Chapter 1299 Disappointment
Chapter 1299 Disappointment (First Update)
Following the coordinates given by the Imperial Guard, the knights activated their jetpacks just thirty seconds later, landing in front of the silver stone gate amidst thick smoke and completing their deployment. This was undoubtedly an extremely dangerous maneuver, far more dangerous than a low-altitude nighttime parachute jump, because the scorching smoke from the burning corpses obscured everything behind them, and no one knew whether the landing site had ground strong enough to withstand the impact, or whether they would step into a dangerous tide of blood. But for the knights, this was just routine military activity; their reflexes were fast enough to correct mistakes and adjust their posture in a short time, and their immense courage supported them in undertaking any dangerous action.
The knights' arrival brought powerful firepower support. Heavy bombs and chainswords stabilized the Imperial Guard's control area and pushed towards the narrow opening in the silver stone gate—enough for ten people to pass side-by-side. They quickly suppressed the extradimensional creature wearing a material universe shell. The fact that the stone gate only opened a crack was a result of Kamar-Taj's efforts, albeit a less than ideal one. However, this gave the Imperial Guard's Supiluliumus time to monitor Kamar-Taj's mages and ensure his work was flawless. Training a mage was extremely costly, requiring exquisite medicinal recipes, forbidden knowledge, extremely rare magical alchemy potions, and meticulously crafted magical artifacts—all rare resources in the world.
Even with such a long and costly training period, the sorcerers trained might not fully achieve Kamar-Taj's goals. Even those who perform well initially could falter during a mission due to a lack of resolve or concentration. No one knows what tomorrow will bring; this is the life of a sorcerer. Otherwise, the number of high-level sorcerers and the available personnel at Kamar-Taj wouldn't be so limited. For Supiluliumas, even if these sorcerers were the emperor's colleagues or even if they knew the emperor, it wouldn't prevent him from taking action against them when necessary.
The physical mutation has already manifested, and even a few seconds' delay could disrupt the spells maintained by the mages. Even if Mordo had some reservations about Supiluliumas's ruthless execution of the corrupted mage, if he were to carry it out himself, it would simply involve going through a few more procedures, marking the mage lying on the ground, his upper body shattered by the bomb, his remains burning under supernatural power, as a disgrace, and summarizing the experience as a lesson. That would be all.
Nothing was harmed except for his authority and self-esteem.
Mordo knew the Emperor's purpose in placing the Royal Guard in Kamar-Taj, but he couldn't stop what was legitimately done. More accurately, he was forced to support everything the Emperor did. The sorcerer families capable of objecting had long since been silenced by the Sorcerer Supreme's orders and Mordo's own strict enforcement. He had destroyed Kamar-Taj's independence himself. It wasn't until he saw the Royal Guard and Automaton entering Kamar-Taj that Mordo gradually realized the Sorcerer Supreme's scheme and the consequences of his actions.
Where there are people, there is politics. The Sorcerer Supreme, having lived for so many years, could still manipulate ordinary people even if he had no interest in the game of power. As a pioneer in eliminating the influence of the Kamar-Taj sorcerer family and a loyal servant of the Sorcerer Supreme, Mordo's schemes placed him in a position where he could neither oppose the Emperor nor oppose his actions. Whether Mordo would be dissatisfied was not a concern for the Sorcerer Supreme; he was merely preparing to integrate Kamar-Taj into a larger system.
Mordo now had neither the time nor the energy to stop the Royal Guard, nor the inclination to consider the conspiracy between the Sorcerer Supreme and the Emperor. He was the one leading the combined spells, guiding all the arcane mages outside the protective array in casting incantations to repair the wounds in the spacetime structure. His sense of responsibility forbade abandoning or neglecting this task. Repairing the wounds in the spacetime structure was an extremely troublesome matter, especially considering the bizarre creatures constantly appearing from the Gates of Hell. Without the protection of the Royal Guard and the knights, and without the highly aggressive Wanda Maximoff launching a direct attack on those behind the gates, the Shield of Seraphim alone would be completely insufficient to stop them.
Energy flowed in his throat, forming on his fingertips and parchment, slowly taking shape with the ringing of silver bells. Hundreds upon hundreds of finger-sized mirror-like fragments and sparkling runes combined and transformed before them, dizzying counterintuitive geometric shapes swirling and folding in their hands, Mordo and the other sorcerers constantly adjusting the parameters of the spell.
In human terms, they are creating a key to fill and unlock the wounds in the spacetime structure, smoothing out phenomena of spatial motion and gravitational anomalies. The three-dimensional spatial manifestation of that wound is a high-dimensional topological graphic, and the creations of Mordo and the arcane masters are also multi-dimensional creations. By deconstructing their creations, they are filling the wound while simultaneously repairing the three-dimensional spatial manifestation of the space behind the door, thus pacifying the gaps in the multi-dimensional structure.
This requires extensive advanced mathematical knowledge and complex mental calculations—a mandatory course for Kamar-Taj sorcerers. They use rational knowledge and intellect to replace the elusive phenomena of the outer dimensions, protecting their minds with the weakness of human intellect and stubborn dogma, observing that indescribable land with a narrow perspective to avoid succumbing to madness. Humble, insignificant, and weak humanity attempts to harmonize with nature using its feeble strength—this has been Kamar-Taj's uninterrupted work for millennia, with the only reward being the sublime spirit of martyrdom and a transcendent state of mind.
It wasn't until the Imperial Guards pointed their halberds at him that Mordo realized something was wrong with his mental state.
He awoke from his daze to find his fingertips sparkling, aimed at Wanda Maximov, who was standing with her back turned. It was a runic structure within a spell, which he had extracted and transformed. The Imperial Guard Supiluliumus, amidst hundreds of flashes of light, accurately detected Mordo's anomaly and intervened in time—a feat requiring immense talent and vast magical knowledge. "Your mind is sinking into darkness, your soul is wandering aimlessly," Supiluliumus said, looking down at Mordo. "Wake up. Don't let this malice affect you, or I will activate the emergency procedures."
"Never again." Mordo closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and said, "That was just a mistake."
At first, Mordo was somewhat dismissive, until he opened his eyes and saw the person standing in front of him.
"Wait!" Laura Crawford nimbly weaved through the surging tide of blood and slippery, corpse-strewn rocks, her heart filled with anxiety. She shouted that everything had been a misunderstanding as she tried to catch up with Yasok. Sharp bone fragments tore at her skin, and her combat boots sank deep into the jagged rocks. With each step, foul-smelling pus and blood gushed from the rocks. But Laura Crawford had no time to think about infection, because Queen Yasok and her people showed no sign of stopping. The priestess held aloft her gleaming obsidian spear, guiding her people like a beacon through the increasingly thick smoke. The rising corpse-strewn rocks beneath her feet paved a path for her and her people toward the Silver Gate.
Through the smoke, Laura Crawford could vaguely make out a tall, golden figure at the end of the path of corpses, its crimson robe trailing beside its boots. The golden armor gleamed with fire and smoke, and Queen Yasok brandished her spear, cheering loudly as her people quickened their pace behind her.
"You have disappointed me, Mordo." The Emperor reached out and took control of the spell the sorcerers had constructed. "His Holiness once thought you had the best mental fortitude among your peers, but I don't think so," he said. "You need to return to Kamar-Taj to relearn. Your position will be temporarily filled by the sorcerer Hamil until you retake your course in emotional management. This was a mistake, but there won't be a next time."
