Chapter 33: Mutants are more disgusting than you think

Following behind the giant mutant, the other mutants also rushed out.

But what awaited them was wave after wave of intense firepower; they fell before they could even do anything.

The infantry's defensive fortifications were arranged exactly as Ronin had requested, effectively preventing friendly forces from interfering with the firing lines while simultaneously providing crossfire.

Even though people inside the cave tried to fight back from time to time, it was to no avail.

Soon, the mutants' attempt to counterattack failed, and the logistics troops quickly sealed the entrance again and started the fire again.

Ronin had no intention of giving these mutants any chance to breathe; even the slightest lapse in vigilance against the enemy could lead to a completely different outcome.

After all, Luo Ning had also experienced the tragedy of dancing in the enemy's fountain when victory was assured, only to be caught off guard and wiped out in one fell swoop, with the enemy then pushing back to their base and ultimately suffering a dramatic comeback defeat.

Losing in a game is fine, no big deal. But on the battlefield, he dares not be reckless.

Time passed by, and Governor Karl, exhausted, even took a nap in the armored vehicle at the rear, while Ronin and Viktor kept a close eye on the situation at the front.

The mutants still launch sporadic counterattacks, but their strength has clearly been decreasing.

The armed helicopters responsible for reconnaissance in the air never stopped for a moment, searching for any undiscovered hidden exits and maintaining a report every ten minutes to prevent any accidents.

Everything was proceeding in an orderly manner. Five hours had passed since the fire was started, and the supply troops continued to add new firewood to the fire at the cave entrance.

Even the shrewd and calculating Viktor couldn't help but look at Ronin, calling him the most cautious commander he had ever met.

Luo Ning simply smiled; he was also calculating the time.

The mutants haven't made a sound for two hours; it's probably about time.

He ordered the troops on the defensive line to prepare, turned off the blowers, and the logistics troops to blow up the wooden stakes blocking the entrance and clear a path.

The cave was pitch black and eerily quiet, but the mutant corpses on the ground were clearly dead for a long time.

The corpses stretched deeper and deeper until there was no light or sight at all.

Three servo skulls quickly flew in and began scanning the entire cave.

Soon, the entire cave structure was teleported back, but unfortunately, for some unknown reason, although the servo skull was not destroyed, the deepest part could not be detected, as if there was serious interference there.

Left with no other option, Luo Ning could only send out two small teams to conduct an in-depth investigation.

This was the last thing he wanted to do; he didn't want to waste any of his troops, but he had no choice.

After all, it's certainly a good thing for those in power to be considerate of their subordinates, but they should never sacrifice their grand plans in order to protect their subordinates.

The team slowly entered the cave, reporting their progress continuously.

As the squad ventured deeper, both Ronin Victor and Governor Karl focused intently on the images displayed on the data panel.

Corpses were everywhere; clearly, even these mutant monsters couldn't escape the double attack of smoke and lack of oxygen.

Looking at the grotesque corpse on the ground, Governor Karl could no longer hold back and began to vomit violently.

Ronin patted him on the back and could only sigh, if Governor Karl had seen him in the square before the bombing, wouldn't he have fainted on the spot?

But then, a scream suddenly came from the video feed.

Luo Ning turned around, only to find that the screen on the data panel now only displayed a signal loss message.

"What happened?" He couldn't help but look at Viktor beside him, who was gently swiping the screen on the data panel. The image was reversed and finally stopped at the moment before the squad was attacked.

Even in environments with dense smoke and extreme oxygen deprivation, some mutants did not die.

Looking at the scene on the screen, Ronin saw that the mutants had clearly undergone severe mutations. Their bodies were rotting badly, their limbs had turned into deformed and twisted bones, and they were hanging upside down from the ceiling of the cave, like spiders waiting for their prey.

"Clearly, there are mutants among us who can survive in low-oxygen environments," Victor said leisurely. "However, they seem to lack vision. They weren't attacked when the servo skull passed by, but lost contact only when they went deeper."

Luo Ning nodded, then ordered the next squad to enter, and after telling them about the previous squad's experience, equipped them with flamethrowers that were more suitable for cave warfare.

Meanwhile, another squad will follow behind to provide support to the squad in front.

Having learned from their previous experience, the team proceeded much more cautiously this time, checking every nook and cranny of the cave before moving on. Although their speed was slower, their safety was significantly increased.

Luo Ning didn't plan to rush him, since he wasn't in a hurry.

Soon, the team arrived at the location where the previous team had perished. When they arrived, the monsters were clinging to the corpses of the first team, tearing at them frantically; some of them weren't even quite dead yet.

Without Ronin's command, the flames from the flamethrower were already spraying towards the group of monsters. The powerful flames instantly ignited the monsters, burning off the limbs of the closest monsters, while the monsters behind them fled inwards at the same time.

The squad pursued the enemy relentlessly and soon reached the deepest part of the cave, the place where the servo skull had lost signal earlier.

There, Ronin saw the most disgusting creature in the world.

The mutants' skin, twisted and no longer human-like, was severely ulcerated, and their bodies were covered with pustules that were constantly oozing fluid and emitting steam.

And this steam will obviously severely interfere with signal transmission.

If the mutants who could emit smoke that Soronin's twenty squads encountered after entering the forest were level one mutants, then the ones in the cave were level ten mutants!

These monsters have gathered every imaginable, spine-chilling element in the world, and just then, they discovered the exploration team.

The squad fired simultaneously, only to find that the monsters exploded the moment they were attacked. The thick liquid on their bodies was highly corrosive, and the armor worn by the defense infantrymen was dissolved instantly.

Screams continued, but fortunately, the support team arranged by Luo Ning had arrived, dragged away the wounded comrades, and launched the most powerful attack on the enemy.
