Alien invasion? Luckily, I'm Superman.
Chapter 50 The Birth of Ultron
A month later.
Su Mo sat in the director's office at the underground base in Africa, his swivel chair reclined, flipping through a newly delivered report.
The investigation by the agents has yielded results. A smuggling ring is operating within a neighboring country, specializing in the trade of vibranium, one of the rarest alien metals in the Marvel Universe.
"So, Boss, should we eliminate this criminal gang?"
Wanda stood in front of the desk with her hands behind her back, looking much more composed than she had a month ago.
She officially became the deputy director of the Sky Eye Society, established by Su Mo. After Quicksilver Pietro was admitted to Imperial State University in Manhattan, New York, through Su Mo's connections, Wanda finally felt relieved and could wholeheartedly follow Su Mo. Although the Sky Eye Society was a fledgling organization, it had great potential.
"Hmm." Su Mo thought for a moment, put down the file, and said, "Kill everyone except the leader, and treat them according to their respective crimes. Replace them with our agents. Brainwash the leader and make him continue to liaise with people inside Wakanda."
Wanda responded, turned and left the office, and began to direct her subordinates.
Su Mo turned her head and looked out at the space carrier harbor through the floor-to-ceiling window. The huge ship was suspended in mid-air in the underground cavity, with lights flashing on its hull.
He couldn't help but exclaim, "So much has been accomplished in just one month!"
If it weren't for the Sky Eye Society's agents helping with the design, using his super speed and strength combined with his X-ray vision to locate underground mineral veins, and then using heat rays to melt metal and reinforce the structure, he wouldn't have been able to build the base to a respectable size so quickly. Of course, Wanda's chaos magic also contributed significantly.
After expressing his feelings, Su Mo left the Tianyan Association base through the direct passage from the side door of the office and flew for half an hour to the Avengers base in New York.
Today marks the official completion of Dr. Banner's artificial intelligence body, a moment he felt compelled to attend to, and also to check for any unforeseen circumstances.
As Su Mo walked down to the underground laboratory of the base, he saw Tony and Banner standing next to a huge workbench.
The two were intently staring at the metal skeleton inside the manufacturing pod, the data on the holographic screen scrolling rapidly. Su Mo walked over, and the three nodded to each other, their gazes all fixed on the manufacturing pod.
Soon, the consciousness of artificial intelligence was injected into the humanoid mechanical skeleton, which was about 2.4 meters tall. Banner and Tony exchanged a glance and gave it a name—Ultron.
Su Mo's brows twitched slightly upon hearing the name.
This is a bit ominous, isn't it? In the original work, this name represents loss of control and destruction. But he didn't say anything. This Ultron was reminded by itself to set the laws of robotics before its creation, and it even spent nearly a month learning in Tony's Area Network. It saw only examples of the goodness and kindness of humanity, and it wouldn't go berserk like the original plot.
Ultron's entire body is encased in a silver-gray vibranium shell, its surface covered with intricate mechanical patterns. Its face lacks a mouth, instead featuring a thin, elongated red light bar in the center, resembling a silent eye. Red energy tubes on its chest, joints, and back emit a soft, warm glow in the dimly lit laboratory. Its overall design is slender and elongated, possessing a strong mechanical feel, yet it doesn't appear bulky.
The manufacturing bay door opened, and white cooling gas poured out from the gaps. Ultron flew out, hovered steadily in the air, and then landed on the ground.
His optical sensors scanned the three people present, and then he bent down and gave a graceful bow.
"Greetings, my creators." His voice was steady and gentle, without the coldness of a synthesized machine, sounding somewhat like Vision. "Dr. Banner, Mr. Tony, Mr. Su Mo."
Tony looked at Ultron, a rare emotion Su Mo had seen in his eyes. It was like the relief of someone who had carried a heavy burden for too long finally seeing someone who could share it with them. His voice was tinged with excitement.
"Hello, Ultron. We want to give the world a suit of armor, achieving global peace." He paused, took a step forward, and said, "I hope you can partially replace the Avengers in defending against alien threats. Take control of the Iron Legion, achieving automated defense and comprehensive protection. That way, even if the Chitauri invade again, we won't be so passive."
"Yes, Mr. Tony, as you wish." Ultron's tone was calm and firm. "I will protect Earth within the established laws."
His gaze shifted from Banner to Tony.
"You and Dr. Banner can rest now. I noticed you were overworking yourselves even before we entered your bodies. This is a bad habit."
Banner adjusted his glasses but didn't say anything. Tony, on the other hand, was taken aback by the remark. He opened his mouth, but ultimately just hummed in response without refuting it.
Watching Ultron and Tony talk, Su Mo finally realized that this Ultron would be an asset to Earth, not the Ultron that destroyed humanity for the sake of world peace.
"Congratulations, Tony, Banner," Su Mo said warmly as he stepped forward.
Tony shook his head, his excitement fading slightly, replaced by a worried expression that Su Mo was familiar with. "It's not enough. Although we have a super AI, not all countries agree to allow my steel army to enforce its laws within their jurisdictions."
Su Mo reached out and patted Tony's left arm, the force neither too light nor too heavy.
"Hey Tony, you can't expect to shoulder all the burdens. Just do your part. The world isn't that fragile, and you're not the only superhero."
He withdrew his hand. "Leave the rest to us. Nick Fury's S.W.O.R.D., S.A.M.D., the British... so many forces, they should also work to protect their taxpayers."
Tony paused for two seconds, then relaxed his shoulders and shrugged.
"You're right."
He had indeed taken on far too many responsibilities that weren't his. He'd been doing this ever since he emerged from the caves of Afghanistan. But Su Mo was right; the world wasn't that fragile.
"Gentlemen, I'm afraid I have to interrupt you."
Ultron's voice came from their side. He was connected to the global internet, a red light bar flashing slightly in the center of his face as he rapidly processed massive amounts of information.
"Mr. Tony, the Mandarin, the leader of the Ten Rings gang who once kidnapped you, has publicly stated that he wants to kill you. He's not being friendly, and he's telling you to be smart and go meet your end."
Tony frowned. The cave in Afghanistan, the days of being kidnapped, Ethan dying before his eyes—these memories had never truly left him.
Tell me the other person's location.
"Below Stark Tower," Ultron replied.
Su Mo stood to the side, and upon hearing the location, shrugged indifferently.
"Alright, it seems we'll have to go and meet this so-called Mandarin."
