Chapter 16 Immortality
There wasn't much of that dark green liquid; it was collected after filling three sealed containers.
That afternoon, he was sent to an underground biological research laboratory directly under the Pentagon.
When the protective personnel entered the laboratory with the sealed container, it immediately attracted the attention of several researchers nearby.
"New sample? What type?"
"Unknown biological tissue fluid, source confidential, highest priority."
The escorts put down the jar and turned to leave, but this attitude did not displease the researchers, whose attention had already been drawn to the jar!
The combination of "unknown biological tissue fluid" and "highest priority" is enough to excite them!
The sealed container was placed on the isolated operating table.
The liquid is a dark green color, with a texture between blood plasma and gel. Under cold light, its surface occasionally shows a very faint phosphorescence.
"It has a bioluminescence reaction?" A middle-aged researcher leaned closer to observe. "This stuff... does look a lot like blood to the naked eye."
"Don't guess, take a sample."
The oldest person in the lab was Herman Weber, who was sixty-seven years old and had been doing biological research for forty-three years.
"First, extract a small sample and run the standard procedure."
Everything proceeded smoothly and according to plan.
Under a high-powered microscope, the microstructure of the liquid gradually becomes clear.
The middle-aged researcher stared at the screen for three seconds, rubbed his eyes, and then observed it carefully again.
"Dr. Weber, please come and take a look."
Hermann put down his recording tablet, walked to the microscope, and bent down to attach the eyepiece.
The cellular structures in the image did not match any of the known species he was familiar with; the thickness of the cell wall, the number of cell nuclei, the distribution of mitochondria... everything was unfamiliar.
But these are not the main points.
The key point is... these cells are dividing, and not just any ordinary division!
Herman zoomed in to the maximum, and the cells in the image were replicating themselves at an insane rate. Moreover, the telomeres of the new cells produced after each division showed no signs of wear!
He desperately suppressed the shock in his heart and observed carefully, becoming more and more alarmed the more he observed!
This cell can hardly be described as...
Perfect cells!
"How can such a thing exist in the world?!"
"Doctor? What's wrong?"
Hermann didn't answer, but instead said, trembling, "Report this immediately, to the highest level!"
......
In an office overlooking the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Wilson sat in a large leather office chair, covered with a thick cashmere blanket.
"Cough cough cough..."
The office was quieted by a violent cough; Wilson's face turned red from coughing.
It took him a long time to calm down.
In the late stage of lung cancer, cancer cells have begun to spread extensively.
Even though he has access to the country's top medical resources, and even though he receives exorbitantly priced targeted therapies every day, he knows that his time is running out.
The red secure telephone on the table suddenly vibrated.
Wilson took a deep breath and pressed the answer button.
"Sir, Professor Hermann has made a major discovery and requests to report to you in person immediately."
Five minutes later, Herman strode into Wilson's office, his eyes gleaming with an almost manic excitement.
"Your Excellency Minister!" Hermann rushed to the desk and slammed a thick paper report on it.
Wilson was somewhat surprised by the other man's excited expression; he had never seen this stubborn old man show such an expression before.
Hermann leaned forward, his hands gripping the table. "We've investigated. What was sent was blood! Blood of some unknown creature! Your Excellency, you have no idea what we found in that blood!"
Before Wilson could reply, Herman eagerly interjected, "Immortality! We've discovered immortality!"
Upon hearing this, Wilson's previously cloudy gaze instantly sharpened.
Hermann swallowed hard, then excitedly gesticulated wildly: "This isn't some kind of theoretical immortality achieved through various methods, like the immortal jellyfish or hydra!"
"This species achieves immortality through sheer numerical superiority! It doesn't age, it doesn't get sick! This means that as long as this organism isn't physically destroyed, it can live forever!"
After he finished speaking, the office fell into a long, deathly silence.
Only Wilson's heavy breathing echoed in the air.
He knew better than anyone what Herman meant by "unknown creatures".
Deep Diver!
In other words, the Deep Ones not only possess intelligence comparable to humans and the extraordinary ability to destroy armies, but they are also an immortal species.
Upon reaching this conclusion, Wilson felt a sense of absurdity and almost laughed out of anger.
"Your Excellency, I need to know what the prototype of this blood is! Just give me a live sample, even a severed limb! I guarantee I can give you a satisfactory answer!" Hermann's eyes gleamed with a fervent thirst for knowledge.
Wilson looked at the old man in front of him, who was obsessed with science, and his eyes gradually turned cold.
Live sample?
Are you kidding me!
Those ghostly things took the corpses with them when they left, why would they want living ones?
He slowly leaned back in his chair, pulled the report in front of him, and said in a calm and authoritative tone, "Hermann, the source of the prototype involves top secret, and it is not the right time to disclose it to you now."
Hermann froze, his fanaticism vanishing: "But..."
Wilson raised a hand to interrupt him, then took out a checkbook, quickly wrote down a string of numbers, tore off a checkbook, and handed it to Herman. "This is my personal research funding for you. I don't care how you spend it. In return, if you make any new discoveries, I hope you'll let me know first. What do you think?"
Herman looked at the string of zeros on the check, wanting to say something, but seeing Wilson's expression, he immediately calmed down. He knew there was no other choice.
"I understand, Your Excellency Minister." Hermann pocketed the check, turned, and left the office.
The door was closed.
Wilson was left alone in the office once again.
He sat quietly in his chair, his gaze fixed on the report on the table.
Immortal species.
There's no need to worry about the pain and suffering.
Wilson looked down at his hands, which were as dry and bark-like as tree bark, and felt the tearing pain in his lungs with each breath.
if......
A crazy idea took root uncontrollably in his mind.
What if I could become a Deep Diver?
Does that mean we don't need to die?
Could it be that by doing so, one can completely shed this decaying body, gain extraordinary power, or even... immortality?
He abruptly pulled up his computer and brought up a top-secret analysis report on the origins of the Deep Ones.
The prevailing intelligence theory regarding the emergence of the Deep Ones is that the group of homeless veterans in Columbia District underwent a transformation under the influence of some unknown factor.
Wilson looked at the report, his brain starting to work furiously. He wanted to find similarities among those people, just in case he also met the criteria.
First, there are veterans.
He also served in the military and participated in the Gulf War; he is also a veteran.
The conditions are met.
What else is he lacking?
Family betrayal, drug addiction, debt, homelessness.
"..."
......
An old, dilapidated rental house.
Douglas lay on the bed, holding the small medicine bottle in his hand.
This afternoon, the authorities sent several more groups of people with various testing equipment, and they turned the area he was in charge of upside down, all in search of this thing.
From that moment on, he knew he had made the right choice!
Great stuff, absolutely great stuff!
But he can't keep it for too long; he has to sell it quickly!
So, is there anything you buy, use, and then never buy again, and will never go back to the seller?
Douglas quickly pictured a robust figure.
So he contacted a friend in the bodybuilding community.
