Conan: What alias? That's my struggle!

14: Mingmei's Misunderstanding

Outside the car window.

The sound of sirens grew louder as they approached.

Lin Ye closed her eyes.

I silently cursed this world for the hundredth time in my heart.

Wherever you go, you die. Is this broken world's social law tied to the existence of Elementary School Grim Reaper? The problem is, Shinichi Kudo isn't here either!

"What bad luck!"

He sighed. Oh well, it's none of his business anyway. He's just a top-notch enforcer who helps people visit relatives; let the police worry about murder cases.

Her task was to deliver Akemi Miyano to Shiho Miyano.

Then they take the money and call it a day, that's all.

"Let's leave."

Lin Ye's plan was good; however, just as he put his hand on the steering wheel, he heard a knocking sound outside the car window.

"Knock knock knock".

A uniformed patrolman stood next to the driver's seat, bent over, and looked at the two people through the car window.

His expression wasn't stern.

But there was a sense of routine scrutiny in his eyes.

"Sir, excuse me for interrupting. There's been a case up ahead, and we can't leave this area for the time being. Did you just come from the coffee shop?"

Lin Ye took his hands off the steering wheel and rolled down the car window.

"Yes," he said, choosing not to lie, since there was no point in lying at this time. "We sat inside for about half an hour."

Upon hearing this, the patrol officer took out a small notebook.

"Please cooperate and do a simple registration. The coffee shop staff also said that you were in the store before and need to stay to make a statement."

It turns out he was bluffing Lin Ye and the other person.

Even police officers without detectives present are full of tricks.

"Do we need to take a statement?"

Akemi Miyano sat in the passenger seat, her fingers unconsciously tightening around the seatbelt. Neither she nor Lin Ye were particularly fast, so it was normal to be caught off guard in this situation.

Lin Ye glanced at Miyano Akemi.

The woman's expression was calm, but her knuckles were already white. The habitual vigilance of an organization member was operating instinctively within her—if the police were encountered, remain calm and avoid attracting attention. This training was etched into her bones, but not into her heart.

Her heart was racing.

Lin Ye could hear it.

"relax."

He spoke in a voice only the two of them could hear, "It's just a normal question. Aren't you a member of the organization? Acting shouldn't be difficult, right?"

Akemi Miyano glanced at him, her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but in the end she just nodded slightly.

She took a deep breath and slowly loosened her grip on the seatbelt.

The two got out of the car and followed the patrol officer into the coffee shop.

The atmosphere in the café was completely different from half an hour ago. The sunlight was still the same sunlight, and the blinds were still the same blinds, but there was something indescribable in the air—tension, fear, curiosity, and a mixture of emotions that made the whole space feel like a pot of soup about to boil.

At this moment, a makeshift cordon was set up at the entrance to the restroom, and several police officers were busy inside. The other guests were evacuated to a few tables by the window, each with a different expression. Some were talking quietly, some were looking down at their phones, and some were holding a glass of water with pale faces and slightly trembling fingers.

"They're all from around Mihua. People die every single day of the year, and these people are still making a fuss about it." Lin Ye curled his lip.

He and Akemi Miyano were seated at a table against the wall.

A young police officer walked over, holding a notebook, and asked them for their names, addresses, contact information, and why they were there today.

"A date," Lin Ye said, her tone as natural as if she were commenting on the nice weather.

Akemi Miyano nodded in agreement, even managing a slightly embarrassed smile.

This was, of course, an act, and her performance was spot on—she lowered her head slightly, her cheeks flushed, like an ordinary girl feeling shy when asked about her private life.

Lin Ye mentally gave her a high score.

As expected of an outer member of the organization, his on-the-spot reaction was indeed quick. Just then, a familiar voice came from the coffee shop entrance as the young officer was taking notes.

"What's the situation at the scene?"

Lin Ye's ears perked up.

That voice—deep, steady, and with a seasoned experience that had seen it all.

He knows him.

And indeed, Inspector Megure strode in, wearing his signature beige trench coat. Two detectives from the First Investigation Division followed behind him.

One was holding a camera, and the other was carrying a toolbox.

"Inspector Megure." The young officer approached and reported, "The deceased is a man in his forties. The preliminary cause of death is cyanide poisoning. The body was found in a men's restroom stall, and the time of death is estimated to be between twenty and thirty minutes."

This statement did not surprise Lin Ye at all.

After all, it is common knowledge that cyanide is readily available throughout Japan; otherwise, most of the deaths in over a thousand episodes of Detective Conan would not have been caused by cyanide.

It's reasonable to follow the "Ke Xue" (科学) theory.

"Cyanide, I see." Inspector Megure nodded, his gaze sweeping around the coffee shop before settling on Lin Ye.

"Dr. Hashimoto?" Inspector Megure raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise in his voice. "What a coincidence, what are you doing here?"

He clearly felt that Lin Ye shouldn't be here.

Lin Ye stood up and gave a slight bow politely: "Inspector Megure, we meet again."

Inspector Megure walked over, his gaze shifting from Lin Ye to Miyano Akemi, and then back to Lin Ye.

His gaze became subtle, and the corners of his mouth turned up slightly, giving off an "I understand" expression.

"Dr. Hashimoto".

Inspector Megure lowered his voice, speaking in a volume only the two of them could hear, "You just came from a murder scene yesterday, and today... you're out on a date with a new girlfriend?"

He didn't understand, but he was deeply shocked.

Lin Ye opened his mouth, wanting to explain.

But Inspector Megure continued talking to himself.

"But it's good, after going through something like that, you really need to relax. Dr. Hashimoto, you really know how to take care of yourself." As he said this, he had a knowing, knowing smile typical of middle-aged men. People who didn't know his innocent persona might have thought he was one of those people.

All I can say is that veteran police officers understand human relationships and social dynamics.

Lin Ye fell silent.

Forget it, it's impossible to explain now.

Akemi Miyano overheard the entire conversation, but her expression remained unchanged, still displaying the shy demeanor of someone mistaken for her girlfriend.

But Lin Ye noticed that the corner of her eye twitched slightly.

Madeira seems to have a rather unrestrained private life? They're all adults, so of course Miyano Akemi can understand the so-called tacit understanding between Inspector Megure and Hayashi.

This inevitably made Akemi Miyano think more.

If Madeira is a lecher... then could there be some kind of relationship between my sister and Madeira that makes him willing to offend Gin to help my sister?
