Warhammer: Starting with Industrial Revolution
Chapter 32: Who's a decent person fighting head-on?!
The helicopter in the sky quickly reported that visual reconnaissance was extremely difficult due to the dense forest, making normal detection almost impossible.
Governor Karl listened to the report and looked anxiously at Ronin. "What should we do? Should we just keep setting fires?"
Ronin shook his head and looked at the plants around him. Although the towering trees in the square where the mutants gathered had been almost completely burned down by the first wave of incendiary bombs.
But it was clear that this deadly forest was not so afraid of fire. No firebreaks were even built, and the fire did not spread as quickly as expected. It only produced thick smoke and then slowly died down.
Clearly, this place is completely different from the world Luo Ning lives in, and his plan to set the mountain on fire is no longer feasible.
But soon, he thought of another method, one he often used when he was a teenager.
He deployed his infantry unit inside the cave, placing them under strict guard and ordering them to open fire at the slightest sign of trouble.
On the other side, the logistics department transported the trees that had been felled nearby to the inside of the cave.
It didn't take long for the already small opening to be almost completely filled with tree trunks, reaching a depth of nearly twenty meters.
The soldiers on guard inside the cave would fire occasionally, but overall the mutants did not mount a large-scale resistance; they were mostly just curious about what the humans were doing.
However, Viktor, the chief priest of the Mechanicus present at the scene, immediately understood what Ronning was doing. He simply walked away silently, without interfering or getting involved.
When the cave was completely blocked by trees, the infantry set the trees on fire on Ronin's orders.
It was clear that these trees were not very flammable, so he had to increase the firepower and add more incendiary agent.
He was thinking about how to land the armed helicopter next, so that the wind generated by the rotating helicopter blades could help the fire and also increase the speed at which the smoke spread into the cave.
At the same time, a rumbling sound came from behind Luo Ning, the sound of tank tracks.
Ronin turned around and saw Viktor slowly walking towards him, with a slightly modified tank behind him.
The chief priest of the Mechanical Church transformed the vehicle with the ease of magic. Although it was unclear what method he used, seeing the structure on the vehicle that was clearly a blower, Ronin only had time to step forward and bow deeply to Victor.
"Thank you, Father." He said sincerely. Viktor had almost fully understood Ronning's plan the moment he gave the order to start moving the trees, which was a huge help to him.
Victor didn't say anything, but simply nodded slowly and then stepped aside.
Luo Ning understood immediately and directed the machine to the cave entrance, where he began to gradually increase the airflow of the hairdryer.
With the help of a hair dryer, the tree stump blocking the hole was no longer as difficult to ignite as before. Starting from sparks in the wood, it gradually turned into a visible flame, and eventually into a raging fire.
Flames, accompanied by billowing smoke, surged continuously into the depths of the cave.
Governor Karl, after witnessing this series of actions, finally realized what was happening.
"Great idea, Ronin! This way we don't need to send troops in; we can just burn them all to death!"
Hearing Governor Karl's words, Ronin could only smile helplessly, and even Viktor, who rarely spoke, couldn't help but speak up.
"Your Excellency, even if the heat from these trees reaches the depths of the cave, it would absolutely not be enough to burn the mutants inside who have access to water."
Hearing Victor's words, Governor Karl looked puzzled. "Then what are you doing?"
Before Luo Ning could explain, the helicopter that had been scouting overhead sent a message.
"Report! Report! Smoke has been detected at two locations on the mountain! No, those are mutant caves! Mutants are escaping out!"
"Open fire immediately upon detecting smoke, destroy the cave, and seal off any possible escape routes for the mutants!"
Ronin immediately issued the order. That's right, the whole plan wasn't about burning the mutants; the difficulty of spreading the heat throughout the cave was simply too great.
But if it's just about letting the smoke in, that's much simpler.
From the moment Luo Ning saw the black smoke billowing from the tree branches, he had already made up his mind. However, at first, his plan was not so comprehensive; he only thought of using the airflow from the helicopter to promote the spread of the smoke.
With the hair dryer that Victor had temporarily modified, although it was just a simple temporary modification, the effect was outstanding and it perfectly met Ronin's requirements.
With the sound of explosions coming from afar, Luo Ning knew that the reconnaissance helicopters were bombing the discovered cave entrance.
Although finding the cave exit was very difficult due to the dense forest, the smoke markers made it much easier.
However, it was very difficult for Governor Karl to understand all of this on his own. Ronin patiently explained it to him until the latter finally understood.
"I see. Instead of going in and fighting those monsters to the death, why not force them out to their deaths?"
"That's it." Luo Ning nodded. The positions outside the cave had been completed, with infantry and armored vehicles forming lines of defense that were virtually impregnable.
"So you blew up all the smoking areas, which means..." Governor Karl said, trying to think, but Ronin directly revealed the answer: "That means, this is the mutants' only exit."
"What if they just stay inside and refuse to come out? Will the smoke suffocate them?" Governor Karl couldn't help but ask.
Ronin looked at him, but felt only a sense of surprise. At least in the past, Governor Karl's most frequent question was "What should we do?" He rarely asked him "Why?"
But Victor, standing to the side, calmly remarked, "The thick smoke won't suffocate them, but the oxygen will."
"We've set fire to the cave's only exit, and sealed off the other exits," Ronin added. "Their oxygen supply will dwindle, and if the mutants refuse to come out, we can go in and collect their bodies by this time tomorrow."
"So that's how it is?" It was only at this moment that Governor Karl fully understood Ronin's plan.
He looked at Luo Ning in front of him and couldn't help but smile mischievously as he pulled Luo Ning into his arms.
"You're such a cunning kid, your tricks are getting more and more insidious."
Luo Ning smiled shyly, but before he could answer, a huge explosion rang out, blasting out the burning wooden stakes piled up at the cave entrance.
Immediately afterwards, a gigantic mutant roared and charged out.
