71. Soul-Stealing Water
Soul-stealing water, as the name suggests, can steal a person's soul, turning them into a puppet enslaved by pleasure.
It was invented five years ago by an unknown pharmacist who simply wanted to create a potion that would stimulate the breeding desire of livestock.
After discovering that the potion was addictive, he began to sell it everywhere and made a fortune. Although he was eventually caught and sentenced to death, he had already spread the recipe for the Soul-Stealing Potion.
Faced with the Potion of Souls, even the most steadfast warriors will turn into a lump of mud, the most virtuous nuns will sell their bodies to drink it, and the most loving mothers will sell their children for that one sip.
One of the chief's wives had been exposed to this substance and within a day transformed from a gentle, elegant, and beautiful woman into a madwoman.
To help her overcome her addiction, the chief tied her to the bed for a week, believing that a prolonged abstinence from the drugs would cure the addiction. However, he hadn't anticipated that her dependence on the pleasure had become deeply ingrained and worsened over time. In the end, unable to bear the pain any longer, his wife bit off her tongue and committed suicide.
After that, the chief hated the Soul-Stealing Water so much that he immediately issued a decree that anyone who made, sold, or drank the Soul-Stealing Water should be executed without exception!
This is why Berto and the others are so afraid.
They had only heard of the effects of the Soul-Stealing Water before, but now that they had actually seen people addicted to it, they were still too frightened to move.
Norn's muscles bulged, his features contorted like a mad beast, as he struggled and roared at the half-empty bottle of Soul-Stealing Water. The cross-shaped rack swayed violently, as if it would break at any moment.
The fox-man quickly closed the iron gate, afraid that the sound would get out.
Berto calmed himself down, walked over, picked up the Soul-Stealing Potion, and went to Norn.
As the purple potion approached him, Norn quieted down, his eyes fixed on the bottle with intense longing.
"Give it to me, please, I'm in so much pain..." Norn pleaded in a hoarse voice, looking haggard.
Berto was moved by this, and the anger he had been harboring towards Norn was no longer visible in his eyes.
"If you want it, answer me first: where is the hideout of your accomplice, Batel? Tell me and I'll give you some."
Upon hearing this, Norn became heartbroken and cried out in grief and indignation, "How many times do I have to say it? I'm really not one of them! I've been deceived!"
"I really don't know anything! Sir, please spare me, give me the medicine, I really can't take it anymore!"
!!!
Berto was struck dumb; his pupils instantly shrank to the size of pinpoints, and he opened and closed his mouth several times without uttering a word.
"Are you telling the truth? You really don't know anything?"
Norn tried his best to put on an exaggerated crying face, opening his mouth wide and making harsh, intermittent sobs, each sound like a heavy hammer blow to Berto's conscience.
"I'll probably go to hell."
Berto thought to himself, and put the medicine bottle into Norn's mouth. Although Norn didn't want to taste that bitter flavor again, he cooperated and sucked the medicine bottle like a calf suckling milk in order to play the part.
After the last drop of the potion entered Norn's mouth, he swallowed it despite the discomfort, then rolled his eyes and made a face of pure bliss before passing out.
Berto threw the empty bottle to the ground and smashed it. He collapsed to the ground, all his strength gone, and clutched his head in pain.
"It's over, all the leads have gone cold."
They had been lying in wait near Miguang City, and after a lot of effort, they finally located Batel and his group, but they managed to escape.
Now, not only can it not find the whereabouts of those humans, it has also turned an innocent boy into a walking corpse.
Regret, anger, and resentment festered in his chest, making it almost impossible for him to breathe.
Berto, who was never one to smile in front of his subordinates, shed tears for the first time.
At this moment, the fox-person patted it, "Stop crying here, hurry up and figure out how to get rid of him, or we'll be in big trouble if someone finds out!"
Upon hearing the word "handle," Norn's alarm bells went off, and he opened his eyes a crack to check the situation.
Berto stood up, picked up the scalpel he had used to threaten Norn, and prepared to slit Norn's throat.
Norn's heart was in his throat, ready to unleash lightning to stun them the moment Berto made his move.
Unexpectedly, Berto suddenly lowered his right hand, which was holding the knife, and said, "This stuff should be something I can quit."
"Don't get your hopes up. If you're hooked on this stuff, you'll either die or live a life of utter despair. Quitting this 'soul-stealing potion'? I've never even heard of such a thing! If you really feel guilty, just kill him and end his suffering!"
Berto hesitated for a while, but in the end he didn't do it. He threw away the knife and began to unlock Norn's shackles.
"Are you crazy? If you can't do it, I will!" The fox-man said, about to strike, but was stopped by Berto.
"It's too easy for him to die like this. Although he was misunderstood, there's no doubt that he helped humans escape. I'm going to throw him into the wilderness and let him suffer and die on his own."
After hearing this, Norn felt a huge weight lifted from his heart. He closed his eyes in relief and relaxed his body, trying to make his sleep look more real.
The fox-man still felt it wasn't safe, but it couldn't go against Berto's wishes and had to compromise.
They wrapped Norn in black cloth and carried him out of the rock fortress in the dead of night, placing him on a wagon.
After a long, bumpy ride, they arrived at a secluded grove of trees.
Norn was left lying in the grass, still unresponsive, like a corpse.
"I must be crazy to do something like this with you. If I could do it all over again, I would definitely run out and report you!" the fox-man cursed.
"If I could do it all over again, I would hope you would do it this way, but it's no use saying that now. If we just keep our mouths shut, nothing will happen."
The two climbed onto the carriage and drove off.
Norn lay quietly on the ground, listening to the sound of the wheels slowly fading away, before finally getting up.
"Phew, I'm exhausted after putting this on for so long." Norn patted the dirt off his clothes, which he had bought from Wemon's shop, and they were now filthy again.
It's clear that Norn won't be able to return to Miguang City. Although he can still withdraw money from other demi-human savings banks by relying on the mark on his arm and then continue his carefree life in another place, Norn doesn't plan to do that.
Batel and the others escaped because of him, and those trafficked children were unable to return to their parents' arms because of him. Norn could not bear this sin and live on.
Recalling the reactions when he helped Batel and the others, Norn felt that their gratitude towards him was genuine. As long as he fabricated a lie about being hunted by demi-humans, he would surely gain their trust.
Norn silently made up his mind, summoned a ball of light, and began searching for a way out of the forest.
