Chapter 68 Shout!
Max's cigarette burned out, and after hearing Vito's words, his fingertips trembled as he barely managed to pull himself out of Sammy's tragic past, his eyes surging with anger and disbelief.
"There's a traitor among them! What's wrong with the Snake Clan?! They actually colluded with the Night Wanderers to harm their own people!"
He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white, and his whole body radiated a suppressed ferocity. The usually kind tribal chief was now driven to ruthlessness by the complete betrayal.
Wanderers of the wilderness band together for survival from birth; betraying their tribe is an unforgivable sin.
Vito stubbed out his cigarette, flicking the butt into a tiny spark on the metal floor of the transport truck.
Anger solves nothing.
Max took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing his surging emotions, and looked up at Vito.
"Do you have a solution?"
"There is one."
Vito revealed the plan he had already devised.
"Tomorrow morning, under the pretext of dispersing supplies and avoiding risks, you will divide all the delivery and escort personnel in the camp into five teams, each heading to a different supply point in the wasteland to transport supplies. The final destination of all five teams is that abandoned mine transfer station deep in the badlands."
Max raised an eyebrow, instantly understanding the underlying meaning.
"You and I will lead the combat personnel near their final transit point, without leaving any trace."
The five teams take different routes and depart at staggered times. Only the mole will pass on the message to the Night Wanderer in advance and lie in ambush at the destination or along the way.
Whichever squad is ambushed, there's a traitor within that squad.
He paused, then added.
"The entire operation is kept secret. No one but you and me knows the real arrangements. This way, we can at least check the transport personnel first."
"Do as you say! I'll arrange for people to split it up right now, and absolutely no word will leak out!"
That night, the camp remained shrouded in silence. No one knew that a hunt targeting the mole had been quietly set up.
Carlo stayed with Sami, who had calmed down, in the tent to rest. The little girl's eyes were empty, filled with self-blame.
Jack, meanwhile, went early to count his weapons and check his equipment, eager to deal with the Night Wanderer.
The next day, just as dawn was breaking and the sandstorm was still howling in the Badlands, Max gathered all the escort and delivery personnel and, according to plan, divided them into five small teams.
Afterwards, he issued different supply point missions, only adding that different teams should not communicate during the mission, his tone was normal, and he did not show any abnormality.
Without a doubt, the team members quickly organized the supplies and inspected the trucks. The five teams drove out of the Snakebang camp one after another, heading in different directions.
Time passed slowly, and the first five teams drove smoothly towards the abandoned mine transfer station without encountering any obstacles.
Max stared at the locator in his hand, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper.
Finally, as the last squad drove into the canyon area surrounding the mine's transit station, a frantic cry for help suddenly came through the radio, accompanied by a barrage of gunfire and the roar of explosions!
"There's an ambush! It's the Night Wanderers' convoy! They've been waiting here for a while!"
"The enemy's firepower is too intense; we can't hold them off!"
Vito's eyes sharpened, and he gave the order in a cold and decisive voice.
"Max, you and Carol lead your men to flank the caravan from the left side of the canyon, Jack and I will launch a frontal assault. Annihilate the Night Wanderer convoy, don't let a single one escape!"
The magician accelerated instantly, the engine roaring as it broke through the sandstorm and sped toward the ambush site.
Meanwhile, inside the canyon, Night Wanderer's modified vehicles had completely surrounded Snake Gang's convoy of trucks. Gunmen were firing machine guns wildly, and the wanderer members on the trucks were retreating step by step.
Just then, Vito's off-road vehicle charged into the battlefield first, and the Sany heavy machine gun instantly spat fire, accurately sweeping the Night Wanderer's gunmen. Max's elite troops also flanked from the side, forming an encirclement.
The Night Wanderers never expected the Snake Gang to provide support so quickly, and they were thrown into chaos. They had come to intercept supplies after receiving a tip from an insider, but they hadn't expected to fall into Vito's trap.
The battle lasted no more than twenty minutes. The Night Wanderer's ambush convoy was completely destroyed, all the ambushers were wiped out, and the corpses lay scattered in the sandstorm, while the wreckage of the vehicles emitted black smoke.
The wandering members of the delivery truck convoy were still in shock, staring in astonishment at Vito and Max who had suddenly appeared.
Max stood at the front of the convoy, his face ashen, his gaze sweeping over the team members before him.
"All five teams were headed here, but only your team was ambushed. The mole is among you."
One sentence caused the delivery team members present to change their expressions drastically. They looked at each other, their eyes filled with shock and suspicion.
Vito stepped forward slowly, without uttering any unnecessary words.
"Separate them all, interrogate them one by one, confiscate all their communications and personal devices, and I will read the data."
Jack and Carol quickly separated the team members and took them to different carriages for individual interrogation. However, after questioning several people, they all denied everything, became agitated, and did not reveal any clues.
Vito sat to the side, reading the data from the confiscated personal terminals and communicators one by one, and looking through recent communication records and location information.
Vito noticed one of the members, Toby, who was usually responsible for checking the escort routes. He seemed quiet and unremarkable.
Vito discovered that the terminal contained frequent encrypted data upload records, and all of these uploads occurred before each escort or delivery operation.
More importantly, his self-examination results contained glimpses of drug metabolism data and records of frequent drug intake.
Vito, holding the tablet, walked up to Toby, who was being held in solitary confinement, and threw the tablet in front of him.
Toby's face turned deathly pale instantly, his whole body trembled uncontrollably, he clenched his fists instinctively, and his eyes were filled with panic.
"Toby, you've been caught. You've been consuming glitter every day. You might end up only being able to become a night owl from now on."
Toby shuddered, unable to hold on any longer, and slumped into the chair, clutching his head with both hands, letting out a desperate sob.
This former planter and wanderer could not possibly hide his betrayal.
"It was me...it was me who did it..."
His voice was hoarse as he confessed everything: he used to drive long distances for security escorts, and to combat his exhaustion, he started using sedatives, eventually becoming addicted and unable to break free.
Later, he was discovered by the Night Wanderers, who used him to blackmail him, demanding that he either provide information about the Snake Clan's escorts and camps, or they would tell Max about his drug use and expel him from the tribe.
Torn between the torment of drug addiction and the rules of the tribe, Toby, with nowhere else to turn, ultimately chose betrayal.
Even the recent theft of weapons and attack on the camp were made possible by his supplementary defensive information after Sami revealed the location, which allowed the Night Wanderer's raid to be incredibly accurate.
When the truth came out, Max was so angry that he trembled. Looking at the tribesman he had once trusted, his eyes were filled with disappointment.
