old. One day, while gathering with his mother, they were discovered by the Rocklings hunting on the island. The Rocklings captured them, raped and then ate his mother. Rams was then trained as a slave, with the plan to sell him once the slave city-state's ship arrived. However, before the slave city-state's fleet arrived, the Northern army attacked, conquering the Rocklings under the red flag of the Skinners, intending to use them as cannon fodder. Rams seized the opportunity to jump into the sea and, during a moment of laxity, stole a small boat and escaped to Skane Island. However, he collapsed on the island's shore before even reaching it and was rescued by Uncle Namir.
After hearing Ramsay's story, Oris remained silent. He felt some sympathy, but not much. In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, who truly controls their own destiny? Everything is merely a matter of going with the flow. Even Robert died an unclear death in the end. The only thing one can truly rely on is the power in one's own hands. Thinking of this, Oris asked, "Are you going to stay here?"
Rams shook his head without hesitation, replying, "This place is too small. I don't want to spend my whole life hiding in jungles and caves." Hearing Rams's answer, Oris smiled—a genuine smile. Because Oris saw ambition in Rams's eyes, an ambition to climb ever higher.
