37. The significance of reproduction

"Where's your... where's your class?"

After confirming several times, Sarah asked Norn with a look of horror on her face.

"It's a long story, but now you know why I wouldn't accept you, right?"

Norn quickly pulled his pants back up, not wanting to show Salado for even a second.

Sarah felt as if her bones had been pulled out, and she collapsed to the ground, utterly devastated. The joy she felt when she first met Norn was now matched by her utter despair.

She glanced back at the two charred corpses that Id had electrocuted, and whispered, "Since you can't have children, I'll let you take their place."

"Id".

Hearing Sarah calling him, Id quickly opened the door.

"Mom, is it over?" Id asked, looking like he was about to cry.

"Take him into the cave," Sarah said coldly as she put on her clothes.

On the way, Id learned that Norn had not had a relationship with his mother, and he was so happy that he danced with joy.

Norn and the hammerhead shark girl floated in the air, following behind Id.

Hammerhead Shark Girl was very weak because she had just given birth, and her tattered dress was stained with dark red dried blood.

"Where are you taking me? Sarah, you saw it yourself, I'm infertile! Let me go!"

Norn flailed through the air and shouted, but Sarah did not respond.

With no foothold in the air, Norn struggled for a long time but did nothing but fan Id.

If he still had the thief's cloak, he might have been able to escape, but now the cloak was being hoarded by that brat Id, with most of it hanging on the ground as he dragged it along.

They walked into a small grove of trees on the edge of the village, where there was a cave at the end of the grove.

Id snapped his fingers, and a white orb of light appeared out of thin air to provide illumination.

The sound of their footsteps echoed through the cave, and as they went further in, they could faintly hear strange noises coming from the depths of the cave.

The two stopped and arrived at their destination. Norn looked around.

He had thought Sarah wanted to lock him up, but now it seemed he was wrong.

There were no cells here, and with the limited illumination from the light orb, Norn could barely make out two things in the cave:

There was a small pool of black water, with several stalactites dripping water into it; and a large pit, pitch black inside, from which nothing could be seen, but the strange noises were coming from within.

"Let's get started, Id, let's take care of her first," Sarah said, pointing at the hammerhead shark girl.

Ide took a little black water from the dark pool, manipulated it to float to the girl's lips, and forced her to drink it.

A few seconds later, the girl, who had been on the verge of death, suddenly raised her head, her neck folded backward, and her spine snapped with a crisp sound.

Immediately afterwards, the girl's limbs began to flail and fold. Her shrunken belly suddenly swelled up, slowly expanding like a balloon being continuously inflated.

Norn instinctively closed his eyes, as if she was about to explode, and the result was exactly as he expected.

As the sound of a water balloon bursting rang out, Norn felt a few warm spots on his face.

When she opened her eyes again, the girl's stomach had completely burst open, and thick blood gushed onto the ground. A dense array of tentacles covered with eyes and mouths emerged from the girl's body.

As the same tentacles tore through other parts of the girl's body, she was no longer human and was completely transformed into a fleshy ball covered in bizarre tentacles.

"I love this, Mom! This one is even better than the last one!" Id clapped his hands in praise.

"Throw it down, Id."

No sooner had she finished speaking than the girl was thrown into the bottomless pit, and it took about two seconds before the sound of her landing was heard.

"Get the light sphere down."

At Sarah's request, the orb of light went deeper into the pit, revealing one terrifying monster after another.

Some looked like a large lump of minced meat, covered with mouths of all sizes; some still retained a human shape, but were covered with yellowish-green pustules; some were centipedes composed of human heads joined together...

Before seeing these, Norn had always thought Picasso was an abstract artist.

The things in the pit are like creatures pieced together haphazardly, like jigsaw puzzle pieces.

They were drawn to the orb of light and hissed as they tried to catch it.

Norn suddenly had a guess: Could that gluttonous monster have escaped from here?

Sarah stared at the monsters, then finally picked one and said, "I remember that one was put in two months ago. Kill it."

Id immediately released a fireball, burning it to death. Just like the gluttonous monster, a crimson light appeared in its corpse.

A blood crystal, as big as a human head, was pulled from the corpse and floated into Sarah's hand, dripping with blood.

"Great! This one's really big! You're such a good boy, Mom!"

Sarah smiled and patted Id's head; for Id, this was the best reward.

"So that's why you want so many children, right? To turn them into monsters, and then kill them to get the blood crystals."

Norn finally understood his previous questions and knew his fate was about to unfold.

"That's right. Not only these children, but also Ide and I will face the same fate in the future. The meaning of our lives has never been about procreation, but about this beautiful stone."

Sarah held up the blood crystal in her hand, gazing at it with rapt attention.

"Next up is your turn!" Id grinned wickedly, took out a little black liquid, and was about to stuff it into Norn's mouth.

"You think I'm going to sit here and wait to die? Watch your eyes!"

Norn quickly closed his eyes, and dozens of irregularly shaped orbs of light instantly appeared around him.

He poured almost all his magic into these orbs of light, making them frighteningly bright; a single glance could cause temporary blindness and dizziness.

"Damn it!" Id cursed angrily, quickly covering his eyes.

As the light faded, Norn, taking advantage of Id's momentary lapse in consciousness, raised his hand and shot out a white snake that electrocuted Id.

The levitation spell on his body dissipated, and Norn landed back on the ground, then took off running.

Just as he was about to rush out of the cave, a sudden burst of white light appeared behind him, and a bolt of lightning struck Norn squarely.

Norn's hair stood on end, his consciousness nearly vanished, and he collapsed to the ground, convulsing uncontrollably.

After a while, Id, his eyes bloodshot, came out and kicked Norn viciously.

"You bastard! You scoundrel! How dare you make my mom cry!"

He dragged the immobile Norn back to the cave, and after removing Norn's equipment with Sarah, he planned to feed Norn the black water.

"Joso! I swear in the name of the Holy Emperor, we have definitely just passed through here!"

"Shut up! Follow me, you can't go wrong. Hey! Look, there's light, the exit is right there!"

The voices of two men came from a nearby cave. Sarah and Id stopped what they were doing and stared in horror at the dark cave.
