Chapter 24 Superpowered Baby, Locomotive Defeated
Not long after, Su Mo, Butcher, and Hughie arrived at the Ren Ci Hospital in the central district.
The black Chevrolet silently glided into the parking lot. After the engine was turned off, the interior was completely silent, except for the slight "click" of the engine cooling down.
Looking at the magnificent and imposing Mercy Hospital before him, its bright glass curtain walls reflecting the city's neon lights in the night, and the huge red cross emblem flashing on the rooftop, Su Mo couldn't help but sigh in admiration.
"Ha, how ironic. I never imagined that this so-called 'merciful' hospital would be doing this kind of thing behind the scenes. Using newborns for experiments, tsk tsk tsk." He shook his head, his gaze sweeping over the slogans symbolizing "hope" and "new life." "Is this democracy and freedom? New York!"
His tone was full of sarcasm.
"Alright, enough talk, Su Mo." Butcher interrupted his musings, quickly checking the magazines, the cold metal gleaming in the dim light inside the car. He touched his usual pistol at his waist, his tone cold and firm, "We need to get in quickly. We need to hurry, before the Vought Group reacts, moves, or destroys the evidence, and find what we need. Every second could be crucial."
The three acted immediately, like shadows blending into the night. They avoided the main entrance and went around to the staff entrance on the side of the hospital. Butcher skillfully unlocked the first electronic lock.
Su Mo's X-ray vision penetrated the walls, providing real-time updates on the patrol routes of the internal security personnel and the blind spots of the cameras.
They moved swiftly and quietly, like a special forces team that had practiced countless times, and soon found the room marked "Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) - Special Observation Area" deep in the hospital's intricate corridors.
The security level here was significantly higher, but Butcher disabled the door lock system with a small electronic jammer.
Upon entering the room, a mixture of disinfectant, baby milk scent, and some indescribable cold metallic smell hit you.
The room was dimly lit, but the scene was chilling. Dozens of specially made baby incubators were neatly arranged, each connected to complex monitoring equipment and IV tubing.
Butcher's sharp eyes quickly scanned the area and soon spotted his target above an incubator—a large bag of liquid emitting an eerie blue fluorescent glow, the label on the bag barely legible. An IV drip was slowly infusing this "Compound No. 5" into the vein of a sleeping baby inside the incubator.
Under their watchful eyes, the baby in the box seemed to be disturbed and unconsciously opened its eyes. Instantly, two weak, unstable beams of blue energy shot out from its pupils, hitting the specially made glass inside the incubator with a "sizzle" sound, creating tiny ripples before dissipating.
"Holy shit!"
Butcher couldn't help but mutter a curse, taking a half-step back, his pupils slightly contracting in shock.
"Super Baby!"
The scene before me was far more impactful than I had imagined; it was no longer a distant rumor or a blurry photograph, but a living, breathing crime in progress.
"It seems the Water Group truly deserves to die!" Su Mo's voice deepened. He approached the insulated box, looking through the glass at the small body inside, which was writhing restlessly due to the release of a faint energy. His gaze was complex. "Using the purest life as fuel for their ambition and profits. This group is rotten to the core."
He had already sentenced the Water Group to death in his heart.
Hughie stood there, pale-faced, but his hands were unusually steady. He held up his phone, started recording, and the trembling lens firmly captured everything:
A strange blue compound bag, an IV tube connected to an infant, a screen displaying abnormal vital signs on an incubator, and other incubators in the room also connected to unknown liquids.
His breathing became rapid, and he muttered to himself, "Take pictures of everything. This is all evidence, enough to show the world Walter's true colors."
Suddenly, a lighthearted voice, tinged with mockery and amusement, broke the heavy silence in the room from the open doorway behind them.
"Wow~ Wow~ Wow~"
Accompanied by rhythmic footsteps, the figure of the locomotive, dressed in a blue bodysuit, slowly emerged from the shadows of the corridor, a signature smile on his face that carried a hint of cruel amusement.
"Look what I found! A lost little mouse named Hughie, and his companion."
He tilted his head, his gaze sweeping over the three men before finally settling on the gun at Butcher's waist and Hughie's phone, as he began to state his accusations against them.
"Don't you know that trespassing into the highly confidential medical research area of the Vought Group is a serious violation of the law? And it looks like you intended to sabotage and steal trade secrets?"
