73. Black Mage
"Bartel?" Norn couldn't see him clearly, but he confirmed his identity when he got closer.
Batel looked somewhat uneasy, glanced around for a long time, and then asked, "What are you doing here?"
Norn immediately flew into a rage, yelling, "It's all because of you! Explain yourself! Did you kidnap those demi-human children?"
Batel was taken aback by this reaction and nodded.
"Damn it, you've really ruined me! Do you know what those demi-humans did to me, mistaking me for your accomplice?!"
"They not only confiscated my property, but also arrested me and interrogated me, forcing me to reveal your whereabouts. My dog friend was tortured to death by them!"
Norn spoke with tears streaming down his face, his voice filled with sorrow and despair, making Batel lose all face and wish he could disappear into the ground.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to leave you behind, but I really had no choice! Those demi-humans are trained regular soldiers, and I simply couldn't handle them."
If it were just me dying, I would gladly sacrifice myself to hold them off, but I have two sons! How will they survive without me?
Seeing Bartel's reaction, Norn knew he was right; Bartel's gratitude towards him was genuine.
"I went through all sorts of trouble to escape, and now I'm completely out of armor. If you really feel bad for me, then bring me into your business too," Norn continued, pressing his advantage.
Upon hearing this, Batel immediately became troubled and remained silent for a long time.
"What? You're worried about me sharing your money? Do you even know how much money was in that carriage that the demi-humans took because of you? And you're still worried about your pittance?"
"No, no, no! I'm doing this for your own good. We ran into a dark sorcerer while we were escaping. He wiped out all the demi-human soldiers chasing us in one fell swoop. When he heard we were involved in the human trafficking business, he wanted a piece of the pie too. If I hadn't had connections, I would have been killed by him too!"
"We're too busy escaping to drag you into this!"
A dark magician!?
Norn's eyes lit up instantly; he was determined to go in no matter what!
"What kind of damn dark magician is he? I'm penniless now, why would I be afraid of him? Lead the way!"
Batel sighed deeply. "Please come with me."
Norn summoned a ball of light to illuminate the area, and Bartel led the way to a dark cave.
The cave was a maze of interconnected passages with many forks. After wandering around for an unknown amount of time, Norn suddenly saw a row of torches stuck in the stone wall.
"This is our base," Batel said.
"Including that dark mage, there are only four of you?"
Batel nodded and continued walking forward.
After descending a stone staircase, the passageway turned into rows of iron cages, inside which lay several demi-human girls lying haphazardly.
There are lizard people and bear people, but most of them are cat and dog-like demi-humans.
They were all bound hand and foot with chains, lying motionless on the ground.
"Are they all dead? Why isn't there any movement?" Norn asked.
Batel pointed to the food bowl and water bowl in the cage, "They are fed regularly. As long as the child has food and water, he won't die."
"Why do they all seem to be girls? There aren't any boys?"
"Who would buy a male demi-human? The real valuable ones are the hybrids born from female demi-humans and humans. Those hybrids are all stunningly beautiful and very popular with important people. I heard that one of them can sell for more than a thousand gold coins! It's a pity that I don't have male slaves here specifically for breeding, otherwise I definitely wouldn't sell these demi-humans."
"How much can one of these purebred demi-humans sell for?"
"It depends on the breed. The cat and dog demi-humans are the most expensive, and one can sell for five or six gold coins. The others sell for three or four gold coins."
"That must be quite profitable, considering you have so many demi-humans around."
Batel smiled wryly: "It's not that profitable. Stealing a batch of demi-humans usually costs a lot of money. Drugs, seduction, hiring people, which one doesn't cost money? Not to mention, sometimes we encounter things like last time."
To be honest, business near Miguang City is getting harder and harder these days. I'm planning to sell all the demi-humans in this cave and then quickly move to another location to continue my business in another territory.
As they were talking, Batel lifted a curtain and stepped into a more spacious area.
Although several torches and glowstones have been placed here, the light is still very dim.
In the corner were several burlap sacks and a large water vat. Several pieces of cloth were laid out on the ground as a bed, and Batel's two sons sat on the ground facing each other, playing cards.
Upon seeing Batel bring Norn in, the two immediately shouted, "Our benefactor!"
"Go quickly and get Lord Norn some food and drink," Batel ordered.
The two nodded and quickly ran to the piles of sacks to get to work. Finally, one of them, carrying a water cup, and the other, carrying a black bread, came to Norn.
Enraged, Batel slapped the man to the ground. "Look at your pathetic state! This is how you treat your benefactor? This stuff is for beasts! Bring over the wine and meat!"
The two sons immediately ran back, crawled into a cave, and took out a jug of mead, some dried meat, and a piece of slightly smelly cheese.
"Sir, we haven't gone out to resupply these past few days to avoid trouble, so this is all the food we have for now. Please make do with this."
Norn snatched the food and began to eat it without any hesitation.
While Norn was eating, Bartel explained the whole story to his two sons. "Let's give a round of applause! Welcome Lord Norn to our team!"
The three clapped casually, and the eldest son spoke up: "Father, don't we still have a problem to solve? Shouldn't we involve Lord Norn now...?"
Norn knew he was referring to the dark mage, wiped his mouth, and said, "I insisted on getting involved. I don't care how troublesome that guy is, you all have to share my money. Don't forget, all my misfortunes are your fault!"
No sooner had he finished speaking than the curtain at the door was suddenly lifted, and Batel and the others tensed up instantly, staring intently at the newcomer.
Norn turned his head and saw an unremarkable-looking man walk in.
He was dressed in a black robe, carried a large leather bag on his back, and held a blood crystal that shimmered with red light in his hand, his eyes fixed on Norn.
This guy must be the dark mage, right? He looks a bit different from the one under Angre's command.
"And who is this...?" the dark mage asked.
Batel stepped forward and said, "He is the great benefactor who saved my father and sons. He was driven to desperation by the demi-people and had no choice but to come to us for help. He will also join our business in the future."
The dark mage squinted at Norn for a long while before finally speaking:
"Nice to meet you. You can call me Pulsi."
