72. Haven't decided on a title yet.
Rays of morning light pierced through the tree canopy, dappled and broken by the swaying leaves.
A gray hare found a tree stump, took a deep breath to prepare, and then charged forward with all four paws.
clatter--
With a crisp thud, the rabbit's head was smashed open, its hind legs twitched twice, and it died.
In the nearby bushes, Norn got up, picked up the rabbit carcass, found a grassy, treeless cliff edge, sat down, and clumsily dismembered and skinned the rabbit.
Using lightning magic, I lit a pile of dry leaves and branches and then put the rabbit on top to roast.
The forest was larger than Norn had imagined; he walked all night with the orb of light but still couldn't get out.
Exhausted and with an empty stomach, Norn decided to replenish his strength before continuing his journey.
The blood-red rabbit meat was quickly roasted until golden brown. Since the internal organs hadn't been removed, Norn tossed the torso aside and picked up a rabbit leg to eat.
Suddenly, a dark shadow landed in front of Norn and crashed into the fire.
Norn quickly got up and saw that the person who came was a dog-headed man.
It fell to the ground in agony, carrying a bamboo basket on its back, much of the firewood inside having fallen out during the fall.
"Ouch! It hurts so much..." The kobold curled up in pain, howling incessantly.
Norn quickly stomped out the remaining flames to prevent roasting the kobold.
After a long time, the kobold recovered and, panting heavily, carefully tried to get up, but then collapsed again from the pain.
Norn saw it clutching its leg and realized it had injured it.
"Kind sir, can you help me? I came from a nearby village to gather firewood, but my legs are killing me and I can't walk anymore," the kobold pleaded with Norn.
Norn didn't answer, but instead squatted down and pulled up the kobold's pants to check his injuries.
My left leg is okay, just swollen from the fall, but my right leg has a much bigger problem.
A short piece of firewood, as thick as a wrist, was completely embedded in his thigh, and a large amount of blood gushed out like a fountain.
"Oh no, you're badly injured. If you don't stop the bleeding soon, you might not survive."
The kobold was horrified upon hearing this and hurriedly said, "Get some strips of cloth or something and tie it up!"
"No need for that."
Norn plopped down on the ground, and with a slight thought, the kobold immediately felt an ethereal voice speaking in his mind.
It couldn't understand the words, but it understood the meaning: "Do you want to switch legs with him?"
Although the kobold was confused, it subconsciously understood the implications and immediately agreed.
The next second, the firewood in the kobold's right leg was squeezed out by the rapidly growing flesh, and the pain disappeared instantly.
"Huh? What's going on?"
The kobold slowly got up, cautiously touching his seemingly healed right leg.
"Hey! Amazing! My right leg is healed!"
The kobold stood up excitedly, intending to thank Norn, when he noticed that Norn's trousers were flat on the ground.
"Now it's your turn to help me walk. I'll pull my legs back when we get to the village," Norn said, sitting on the ground.
"Okay!" The kobold slung one of Norn's shoulders over his own, and Norn hopped along.
A few minutes later, a dirt road appeared, and following the road, several wooden houses slowly came into view.
The village was small, with only a dozen or so households. The dog-headed man was familiar with everyone else in the village, and when they saw him bringing a strange human, they couldn't help but ask:
"Who is this person?"
"He's my savior!"
The kobolds took Norn home and, after settling Norn in, summoned his brother Dio.
After explaining the whole story, Dio first thanked Norn, then found a clean bandage and wrapped it tightly around the bloodstains on his pants.
"Brother, I'm ready!" Norn retracted his right leg as soon as he finished speaking.
The pain returned, and blood seeped through the white bandages. Dio helped the kobold to the bed.
After a while, Dio brought over a glass of milk and a sandwich. "Sorry, there's nothing good in the village."
Norn didn't seem to mind, and while eating, he said to Dio, "I gave up my leg to save your brother, and this is how you repay me?"
"I understand, I understand." Dio said, turning to give Norn the money, but Norn stopped him:
"I don't want your money, I want you to do something for me."
Dio stopped, looking somewhat troubled. "What does my brother want me to do? If it's something I can help with, I'll do my best."
"Don't be nervous, do you know where Valshiri's village is?"
Dior nodded.
"Take me there, the sooner the better."
Dio breathed a sigh of relief after hearing Norn's request, and his tone became lighter: "No problem, I remember the village chief has a horse, I'll ride it to take you there."
After much pleading and cajoling from Dior, Norn finally got to ride on horseback and was led out of the forest by Dior.
At noon they arrived at the dilapidated village of Valhiri.
Norn found the house where he had encountered Batel and his group, pointing in the direction they had fled, and said, "Could you do me one more favor? Keep running that way."
Without saying a word, Dio immediately spurred his horse and charged off.
As the ruins of the houses receded into the distance, they were once again surrounded by lush green grass.
Norn's eyes darted around, and suddenly he saw a dark red glow in the distance to his right.
"Go that way!"
Dior immediately turned the corner, and what happened next sent chills down its spine.
A patch of dried blood suddenly appeared on a grassy field, with rotting entrails scattered in some places. Norn believed this was where those demi-humans had died.
"You can go back now, thank you," Norn said to Dio as he dismounted.
Dio felt uneasy and, upon hearing Norn's words, quickly turned his horse around and fled at full speed.
Norn also found some craters and burn marks here, which were clearly not left by a fight with cold weapons.
"Could it be that Batel and his group had accomplices? Of course, it's also possible that they were double-crossed, and that person killed Batel and his group as well."
Norn rejected the idea as soon as it came up. If it were a case of double-crossing, the bodies of Batel and his crew couldn't have disappeared without a trace. There were no humans among the bodies that Berto and his crew were transporting at the time.
Norn continued looking and finally found a barely noticeable tire track in the grass.
Continuing along the tire tracks, time flew by and dusk arrived.
Norn arrived at a forest where the soil was harder, and the tire tracks were almost invisible. Norn could only wander aimlessly, calling out as he went, "Bartel! It's me, Norn! Come out and see me!"
As darkness fell, Norn's throat grew dry from shouting, and his stomach began to rumble.
Just as he picked up a branch, intending to find a place to make a fire and spend the night, a familiar voice came:
"Lord Norn? What are you doing here?"
Batel peeked out from behind a tree and asked.
