126. Tina
"Where did this castle come from in the dungeon? Could it have been built by monsters?" Shared's words struck everyone as utterly absurd.
In many people's minds, a dungeon is a wild and untamed place teeming with monsters, where there's not even a single brick, let alone a castle.
Shared pushed up his glasses and said, "That's one of the reasons I came here."
"Last time I came here, I spent too much time in other parts of the ninth floor. By the time I discovered the castle, I had just found a way to open the castle gates when my supplies ran out, forcing me to turn back."
"But this time is different. We've made ample preparations beforehand; our backpacks are full, we've brought plenty of medicine, and our target is that castle. We're sure to make some incredible discovery!"
Charles's voice grew louder and louder, and the light in his eyes grew brighter and brighter, just like the excitement of a child about to receive a gift.
"Let's go! Let's keep going!" The group continued forward at Shared's urging.
Based on his previous experience in the Rotten River dungeon, Norn discovered that the deeper one goes, the fewer threatening monsters there are.
Along their journey, they encountered mostly small creatures that were not a threat to humans.
But the real monsters are all huge and ferocious, and their combat power is extremely high. It is as if the combat power of each monster is concentrated in a single individual.
When faced with unfamiliar monsters, Shared always adhered to the principle of not fighting. He would avoid them if possible, and if there was no other way, he would devise a detailed strategy and the whole team would work together to overcome them.
Although this method is slow, it is definitely safe, and no one on the team has been injured along the way.
Unbeknownst to them, the sparse trees around them became denser, the barren grassland was replaced by lush woodland, and the vegetation on the ground changed from dry yellowish-brown to deep dark green.
The tall trees blocked out the sun, their canopies overlapping and intertwining, completely obscuring the gray sky, with only a few faint rays of light occasionally leaking through the gaps.
"Almost there, almost there!" Shared said, pointing to a mark on a tree, his voice brimming with barely concealed excitement. "This is the mark I made last time!"
He quickened his pace, and the group followed suit, almost jogging through the last patch of woods.
As the last few large trees disappeared from view, a wide canyon appeared before everyone.
The canyon is flanked by towering cliffs, the gray-black rock walls straight and steep as if cleaved by a sharp axe, stretching all the way to the hazy horizon.
In the center of the canyon, atop a solitary peak rising abruptly, stands a castle.
The black castle.
It appears to have grown out of the mountainside, constructed entirely of some kind of dark black stone, gleaming with a cold luster under the hazy skylight.
The city walls are towering, with neat crenellations and a bastion at each of the four corners. The tops of the bastions still have broken crenellations, casting long, thin shadows in the wind.
"My God..." No one could believe their eyes.
Many of them thought that the castle Sharred described was just a mountain peak full of holes formed by weathering, but now it seems that it was not a metaphor at all.
The castle was built to an extremely high standard, maintaining symmetrical beauty from any angle. The windows, in particular, were neatly arranged with uniform spacing. No matter how ingenious nature is, it could not achieve such exquisite detail.
Charles took off his glasses, wiped the lenses with the silk he carried with him, and put them back on, but his vision was still blurry. Finally, he realized that he was crying.
He wiped away his tears and said to everyone with deep affection:
"Did you know that I've explored the Sky Dome Underground City, reaching as deep as the tenth floor? I've also been to the Decaying River Underground City, but I stopped at the seventh floor because of the Howling Sea. But neither Sky Dome nor Decaying River has such a man-made structure!"
He opened his arms as if to embrace the entire castle.
"My dream of so many days is about to come to an end!"
After speaking, the group walked onto the stone bridge connecting the two ends of the canyon.
The stone bridge is much wider than it appears from a distance, enough to allow four people to walk side by side. The railings on both sides are about waist-high and are carved from a single long strip of stone, with some indistinct patterns engraved on the surface.
Charles walked along, stopping frequently, constantly taking notes on the patterns on the railings in his notebook.
Uru didn't understand his behavior at all, thinking that there was nothing to remember about these messy patterns, and that it would be better to bring a few monsters for him to kill to his heart's content.
Soon, the group crossed the stone bridge and arrived at the square in front of the fortress walls.
In the very center of the square, something caught everyone's attention.
At first, Norn thought it was a stone, but when he got closer, he realized it was a person.
It knelt on the ground, its hands supporting its body in front of it, its forehead pressed against the stone slab, and it remained completely still.
Just then, a loud bang came from inside the city wall, startling Koroya so much that he quickly drew his sword.
The central gate of the city wall was slowly pushed open, and two skeletal giants wearing decaying armor pushed the gate out and stood on either side of it.
Before Norn and the others could figure out what was going on, the person kneeling on the ground stood up shakily, and Sharred quickly ran over to help him up.
"Hehe, you've had a tough time. How long have you been kneeling here?"
"About a day." The man stood up, his voice ethereal like a mountain stream.
Norn finally saw her face clearly.
She was an elf with long, dark purple hair that cascaded over her shoulders and skin so white it seemed to glow. Her most striking feature was her face, which was so exquisitely beautiful that even Norn wouldn't dare to Photoshop it like that.
Her name is Tina, the diamond-level adventurer that Sharred sent down in advance, and also a member of Sharred's last expedition team. As for why he did this, Sharred explained.
He pointed to a stone tablet standing in the center of the square and asked Norn and the others if they could understand it.
The team members went closer and saw a line of messy writing carved on the stone tablet, so they all shook their heads.
Shared laughed, saying in a way that was both an explanation and a boast, "This is ancient Roman script! It was discovered by a tribe in the Antagya Desert. It's extremely obscure; not even most scholars have heard of it, let alone you! If it weren't for me..."
"So what does it mean?" Uru asked, oblivious to the origins of these obscure words.
Shared rolled his eyes at him and said, "'Those who come to pay their respects!'"
"I knelt for two whole days to open this city gate! This time, to save time, I let Tina come down first."
"Hmph, why open the door? Why not just smash it open?" Uru said nonchalantly.
"These walls and the castle are built with magic rock. You think you can break through them?" Shared retorted dismissively.
Uru knew that the Demon Rock was the boundary surrounding the underground city, and even the Emperor couldn't break through it, so he stopped talking.
