Chapter 4 A Fated Encounter

"We have arrived at our destination. Please collect your luggage and proceed in an orderly manner..."

Fifteen minutes passed in the blink of an eye, and Ling Hao arrived at one of the many starport halls on Mars, following the instructions of the artificial intelligence.

The entire venue was deathly silent, save for the sounds of AI voices, mechanical operation, breathing, and heartbeats.

No one caused trouble; those who were extremely resistant had already chosen suicide. In other words, everyone who came here still held onto hope for tomorrow, however faint it may be.

After everyone on the spaceship stepped into the hall, a blue light swept over them, and a few people were marked by a purple beam of light after being swept over, including Ling Hao.

"Scanning people is one thing, but why are they also detecting psionic potential? And is this thing so outdated? They're including me too." Ling Hao looked at himself marked by the purple beam of light and was immediately confused.

With the development of technology, such scanning and detection are now common in places with a large number of people. In addition to counting the number of people, it can also confirm who has arrived, who has not arrived, and who has sneaked in. If there are criminals, they can be detained directly.

In the Human Federation's scanners, this purple beam of light is used to determine whether someone possesses psionic potential, but an airport has absolutely no need to perform such a test.

"Those with psychic potential, please follow the instructions to enter the designated room. Those without psychic potential may leave." A male voice rang out in the hall, and the walls changed to display instructions.

Ling Hao pushed up his glasses, dragged his suitcase, and walked towards the designated room. Everything was in good order. After entering the interstellar era, in addition to becoming physically stronger, there were also fewer people with low moral character like those in the national era.

"Hello, is this yours?" Just as Ling Hao was about to follow the signs and leave the hall, a male voice sounded behind him. Turning around, he saw a young man who looked to be no more than twenty years old calling him.

The young man had striking features, including sharp eyebrows, bright eyes, and short, black hair. He wore a white T-shirt under a black coat and black jeans. When Ling Hao saw what the young man was holding, his eyes widened in surprise.

"How did this jade pendant get here?!"

The young man was holding the very jade pendant that Ling Hao had entrusted to the ritual of the Lord of Mourning!

Ling Hao took a deep breath, accepted the jade pendant from the young man's hand, and said, "Thank you. This jade pendant has special meaning for me."

"It's nothing, just a small favor." The young man shook his head, then walked past Ling Hao and entered the corridor.

"Is he also a potential psychic?" Turning his head to look at the young man's receding figure, Ling Hao's eye-shaped mark on the back of his hand, which was holding the jade pendant, emitted a strange, but unnoticed, light once again.

Suddenly, as if sensing something, Ling Hao looked to the other side of the hall. Logically, with such a dense crowd, he shouldn't be able to see anything, but his gaze bypassed the others and landed in the distance.

A group of people walked in from the other side? Strange…

Ling Hao put the jade pendant in his pocket, took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. He found that his vision had returned to normal, but he remembered the strange situation that had just occurred.

After walking down the corridor to the designated room, a man in an official uniform stood on a stage, while rows of chairs were set up below, occupied by other people with psychic potential.

"Welcome to Mars, everyone." After everyone entered, the man on the stage spoke, and waved his hand towards the wall behind him, revealing a screen.

"Whether you know anything about Mars beforehand or not, we will give you a brief introduction for the sake of our mission."

Mars, the cold, terrestrial planet made of oxidized rock, was humanity's first colony. Nearly two hundred years have passed since then, and its surface is no longer covered with orange-red impact craters, but rather with various terrains and structures reminiscent of its home planet.

Mars has ten major metropolitan areas, half of which are official and half are private. In addition to surface cities, each metropolitan area also includes sky cities and underground cities.

Those without psychic potential are sent to underground cities. If their assets reach millions, they can go to surface cities. To enter sky cities, one needs an invitation and assets of one billion.

Lucky individuals like Ling Hao, possessing psychic potential, were able to live in surface cities from the start, and had more options than ordinary people.

They can choose to join the Martian government, which will give them the opportunity to leave when they become first-tier psionicists, or they can choose to work on their own on Mars. However, if they do not join the government, they may not be able to leave even if they become second-tier psionicists.

The man scanned them and said, "Now, those who wish to join the official force, please enter the passage on the right. Those who want to make their own way, please stay here. We will escort you to the nearest metropolitan area."

The reason for the escort is that before becoming a semi-exile planet, Mars' environment was terraformed to resemble Earth's, making it suitable for human habitation, so it didn't necessarily have to enter urban areas.

Although the territory of the Human Federation is not small, its population is relatively small, so both psionicists and those with psionic potential are quite precious.

Upon hearing the man's words, most of the people chose to join the official group, leaving only about ten people behind, including Ling Hao and the young man from before.

"Select destination: San Diego Empire metropolitan area. Depart." The man gave the order to the AI after seeing that the rest of the people were still sitting in their chairs.

Then, the surrounding walls changed, the doors closed automatically, revealing windows, forming the shape of a train, heading towards the distant San Diego Imperial City-state.

A few minutes later, the train stopped, and Ling Hao and the others got off the train one after another. However, they did not enter the metropolitan area, but stayed on the outskirts of the metropolitan area.

No one else thought much of it; the short kilometer distance would be covered in no time.

The train returned immediately after dropping them off, leaving only Ling Hao and the young man they had met earlier behind.

Ling Hao stood there, recalling the scene he had just witnessed, a sense of foreboding rising within him, though he couldn't quite put his finger on what was amiss: 'What were those people doing, scanning heads before entering the hall?'

"Huh? It's raining?" The young man next to him looked up and found that the sky, which had just been clear, was suddenly covered with dark clouds, and there was even a faint sound of thunder.

Upon hearing this, Ling Hao, recalling what had just happened, suddenly realized something and cursed angrily, "Damn it! This is the Outer Realm of Heartscape! That bastard betrayed us!"

Those with psychic potential are precious and must be protected.

But it is precisely because those with psychic potential are so precious that they are so valuable!

In the distance, a psionicist with a bead floating in the air, palm facing up, strode towards the crowd, as if shrinking the distance to an inch, covering more than ten meters in a single step!
