Chapter 1578 The Lunar War
Chapter 1578 The Lunar War (Ninety-One)
Maximus's current location remains a mystery.
However, the Emperor's campaign headquarters has now received a message from Tita. Legion Commander Malcolm instinctively judged that this message was related to the suddenly appearing extradimensional beings. Furthermore, combined with the intelligence provided by the Emperor, the appearance of those extradimensional beings was also related to Maximus, a psionic mind reader among the Inhumans.
When a large number of spiritual entities appear in the material universe, it is impossible that they were summoned by a wizard through incantations or magical rituals. It is more likely that they were created by opening a portal behind a veil that weakens reality and the outer dimensions, allowing monsters that crave life and souls in the material universe to pass through the crack in the material universe and come to this world.
Because this campaign would involve a large amount of heavy weaponry, and to prevent the Inhumans from amassing forces and preparing logistically in advance, the Emperor's initial strategy was to attack the upper levels of Attilan Citadel from the lower levels, while simultaneously seizing facilities such as the freight elevators to provide the attacking forces with a secure rear and sufficient transport capacity. The Emperor's strategy proved effective. The vast majority of logistical units, including medical and engineering departments, were housed on the decks below the upper residential areas. The freight elevators, controlled by the Immortal City's technicians, smoothly transported various supplies to the upper battlefield. Meanwhile, the seized power and production facilities contributed to the chaos in the Inhuman settlements, weakening their organization and facilitating the attack.
As one of the Emperor's most trusted units, the Sisterhood is responsible for protecting the logistics base in addition to participating in frontline combat. Now, Tita reports to command that the logistics base has been attacked sporadically by extradimensional monsters. Although the monsters have not caused any damage due to the logistics base's security measures (including but not limited to barbed wire, mines, and machine gun emplacements), Commander Malcolm astutely notices that the types of monsters encountered at the logistics base are unlike any previously seen in the upper deck living quarters.
"Your judgment is important, Corporal Malcolm."
Tita's beautiful face, once etched with displeasure at missing the front lines, now held immense pride as the longsword forged by the emperor himself finally drank blood. She had noticed more than once that extradimensional beings would instinctively avoid the sword, proving that this weapon, imbued with a fraction of the emperor's power, could inflict greater suffering on extradimensional spiritual entities.
"I need more manpower to protect the logistics base now. If the portal is really here, the enemy will definitely try to seize the production facilities we've taken over. Regardless of whether these demons were summoned by the Inhumans, their nature is to kill without end. The logistics base and defensive lines will be obstacles they can't bypass, and they will definitely launch a full-scale attack on this place."
Tita waved her fingers excitedly under the gaze of the other homunculus. As commander, she had to maintain a dignified and calm image in front of outsiders, and couldn't just jump up and down or act crazy like Catherine, otherwise she would have jumped up right now. She was already looking forward to the scene of the Emperor himself returning to the logistics base to take charge, but Commander Malcolm did not grant her "little wish".
"The second combat group still has a small number of mechanized troops available, which I will transfer to the logistics base to deploy defenses. I will also issue the relevant engineering requirements to the engineering commander of the Immortal City; mortal soldiers will need to assume some responsibility. I require the Sisterhood to act as insurance for the logistics base, as mortal soldiers may not be able to withstand the madness brought on by those spiritual entities."
Tita was not unaware of this situation.
Although the second-line troops stationed in the rear were elite soldiers among ordinary soldiers, after the adrenaline subsided, all of them experienced varying degrees of tension, and many reported to the political commissar and medical department that they could still hear the strange screams of the mad incarnations. Although many soldiers' mental state improved after a short rest and medication, it remained a significant hidden danger, especially since they were located on the lower decks rather than on the front lines, and the emperor could not provide them with psychological support.
Tita's tone was noticeably disappointed, but this was the power the Emperor had granted to the commander of the Malcolm Legion.
"I believe the political commissar's department will safeguard the soldiers' mental well-being."
"His Majesty is already aware of the situation at the logistics base."
The legion commander's next words greatly encouraged Tita.
"If necessary, He will personally protect the security of the logistics base."
Black Bolt, his face grim, walked through the city, which was gradually turning into ruins. Gunshots rang out just a street away, explosions and smoke billowed from the street corners, and the entire upper deck trembled slightly. He didn't want to see anyone, speak to anyone, or issue orders to anyone. The Inhumans' defeat was inevitable. He had obtained the best terms from the human king: to preserve the commoner clans and allow more innocent people to live, but at the cost of other genetically highly mutated clans and the crown of Attilan. Even though no one knew his deal with the human king, in his heart he had already cast the crown under his feet in exchange for the survival of the commoner clans.
He didn't know if his decision was right, but feelings of shame, anger, and regret lingered over him.
He kept thinking about what his father would have chosen if he were still on the throne, faced with this situation. Even though he knew it was impossible, he couldn't help but think about it, and the complex emotions led him to a conclusion. He believed that his father would never make such a deal; he might even have led his army to fight to the death against the human army, using the blood of the entire Inhuman race to make history.
This thought caused him immense pain.
Blackcard Burt desperately wanted to excuse himself, but he couldn't, because he knew this decision was the optimal solution given the current situation. The terrifying magical entities summoned by Maximus were beyond the Inhumans of Attilan's ability to contend with; the human army had to remain there to fight these extradimensional spiritual entities. He reasoned, recalling his father's extremely serious and decisive resolve. Perhaps, in certain events, his father could have sensed them and taken action—for example, Gordon's arrival in Attilan from the Inhuman settlements on Earth to report the destruction of the Afterlife; breaking the military treaties between clans to prevent further civil war and training an army; teaching all the Inhumans the truth about their origins—perhaps the human army wouldn't have attacked Attilan at all, but instead would have fought alongside Attilan against the Dark Order. But now it was too late; the outcome was already decided. As King of Attilan, he had to make the decision most beneficial to the Inhumans.
It wasn't until he encountered a group of scattered extradimensional spiritual entities that his rage was finally released through violence. He saw those monsters, seemingly emerging from hell, brutally slaughtering barely surviving civilians with serrated knives. As if infected by the atmosphere in the air, the anger in his heart and the dignity of his former king of Attilan drove him forward, and he uttered a single word to those monsters.
"Maximus, come to me."
He used his authority to broadcast his voice from the still-intact Attilan royal broadcasting center. This was only possible with the Emperor's help; without the Emperor, he would have had to return to the isolation chamber where he had spent a hundred years to speak safely. Few people in the world have heard his voice and survived, the vast majority separated by hundreds of neutralization devices and thick armored glass in the isolation chamber. Maximus was definitely one of them.
"If you're not a coward who can only stay under the protection of those monsters, then come see me now. You know where I am."
