Chapter 67: The Future Should Look Like a Future
Hearing Viktor say this, everyone finally felt relieved.
The servants and the guards of the church retreated to the sides, making way for the group to continue forward.
Walking in the square, Luo Ning looked at the nearly 200-meter-high stacked structure in front of him, which was awe-inspiring. The densely packed doors were a residential area design structure adopted for complete efficiency.
The three of them, accompanied by guards, walked toward the residential area, while the other guards behind them began searching the entire square area.
Although the skull has been scanned by a servo system, it's highly likely that there are no more survivors left.
Stepping up the stairs, you can see a row of doors behind the fence. In fact, it's not much different from the corridors of ordinary apartments in China, only a bit more compact.
Under Ronin's instructions, the guards turned the doorknobs. Since Victor had gained control of the entire floor, all the doors had automatically unlocked and opened easily with a click.
Upon entering the room, it looked like a cramped little apartment. Right by the entrance was the toilet and bathroom, and further in was the bedroom with a large bed and a desk.
At the far end of the bedroom stands a huge glass window.
But what was outside the window was utterly astonishing.
Luo Ning walked over, looked at the scenery outside the window, and for a moment didn't know what to say.
It was a beach, where the azure seawater lapped against the sand, making a soft splashing sound.
A small number of people were happily playing in the water on the beach, with joyful cheers heard from time to time.
For a moment, Luo Ning was even a little stunned. He felt as if he had returned to the 21st century and arrived at a seaside town, instead of being in this deep underground space.
"The ingenious design is probably to prevent the workers living here from becoming too nostalgic for the outside world."
Viktor's voice suddenly pulled Ronin back to reality, and Ronin immediately understood.
What he was facing was probably just a huge screen, but the technology of humans in the Dark Ages was so advanced that he couldn't distinguish it for the time being.
"Lord Victor, where have all the residents gone?"
Ronin couldn't help but ask, but Viktor's electronic prosthetic eye only flashed a faint red light before he slowly said, "That is indeed a problem. This colony is quite large, yet we haven't even seen a single corpse. Clearly, something happened here."
"For example, chaos invasion, or AI rebellion."
Ronin couldn't help but sigh, while Viktor simply nodded slightly.
Although the exterior of this colony is almost unrecognizable, the underground area is remarkably well-preserved. One can only hope that the passage of time has washed away the filth of the past.
Whether it's the remnants of chaos or AI that is still active, both are taboo for the entire human empire.
He looked at Father Morales, who had remained silent beside him, and asked, "Father, have you discovered anything?"
"At least for now, I haven't sensed any chaotic contamination from the warp." Father Moraes held the warp detection device in his hand with the same reverence as if it were some kind of sacred object.
If Father Moraes says he couldn't detect anything, then the reason for the destruction of this place is very likely the Iron Man Rebellion of that time.
In this universe, AI is a taboo even more sensitive than chaos and heresy.
If there really is an Iron Man Core still in operation here, not to mention the STC fragments, the entire ruins must be destroyed immediately and completely, leaving not even a trace.
The court's extermination order will not give anyone a chance to defend themselves.
"Sir, a large number of human remains have been discovered." A soldier's voice suddenly came through the communicator, and Ronin immediately set off in that direction.
That was in the passageway behind the residential area, where a large number of mechanical guards had been smashed into wreckage, with debris extending into the passageway.
Inside, the ground was littered with white bones, resembling a scene of carnage.
Even after so long, it's clear that they were terrified before they died, scrambling to escape to the room at the end, but obviously, they all failed.
Having endured thousands of years of wind and frost, it has become incredibly fragile, turning to dust with just a gentle touch.
This passage is completely different from others; the walls are perfectly smooth mirrors, and the four corners of the passage are illuminated by a high-energy light source.
Deep inside that passage was a tightly closed door.
The soldiers stood outside the passageway awaiting orders; in this eerie place, no one dared to act without authorization.
Father Moraes looked at everything before him, murmured a prayer, and raised the subspace detection device.
Finally, he turned to Luo Ning and said, "Lord Luo Ning, there is no chaotic pollution here. However, this kind of enclosed death zone is extremely prone to subspace distortion, so please be careful."
Luo Ning nodded; he understood perfectly well as well.
Viktor stood at the entrance of the passage and looked inside, but did not take another step. Instead, he controlled the armed servant to go inside.
Just as the servant reached the middle, the entire passage suddenly lit up, illuminating it blindingly. In the next second, without even a moment to react, the servant was sliced to pieces by the laser.
Everyone was shocked by what they saw, especially the soldiers who had discovered the place. If they hadn't been able to control their curiosity, they would have gone inside.
They probably won't even have a chance to call for help.
But Viktor didn't care, as if this was the natural course of things, and he just stood there, deep in thought as if he were pondering something.
Ronin and Father Moraes exchanged a glance, but neither of them knew what Victor was doing.
About half an hour later, another servant, under Victor's control, slowly floated into the passage.
Just like last time, the passage became incredibly bright in an instant, but there was no further reaction, and the servant continued to drift unharmed.
With a ding, the door at the end opened, but it was completely dark inside, and you couldn't see anything inside from where you were standing.
Viktor turned to look at Ronin, who immediately understood what he meant.
Luo Ning captured the nearest soldier and sent him in to scout ahead.
But it was clear that the soldier was terrified but dared not refuse, and his whole body was trembling.
He gently patted the soldier's shoulder, his face full of righteous indignation, "Go, soldier. Consider this a suicide mission for you. When you get back, I'll personally go to Garan and ask him to promote you two ranks."
"What if I die, sir?" Although a promotion is indeed tempting, it is clear that people are not so easily confused when faced with a life-or-death situation.
"If you die, I will bring your whole family to the Governor's Mansion and give them a job there. That will be a life of wealth and honor for them."
"Sir, I'm an orphan! I don't even have a girlfriend!" The soldier's expression became even more desperate.
Luo Ning rolled his eyes, but still smiled and patted him on the shoulder:
"Don't worry, Lord Victor has completely shut down the laser traps in the passage. You won't die. Once you come back alive, you'll have a house in the core area and a stable job. You won't have to worry about not finding a woman."
Father Moraes then handed over a holy emblem, saying, "Take this, and the Emperor's light will protect you from defilement."
The soldier hesitated for a moment, then gritted his teeth, gripped his gun and the holy emblem tightly, finding some solace in that. He took a deep breath and stepped into the passage.