"I don't care about your fucking laws!" Butcher roared, his suppressed rage exploding instantly. Without any hesitation, he drew his pistol as he turned, and with fluid movements, fired repeatedly towards the direction the locomotive was standing!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
A deafening gunshot rang out in the confined space. Bullets tore through the air, sparks flew from the muzzles, and brass cartridge cases clattered to the ground.
However, before the gunshot had even finished, Butcher felt a blur before his eyes as an irresistible force slammed into his chest.
With a "whoosh".
He didn't even see how the locomotive moved. He was hit head-on by a speeding truck, instantly thrown off the ground, his back slamming heavily against the hard concrete wall behind him with a dull thud. He then slid down the wall and collapsed to the ground, the excruciating pain making it hard to breathe, and his pistol flew out of his hand.
The locomotive's figure slowly solidified in its original spot, as if it had never left. It dusted off non-existent dust from its hands, put its hands in its pockets, and swaggered over, its face full of mockery.
"Hey, calm down, buddy. Don't you know that bullets are like slow motion for a speedster like me?" He casually turned to the side, using two fingers to catch the heavy crowbar that Hughie was slamming down from the side with all his might.
Locomotive didn't even look at Hughie. With a slight flick of his wrist, a tremendous force sent the crowbar flying from Hughie's numb hand. Immediately afterward, Locomotive casually delivered a side kick, striking Hughie squarely in the abdomen.
"Ugh!"
Hughie cried out in pain, his body curling up like a shrimp as he was kicked backward, knocking over an equipment cart and landing not far from Butcher, curling up and dry heaving in agony.
The train engine walked to the center of the room, looking down at the two who were temporarily incapacitated. He glanced at Su Mo, who had remained standing still the entire time, and continued in his infuriatingly lighthearted tone, "Seriously, you guys just came over like that? Why didn't you bring more people, or bring some decent superhumans?"
He drawled, his gaze landing on the expressionless Su Mo. "What? Scared stiff? Standing there, too scared to move? Come on, have some sense of humor, okay?"
The person the train engine mentioned who was "terrified" was none other than Su Mo. But Su Mo wasn't terrified. The instant Butcher was knocked away, Su Mo's muscles had already instinctively tensed, and he had entered a fighting state.
However, his superhuman senses and calm analytical ability allowed him to instantly determine that although the locomotive's attack was swift, it seemed to have deliberately controlled its force, and although Butcher was injured, it was not fatal or crippling.
This guy was trying to trick him into revealing information. So, Su Mo suppressed the urge to attack immediately and decided to teach that impulsive Butcher a lesson. But seeing Hughie also knocked down, and the Locomotive's taunts growing increasingly harsh, he knew it was time to end it.
The instant the locomotive uttered the last word "entertainment spirit," Su Mo moved. The paving stones beneath his feet cracked slightly, and he launched himself like a cannonball, throwing a straight punch! Simple and direct.
"Whoosh!"
As expected of a speed-type superhuman, at the critical moment, his body once again turned into a blurry afterimage, narrowly avoiding the heavy punch that was enough to pierce through steel plates.
He appeared a few meters away, his contempt slightly fading, replaced by a hint of surprise and even greater interest.
"Wow! I never expected this! You've been hiding your true strength! You're actually a superhuman! A power type? Not bad!" As he spoke, his body moved at high speed again, creating whistling winds in the room and leaving behind countless elusive afterimages.
"But kid, do you think you can hit me? No matter how hard your fists are, it's useless if you can't hit your target!"
Before he finished speaking, he launched an attack on Su Mo from various tricky angles. His fists, hand chops, and kicks rained down like a storm, each strike carrying the terrifying kinetic energy of supersonic movement.
However, to the amusement park train's dismay, all his attacks landed on Su Mo with dull "bang" sounds, as if striking an incredibly hard alloy.
Su Mo did not try to block, letting the punches and kicks that were powerful enough to pierce ordinary steel plates land on his shoulders, chest, and back.
Su Mo's body remained completely still, without even a sway, and his clothes were not torn.
"cut!"
The locomotive sped up, its attacks became more frequent, but a barely perceptible hint of anxiety began to creep into its tone. "So, all you're going to do is cower like a turtle? Your superpower is just being incredibly resilient!"
"Since you're in such a hurry to end this," Su Mo finally spoke, his voice calm. He patted the chest where the train engine had kicked him and brushed away non-existent dust. "Then so be it."
