29. Corpses at Sea
Sizzle~
After listening to the sound of the waves for a long time, the sizzling sound of the barbecue sounded especially pleasant.
The monstrous octopus raised one of its large tentacles above its head, with countless hairy tentacles hanging down like tassels.
Big Bear raised his hands high and, as if picking grapes, plucked off the tentacles, tore them off, and threw them onto Little Bear's belly to roast.
The tentacles twisted and shrank into balls under high temperatures, turning into bite-sized snacks.
Thanks to these tentacles, Norn experienced what it felt like to be stuffed for the first time in this body.
After filling his stomach, Norn had Xiong Da tighten the tentacles that secured his body, and then wandered around aimlessly among the monstrous octopus covered in human faces.
The sea was much larger than he had imagined; in every direction he looked, there was only a gloomy sky and a black horizon.
Without direction or any reference points, Norn wouldn't have been able to tell if he was moving at all, had it not been for the ripples created by the monstrous octopus beneath his feet.
When he reached the mouth containing the mud-eating beasts, they were all dead. The monsters, who had lived in the swamp for a long time, were ultimately not adapted to the sea environment.
Norn had his tentacles scoop the mud-eating beasts' corpses out of their vomit and throw them to the bears, Big Bear and Little Bear, to enjoy.
Compared to cooked food, they clearly preferred to eat raw. The two brothers tore the mud-eating beast apart without any processing, and after eating it clean, they didn't waste the remains, throwing them all into the sea to feed the giant octopus.
After the two bears had eaten their fill, they hid in the meat pit and fell fast asleep. Norn also felt a little tired; staring at the monotonous sea surface for too long would always make a person's mind wander.
But he couldn't sleep. The sea was so vast; if he missed an island, he would have to spend a lot of time searching for it again.
Suddenly, he noticed a small dot that had inexplicably appeared on the surface of the sea in the distance.
It moved entirely by the waves, so it was almost certain that it wasn't a living creature.
"Move over there and take that thing."
Upon receiving Norn's command, the monstrous octopus immediately changed direction and moved towards the small dot.
As the distance drew closer, the outline of the small dot became clearer—a wooden boat, or more precisely, a hollowed-out piece of wood.
The tentacles lifted the wooden boat from the sea and presented it to Norn as a gift.
A corpse lay inside the wooden boat, its dried flesh clinging tightly to the bones, and in places where the flesh had completely rotted away, the white bones were exposed.
His clothes were extremely worn, but it was barely possible to tell that they were the uniform of the Adventurers' Guild.
Adventurers' Guilds often send surveyors to investigate dungeons to provide a basis for strategy guides and map creation.
As far as Norn knew, exploration of the seventh level had ceased thirty years ago because the Howling Sea was too dangerous, and the vast majority of explorers never returned.
To date, only Byrne has successfully reached the eighth floor and returned to land. Most of the records of the seventh floor in the guides also come from this legendary adventurer.
The tentacles placed the wooden boat in front of Norn, who found a book in the cabin. It had been pressed under the surveyor and had not been weathered; it was probably his last words.
Norn carefully placed the book in his palm and gently turned the pages with his fingernails:
"Day 1 of entering the Sea of Sorrow:"
I really didn't want to take this job. This godforsaken place doesn't even have a decent big tree. Luckily, I've learned growth magic. This wooden boat made from the wood grown by growth is exceptionally useful, largely because there aren't many big waves on this sea.
Day 2 of entering the Howling Sea:
Just like what my senior said, there was a giant octopus in the sea. It looked really disgusting, but it didn't seem to be interested in me. Its hairy tentacles only lingered around me for a while before leaving.
Day 3 of entering the Howling Sea:
I still haven't found the island Byrne mentioned. All I see is sea, sea, sea—it's driving me crazy. Sometimes I really think Byrne never even reached the eighth level; this dungeon probably only has seven levels.
Day 4 of entering the Howling Sea:
My food and water supplies are exhausted, and I must return. The problem is, I don't know when I entered a thick fog, and the magical marker I set before I came is nowhere to be found. I must find it quickly; it will dissipate in three days!
Day 6 of entering the Howling Sea:
By the Holy Emperor! I've found it! I've found the island Byrne spoke of! It's hidden in the mist, unremarkable. Now the fog is getting thicker, and I feel I can't go back. Now I must head to that island, hoping there will be food and water there.
Day 7 of entering the Howling Sea:
That island is moving, that island is definitely moving. I've been paddling all day, but the island is getting further and further away. My hands are exhausted, I'm going to die. I hope the later surveyors will find my body. I'm sorry, I couldn't leave you with much of value.
"The island can move?" Norn pondered this information. It wasn't impossible in the dungeon, but it could also be a hallucination of the surveyor before he died.
Regardless, this surveyor deserves respect.
Norn carefully put his notebook into his backpack and let the tentacles put the wooden boat back into the sea.
"Big Bear and Little Bear, burn them!"
The two bears woke up rubbing their eyes, and each of them spat at the wooden boat.
The wooden boat caught fire and slowly sank into the sea.
At this moment, Norn suddenly opened his eyes wide in shock and looked around.
Dense fog!
Before they knew it, the monstrous octopus had carried them into a thick fog!
The fog around us grew thicker and thicker until the sea was no longer visible.
Norn felt a little creeped out, so he let the two bears lean against him and hugged their chubby bodies, which gave him a sense of security.
Unbeknownst to them, a jagged silhouette appeared in the thick fog in the distance.
"The island, that's the entrance to the eighth floor."
Remembering what the surveyor had said about the island moving, Norn ordered the Fatalis to speed up and rush toward the island in an attempt to catch up with it.
Norn hugged the two bears and hid in the meat pit, feeling a distinct push against his back.
They were getting closer and closer to the island, and the island's outline was becoming larger and clearer.
"Wait a minute! Isn't this island growing too fast?"
Norn quickly realized that the island's apparent size increase in his eyes wasn't just due to its near-large and far-small appearance; the island was growing taller!
The seawater in front of us suddenly rose, as if something was about to emerge from the sea.
The rising sea level created huge waves that crashed onto the monstrous octopus's head, and Norn quickly wiped the seawater off his face.
At this point, the island stopped growing, and Norn and his group were very close to it.
The mist drifted slowly, making the entire island appear hazy and indistinct.
Beneath the island, the waves that had just surged had not yet subsided, and hidden among the layers of waves, a pair of enormous eyes suddenly appeared.
A creature with an island on its head poked half its head out of the sea.
