Chapter 1573 The Lunar War

Chapter 1573 The Lunar War (Eighty-Five)

The terrifying angel spread its deep purple bat wings and raised its head high, revealing two large, curved horns. Its height far exceeded that of ordinary people; even Maximus, who had undergone a sacred marriage, appeared small before it. "This is destiny," it said to Maximus, seemingly to affirm the priestess's words. "I will behead your enemies for you, for it is the will of the gods."

"No, that is my honor!" Maximus retorted without hesitation, completely oblivious to the venomous glint in the "angel's" eight eyes. But when he extended his hand, the angel obediently lowered its head. "I will have a fair duel with my brother. The honor of the Attilan royal family cannot be tarnished; I must personally behead him, only then can I ascend my rightful throne."

"This is your right, no one questions it, but we must first defeat the invaders," Priestess Feliel hurriedly said. "The upper decks are lost in corrupt political rule and weak lies, the feeble royal family is powerless to resist the human army. Lead the army to defeat the humans, my Majesty. Only we who know the truth are capable of doing so, only we can let more of our people know the truth the gods created for this universe, only you can save them from their blindness."

Maximus nodded.

Priestess Feliel breathed a sigh of relief. She summoned the other priests to bring the silver greatsword from the altar. Normally, such a massive sword, as tall as a person, required extensive practice to wield, but Maximus, who had grown dramatically in height, masterfully twirled it without any instruction. The extremely heavy silver blade moved with effortless ease in his hands, and crimson psionic energy flowed through the special materials used to forge the sword, making it appear from a distance as if the blade was ablaze with a deep red, foul fire. Even the so-called angels standing behind Maximus revealed an almost uncontrollable greed when they saw the sword.

"This sword has imprisoned hundreds of millions of souls," the priestess said. "At the beginning of the sect's existence, countless craftsmen who converted to the gods gave their lives for this sword. They forged this sword with the lives and souls of an entire planet, hoping that one day someone would be able to wield this weapon. Now it is yours, and nothing in the world can stop your blade."

"You must strengthen yourself with the blood of your enemies." The angel grinned, revealing a mouth full of sharp teeth. Forged from humanity's most feared legends, it once roamed the deserts untouched by human civilization in ancient times, worshipped as a deity by human races lost to the annals of history. "Only in this way can you stand against that human king."

Jia Ying opened her eyes; the glass test tube had shattered on the floor.

Although everything in the dream had become blurry, the taste of the delicious wine from the test tube still lingered on her tongue. The terrifying mental shock still caused her eyes to bloodshot in that instant. She couldn't help but cover her face, pressing her fingers to her eyeballs, as if trying to push her eyes back in. A huge, armored hand grabbed her arm, followed by a sharp pain, and Jia Ying felt an unprecedented sense of relief.

"You've been dreaming for over ten seconds, which is dangerous. Your willpower is strong for a mortal, but not enough to withstand a mental shock from another dimension." Amon calmly withdrew the syringe, deftly applying a bandage to the needle mark on Jia Ying's arm. It was hard to imagine that fingers covered by armor and mechanical structures could be so dexterous. He had injected Jia Ying with a byproduct created by Maya Hansen during the development of genetically modified warriors. Its main purpose was to allow genetically modified warriors undergoing psychological indoctrination and chemical brainwashing to smoothly absorb large amounts of knowledge. As a byproduct of in-depth research in brain science, this type of optimized barbiturate drug had been recognized by the Institute of Brain Science and Neuroscience. "Now you need to forget everything you just saw, and don't think about the pink elephant."

Amon's little joke was of no use.

Jia Ying rubbed her eyes, and it took a while for her blurry vision to clear.

She saw the Emperor standing to the side, silent as he had been before she drank the so-called golden mead, his eyes fixed on the front lines, not on her. Just as in her dream, his gentle demeanor and sudden outbursts of fury were merely a mask to be removed at any moment, the real Emperor was as cold and ruthless as he was now, unwilling to even glance at her—but she was wrong. The Emperor turned and looked at her seriously—"What is your choice, Lady Jiaying? Do you choose eternal peace or the path of thorns?" The Imperial Guard, Amon, asked the question for the Emperor. "We have no time. The enemy is approaching reality. We need you to make a decision quickly."

Jia Ying did not answer, but stared straight at the emperor.

He stood on the deck, watching the roaring heavy vehicles slowly enter the battlefield below.

The escalation of firepower signified an increase in the intensity of the war. Even though reports from the front indicated that the so-called superdimensional spiritual entities were only a small fraction, heavy equipment from the Second Combat Group, including main battle tanks, had left their rear defensive duties. Within minutes, the density of indirect fire under the steel dome doubled, and the communication channels were filled with the anxious cries of ordinary soldiers. Even the brave genetically modified warriors coldly reported their need for support.

The monsters, the kind that only appear in nightmares, emerged from all unexpected places, plunging even the besieged positions into a fierce battle. Jia Ying saw the golden flames engulfing the emperor again, the intense heat distorting the air but failing to ignite anything. She noticed that the imperial guards around her were completely oblivious to the emperor's radiance. She blinked hard and found that the radiance had vanished, as if it were a hallucination left over from a dream, yet the soul-burning heat still enveloped her, refusing to leave.

Jia Ying couldn't see what was happening on the battlefield in the distance. She didn't know that the thin golden flames were like a storm sweeping across the battlefield. The enemies from another dimension felt their powerful strength slowly draining away, while the cyborgs in power armor with cold faces moved more and more nimbly, their tiny wounds healing.

"Was that a dream, or reality?" Her throat felt like dry sandpaper. The taste of golden mead faded, and the dry reality, tinged with ashes, rushed in, each word a torment. But in her eyes, the burning flames of war seemed to float on warm water, while she sank to the bottom, watching the firelight above through the shimmering surface. Even the pitiful cries were just muffled, faint sounds to her. Everything was irrelevant to her; only the brilliance in the emperor's eyes was deeply etched into her memory, even though she couldn't retain that memory. "Was that a lie or the truth?"

"Does it matter, Ms. Jiaying?" Amon, wearing a helmet and with his face covered by a golden visor, looked down at Jiaying with his ruby-like eyes. "The threat facing humanity is real. We need to fight to the death to survive. That's all you need to know."

"So what now?"

"A formidable enemy is approaching," Amon continued. "Fate has decreed that it will enter the battlefield of cosmic end, and we will prove that destiny can only be created by humankind, and that destiny is not immutable." If these words had been spoken by genetically modified warriors, they would surely have been filled with fanaticism, but the Royal Guard did not care. They did not care about the Emperor's ideologies; their role was to protect the Emperor himself, all His decisions, and any dangers that might jeopardize His personal safety. They possessed absolute loyalty, which was one of the reasons why the Royal Guard considered themselves superior to the genetically modified warriors. "You have a choice, Ms. Jia Ying."

"Who is talking to me?"

"I am the emperor's messenger, and what I say is what the emperor says."
