Gold Rush Starts in the Bering Sea
Chapter 4: Recruiting
The next morning, Jason got up early, ate breakfast, and couldn't wait to go into the back warehouse.
Holding a notebook, he familiarized himself with each item on the ship's equipment, comparing them one by one.
After thinking it over last night, Jason decided to familiarize himself with the equipment first. He didn't have to be good at it, but he couldn't be completely clueless about how to operate it.
What if we only find one person in the end? In that case, we'll still have to do it ourselves.
Gold panning in the Bering Sea is only possible for three months each year, starting around June and ending around September, though the timing may vary depending on the climate.
But the actual time was even less; the storms in the Bering Sea were the most dangerous, which undoubtedly further compressed the already limited time for gold panning.
For Jason, who is still a novice at gold mining, finding people and familiarizing himself with the equipment are two essential preparations he must make in the period before starting his gold mining journey.
I compared each item, practiced each one, and kept memorizing as I went.
Ada arrived at the warehouse door at some point, marveling at the sight, hoping that her younger brother wasn't just a flash in the pan.
"Jason, do you want to come to town with me later?" Ada asked.
"Ada, you've come at the right time. I'm a little confused about this hot water pump. Could you teach me how to use it?"
Since Jason was already there, he went straight to Ada and asked her a question.
"This, this, you must open it, especially when you go into the water. The Bering Sea is freezing cold; it can kill you," Ada said very seriously.
Many newbies come here every year to try their luck, but quite a few die in various accidents. He doesn't want that to happen to his younger brother.
"And here, make sure the suction nozzle of the gold suction pump is never pointed at a person."
"Make sure you check the location and navigation carefully. Don't go to the wrong place. Some public areas are fine, but don't go into someone else's mining area!"
"When it comes to diving, you must test the supply equipment beforehand, especially underwater. If the supply equipment malfunctions, don't panic. Slowly ascend along the rope."
"Also, there are many piles of rocks on the seabed, and there is indeed a lot of gold hidden in the crevices, but you must be careful how you do it, as quite a few fools have been killed by falling rocks."
"Of course, the most important thing about gold mining can be summed up in just three words."
Don't be greedy!
Ada pointed to each piece of equipment and explained, each precaution having a story behind it, lessons learned through blood and tears.
When she said the last three words, Ada's face became very serious.
"clear"
Jason nodded emphatically.
"The Bering Sea is a place of strategic maneuvering, not only against time and against the sea, but also against oneself!"
"Greed is something every gold prospector has, but it must be kept in moderation!"
"Too little, no ambition."
"Too much of it poses a huge risk of death!"
"You must be prepared for any situation. You can earn money all you want, but you only have one life!"
Ada kept repeating herself, afraid that her younger brother would forget everything she had said once he saw the gold.
"Ada, how about this, you come out to sea with me?"
Jason stared intently at his older brother, and his words made Ada's lips twitch slightly.
Ada looked at Jason with a wry smile and shook her head: "Jason, did you invite little Hart like that yesterday too?"
Jason nodded, his gaze fixed on Ada.
"Jason, you need to understand one thing: first, you've never succeeded before; second, you're a beginner."
Ada's words were concise and to the point, and although they seemed contradictory, they illustrated Jason's current predicament.
A novice usually means someone who knows nothing, especially on the Bering Sea. No one will trust a complete novice.
Gold panning in the Bering Sea is inherently risky, and given Jason's situation, very few people would be easily fooled by a few words.
Secondly, those who come here to seek their fortune are already aiming for success, and they have absolutely no trust in someone who has never proven themselves!
Jason nodded, his brow furrowed slightly; this was his Achilles' heel.
Although Ada didn't say it explicitly, her attitude made it clear that she wouldn't join.
Are we really going to recruit newbies?
"Ada, you're my brother, is there any way?" Jason asked, unwilling to give up.
Jason underestimated the situation. Although he knew he could succeed with his ability to find gold, who would believe it?