On the other side, Butcher, who was barely able to prop himself up, coughed up a mouthful of bloody saliva, but grinned.
Seeing Su Mo's composed demeanor, he knew he had it in the bag. He reached out and pressed down on Hughie, who was struggling to get up, his voice hoarse but certain: "Don't move, kid. It's alright, just watch. Watch Su Mo's performance."
His gaze was fixed on the battlefield.
Just as the locomotive transformed into a streak of blue lightning, attempting to circle behind Su Mo at top speed to launch an attack, its high-speed trajectory passing right beside him, time seemed to slow down. Su Mo's lowered eyelids suddenly snapped open, his gaze flashing with brilliance!
He observed all the locomotive's movements, and with lightning speed that even the locomotive could hardly catch, he reached out with his right hand and grabbed the locomotive's thigh and ankle, which were unable to change direction immediately due to inertia as the locomotive was moving at high speed!
"Got you." Su Mo whispered.
Immediately afterwards, he unleashed his core strength, his arm muscles bulged as he grabbed the train's ankle, and with himself as the axis, executed a clean, crisp, and violently aesthetic over-the-shoulder throw!
The locomotive only had time to let out a short cry of surprise before it was forcibly pulled out of its high-speed motion by an irresistible force, tracing an arc before slamming headfirst into the ground!
"boom!!!"
A deafening roar, far more muffled and terrifying than the one that came from Butcher's earlier slam into the wall, followed. The specially made floor tiles shattered in a spiderweb pattern, and dust billowed everywhere.
The locomotive lay in the shallow crater it had created, its blue battle suit torn, its face covered in blood and grime, filled with unbelievable terror. Its entire body ached as if its bones had been broken, and all that remained were painful groans.
Su Mo restrained most of his strength; otherwise, that blow would have been enough to turn the locomotive into a pile of minced meat. He walked to the limp locomotive, squatted down, and with an almost polite calm on his face, said to the writhing locomotive, "Hey, brother, are you alright? You don't look too good. But don't worry, we're not killers."
He said in a relaxed tone, "But to prevent you from running around with those troublesome legs again, or suddenly deciding to run away, we can only help you 'rest' for a while."
As soon as he finished speaking, in the reflection of the train engine's suddenly magnified pupils, filled with fear and pleading, Su Mo raised his right hand again.
"Snap! Snap!"
Two clear, teeth-grinding sounds of bones cracking rang out.
"Aaaaaaahh ...
The locomotive erupted in a heart-wrenching scream. The excruciating pain overwhelmed his consciousness like a tsunami. His eyes rolled back, his body convulsed violently a few times, and he finally lost consciousness completely. The screams abruptly ceased in the room.
Su Mo stood up, shook off non-existent bloodstains from her hands, her expression remaining unchanged.
Hughie, clutching his stomach, struggled to his feet. He looked at the unconscious locomotive on the ground, its legs bent at an odd angle, then at the expressionless Su Mo. His Adam's apple bobbed, his face paled, and he whispered, "Isn't this...isn't this too cruel?"
Although the train engine was his enemy who killed his girlfriend, witnessing such a swift and brutal violent response and hearing that extremely shrill scream still shocked his ordinary heart, making him instinctively feel uncomfortable and... a trace of pity.
"Let it go, Hughie." Butcher also stood up, leaning against the wall. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, walked over to Hughie, and patted him on the shoulder.
His gaze fell on the locomotive, his eyes filled with no sympathy, only cold pleasure and deep hatred.
"There's no need to sympathize with this kind of scum. Think about Robin, who was smashed into a bloody mist by him at high speed, and think about all the innocent ordinary people who died. Think about how he just toyed with us and treated human life like dirt. To be merciful to him is the greatest cruelty to the victims." (When I wrote this, the fifth season of Black Robe hadn't been released yet, so I won't try to whitewash A-Train.)
He paused, then added, "Su Mo has already held back; at least he's still alive. Moreover, crippling his leg is to prevent him from continuing his evil deeds, and also for our own safety. It's fair."
The room fell silent again, save for the rhythmic ticking of the instruments and the faint sound of an alarm in the distance. The blue "Compound No. 5" continued its slow drip, and the super-giant baby in the incubator occasionally stirred restlessly. The evidence was in hand.
