Chapter 3 Setting Sail
Office of the Principal of the G City Branch of Starry Sky University.
The middle-aged man, who looked to be only in his forties or fifties, held a cup of traditional coffee in both hands. After a moment of silence, he slowly spoke: "Ling Hao, you are an outstanding student at Starry Sky University. The school has wronged you by making you participate in such a dangerous experiment..."
Ling Hao merely watched the middle-aged man's explanation with cold eyes, remaining unmoved no matter what the other party said.
"Sigh, you still can't forgive me, or your alma mater?" The middle-aged man sighed and shook his head.
"You need to understand, the school didn't do that experiment on purpose, and didn't you already know there would be side effects before the experiment even started?"
Ling Hao sneered upon hearing this, saying, "The little side effect you're talking about is making me lose my psychic potential? Thanks to you, I've become the first student in the history of Starry Sky University to be directly assigned to Mars, a disgrace to the school."
As he spoke, Ling Hao stood up from his chair, took a deep breath, and concealed the resentment in his heart.
"If you've come to me seeking the last bit of solace, then I can only say you've come to the wrong person. I will never forgive you."
"Moreover, I will definitely come out of Mars and let you open your eyes and see that I, Ling Hao, am not the kind of person who will fall to the bottom just because I lose my spiritual potential." At this moment, the eye-shaped mark on the back of Ling Hao's hand kept shining brightly, as dazzling as the starry sky.
However, no one could see this brilliance; even Ling Hao himself could only vaguely sense it.
The middle-aged man did not expect Ling Hao to speak so decisively. Their meeting and talks ended unhappily. However, in the end, the middle-aged man still did not use his status to pressure Ling Hao.
Because all of this is meaningless now. In the next two days, Ling Hao will be heading to Mars, where he will be forever lost, stripped of all his glory, and reduced to just another ordinary person.
"May you achieve great things on Mars."
Ling Hao left amidst a blessing delivered in a completely emotionless voice. He boarded his last hovercar at Starry Sky University, gazing at the massive and magnificent school gate, his eyes revealing a hint of stubbornness and resentment.
"Starry Sky University, I'll be back sooner or later!"
After leaving school, Ling Hao had to prepare the things he would take to Mars.
The Martian environment is harsh and chaotic, with a survival-of-the-fittest mentality and numerous gangs and various forces.
It is said that even the current King of Mars is a bloodthirsty figure who came from a gang. He once had a dispute with the Earth's high-ranking officials, claiming that he would invade Earth and slaughter the entire family of those officials. In the end, he was blocked.
"On Mars, psionicists still reign supreme, followed by evolved humans, and finally cyborgs."
"My psionic potential is ruined, but I still retain some physical attributes. I have considerable potential to become either an evolved human or a cyborg."
"However... I'd better become an evolved being."
The thought of replacing his entire body with various bionic prosthetics sent a chill down Ling Hao's spine. It was said that cyborgs not only had expensive prosthetic bodies, but also suffered from hacking, viruses, and other problems.
Ling Hao shook his head, banishing these thoughts from his mind, and immediately went to make the final preparations for his trip to Mars.
Exchange for physical currency.
The Federation of Humans uses two types of currency: a virtual currency called Credits and a physical currency called Inar, which is made of nanosilk.
As we all know, a credit system's currency needs something as a price anchor. The inar is essentially a sophisticated form of barter, also tied to 600 kilowatts of electricity, while credit points are tied to one million inars.
Credits are a secondary currency recognized by the Starsea Community and can be exchanged for the main interstellar currencies. No civilization's own tertiary currency is recognized, which means that the actual value of credits far exceeds their market value.
Through the glasses-like personal terminal, Ling Hao checked the numbers in his account.
The 0.00835 credits consist of numerous prizes from various knowledge competitions Ling Hao has participated in over the years. Fortunately, he didn't rush to have his gene module transplanted before.
Mars is one of the more special planets in the Federation. Not only does it not circulate credits, but it is also subject to a great deal of control. Members of Mars are not allowed to leave Mars at will; otherwise, they will be considered to have violated federal law and will be punished.
Similarly, advanced products from outside the world have difficulty entering Mars, while some old or even worthless items on Earth can often fetch high prices on Mars.
"Unfortunately, I can't exploit such a loophole. I don't even own a spaceship. When I ride a public spaceship, I have to undergo a full-body scan, and I can't bring any contraband with me. There's simply no opportunity to make money."
After exchanging all his credits for Inar and buying some things online, Ling Hao followed the notification and headed to the spaceship bound for Mars.
The spaceship was enormous, measuring over 1,300 meters long and 400 meters wide. Its exterior was coated with a special silver paint, making it look like a large barracuda.
"Dear guest, the spaceship will depart for Mars in twelve minutes. The estimated travel time is fifteen minutes. Please remain seated during the journey to avoid any accidents..." the AI's gentle voice announced.
The seats inside the spaceship are very close together, making it difficult for ordinary people to stretch their legs, and many passengers are already sitting in those seats.
The vast majority of these passengers, like Ling Hao, had no expression. Some even showed fear and discomfort, as if going to Mars was like going to hell.
However, this analogy is not wrong. For residents like them who grew up on Earth, going to Mars is tantamount to going to hell.
Outdated technology, chaotic order, poor public facilities... everything made people feel as if they had fallen from heaven to hell, losing the affluent life where they didn't have to worry about food and clothing.
Sitting on the cold iron chair in the spaceship, Ling Hao closed his eyes and began to contemplate his life.
At that moment, the eye-shaped mark on his hand seemed to come alive, revealing a mocking expression to the surroundings. At the same time, a faint prayer gradually rose, captivating all who heard it.
"...At that time, the Lord of Sorrow bestowed blessings and delivered salvation to all who believed..."
----------
In an instant, the G City Virtual Realm Countermeasures Department sounded a scarlet alarm once again, and the three giants, Hai, Shan, and Qiong, held another virtual space meeting.
"What happened? Where did this fluctuation in the illusory realm occur?"
"We must find the source of the fluctuation!"
"It looks like... a spaceship route to Mars!"
----------
At this moment, the spaceship had already departed, and in just a few seconds, everyone on board had already left Earth by hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
"Welcome...to...Mars..."
The chaotic artificial intelligence uttered whispers that no one could hear, feeling sorrow for these wanderers in deep space who had no idea where they were going.