"Come on, let's go to town. I'll introduce you to a few people," Ada patted Jason on the shoulder, adding meaningfully, "Oh, and little Hart's here today too."
"Walk!"
Jason excitedly placed the notes in the cockpit of the Lillian.
Even though I know it might not be successful, it's still an opportunity!
·······
In the small town, accompanied by the clear sound of bells, Jason followed Ada into the small bar.
The warmth emanating from the fireplace instantly made Jason feel much warmer.
"Ada, Jason, over here," Little Hart stood up and waved to them.
Jason looked over and saw that in a corner of the small bar, besides Little Hart, there were two men and a woman talking about something, and the atmosphere was very lively.
"Come on, let me introduce you," Ada said, smiling as she walked over.
"This is my brother Jason, this is Brent, this is Eric, this is Corinna, and I won't introduce little Hart," Ada introduced them.
"Hello, hello, hello," Jason said, shaking hands with each person in turn.
Corinna was alright; she looked to be about the same age as me. Her coat was placed to the side, and she was wearing a tight-fitting wool sweater and skinny jeans, which accentuated her curvaceous figure.
She had long, flowing golden hair and a rosy complexion.
Looking at the beer glass that was already half empty, it was clear that quite a bit had been drunk.
Brent was a burly man who was a full 1.9 meters tall with thick arms. Even though it was winter, the muscle lines visible around his neck made him look like a tough guy.
The roughness and weight of the hands during a handshake are enough to demonstrate this.
As for Eric, although he wasn't particularly muscular, his neat buzz cut and the clearly defined muscles under his rolled-up sleeves suggested that he was someone who worked hard all year round.
Since they were all around the same age, they quickly became acquainted thanks to the beer.
Corinna is currently the captain of a gold mining ship. She is only 22 years old and came here two years ago. She works alone, which inevitably makes Jason take notice.
She used to be a crew member on a ship, but this year she spent all her savings and took out a loan to buy a small gold-digging boat.
Brent and Eric are currently crew members, but they are freelancers and haven't decided on a new job yet. Of course, they are not newcomers; they only started working last year.
These two are not locals; they are from Florida and have been friends since childhood. Corinna, on the other hand, is from Texas.
Ada met them by chance; they were all good people with similar personalities, which is how they gradually became acquainted.
The purpose of this drinking session was simple: to see if Brent and Eric could be persuaded to join the Lillian.
However, seeing Corinna's determined look, Jason smiled slightly and didn't take it to heart.
Just kidding. With thousands of years of drinking culture and the experience of being whipped in the workplace in my past life, I still can't beat you.
The atmosphere was lively, with Jason and Corinna competing against each other.
Little Hart and Ada exchanged a smile, sipped their drinks, and chatted idly.
Drinking is drinking, and he explained his situation clearly, but Jason didn't really talk about salary or benefits.
Jason's face flushed, and he said seriously, "Brent, Eric, I've already explained my situation to you. Let's not talk about money over drinks. You can come to my house tomorrow, we can take a look at the boat, and we can discuss the details then!"
Corinna retorted, "Brent, Eric, we've known each other for quite some time now. Boarding my ship can make you money!"
Simplicity, honesty, and money can truly touch people's hearts!
Jason downed his drink in one gulp and said magnanimously, "Don't worry, money is no problem. We have all the necessary equipment. Besides, I come from a family of gold miners."
"Damn rich kid!"
"No, no, no, this is an advantage of my family."
······
The two men were not to be outdone, while Brent and Eric remained silent, laughing and drinking.
Lacking experience, and with older ships having fixed crew members and too little turnover, the salaries for those who want to join a ship will definitely not be high. That's how they got by last year.
They had originally planned to board Corinna's ship this year, but after hearing about Jason from Hart and Ada, they decided to wait.
They all lack money, but the Bering Sea is too uncertain.
If you make the right choice, you'll make money.
Make the wrong choice, and you'll reap nothing for a whole year!
They're also weighing the options!
