Chapter 1583 The Lunar War

Chapter 1583 The Lunar War (Ninety-Five)

The pitch-black alloy door slowly opened, and air emanating from the cracks, thick with the pungent odor of disinfectants and cleaning agents, rushed out. The Immortal City technicians conducted a final check of the spacesuits' airtight protocols. After completing the input and decryption of keys on a computer housed in a high-strength shock-absorbing suitcase, their mission was accomplished. Other technicians, also carrying black suitcases, prepared for their next task—this team included alien technology research experts, senior researchers from the Immortal City's genetic laboratory, computer experts, and more—but before the excited research team could even step through the door into the dimly lit research institute hall, a knight captain, a legion sergeant, blocked their way.

"The interior of this building hasn't been cleaned yet." The legion sergeant gripped the chainsaw sword at his waist. Legion Commander Aparisha and the First Company Commander were constructing a defensive network within a hundred-meter radius of the building. Only two small teams, totaling twenty men, were accompanying the students into the Inhumans' genetic laboratory. "I believe there are rebellious forces inside."

"We have no time, Sergeant." Senior Researcher Soferon glanced at the nameplate on the sergeant's shoulder armor. "Time is life."

"Your safety is my responsibility, because your lives don't belong to yourselves." The legion sergeant casually pressed down on the senior researcher's shoulder, the sheer force causing the latter's expression to change drastically. Senior researcher Soferon had no doubt that the other could crush his shoulder blade with just a little force. "The fifth and sixth squads will be responsible for your safety; all operations must be carried out under orders."

The Fifth Knight Squad led the way, sending half a squad for reconnaissance, while the Sixth Knight Squad brought up the rear, sending half a squad to control all important escape routes. The research team, totaling thirty-seven people, moved in the middle, all their actions controlled by the genetically modified warriors. This mode of operation undoubtedly slowed them down, but none of the scholars, including senior researcher Soferon, could voice any objections. Upon entering the Inhuman genetic laboratory, the constant, low-temperature breeze from dozens of exhaust fans immediately cooled their curiosity and excitement about the new knowledge. The entire facility was unusually quiet; the gray-black alloy structure remained intact even after several rounds of artillery bombardment; the sparse lighting couldn't dispel the shadows ahead; frozen mist covered the black deck, and every inch of air exuded unease.

"I hope you don't mind what I just said." Senior Researcher Soferon wiped the cold sweat from his brow. The second door was within reach, but the key granted by Black Bolt might not be enough to open it, and no one knew what lay behind it. "We don't know what kind of monsters the Inhumans have created over the past millennium, but given the vast amount of time and genetic samples they've accumulated, they've definitely created things beyond our imagination."

Sofron, a senior researcher who once worked at Dr. Daniel Whitehall's research institute and was in charge of developing superhuman projects, possessed research results on Inhuman genes. Logically, he shouldn't have had the ethical concepts and mental burdens of ordinary people regarding gene research. However, after joining the Immortal City, he realized just how powerful gene research could be. The genetically modified warriors who were now protecting him were products created by the Emperor's wisdom: stable, powerful, intelligent, and obedient to orders. This was a goal that Dr. Daniel Whitehall had never been able to achieve in his entire life. Dr. Daniel Whitehall once thought that the Super Soldier Serum was the answer, but over the long years, all the experiments he manipulated the US military to conduct ended in failure. The only outstanding product he created was the Hulk, who was born by accident.

Senior researcher Soferon witnessed the achievements of genetic research, but also its most terrifying aspects.

Maya Hansen's laboratory contained many things and behaviors that challenged the nerves of ordinary people; even the most ruthless Hydra dared not claim to be able to ignore them. Sofron, a senior researcher who had once declared that ethics were of no benefit to science, wrote a letter to the Royal Guard overnight after seeing these things, demanding that the Emperor investigate Maya Hansen's genetic laboratory. However, all his requests went unanswered until he saw a Royal Guard member freely entering and leaving the laboratory.

The key provided by Black Bolt didn't trigger any alarms, but the genetically modified soldiers wouldn't easily trust this intelligence. Even command downgraded the key's trust level, instructing the First Company to remain vigilant when using it. Stepping into the silent corridor, everyone treaded lightly; the smell of rust and disinfectant filled the air. The fire support and assault teams, armed with fusible weapons, stood before the second door, awaiting the computer expert's key to open the blast door.

There was nothing behind the door, but no one breathed a sigh of relief.

"I smell blood," Sergeant Wattsman said in a low voice. He stood behind the assault team, who were armed with shields, holding a chainsaw sword and a bomb pistol. Senior researcher Soferon, recalling the survival indicators he had seen regarding genetically modified soldiers in low-oxygen environments, didn't ask any more questions. "Form up, assault team at the front," Sergeant Wattsman said, looking at the group of researchers in white spacesuits. "Hold your laser pistols. I know you're all trained. But you're not allowed to pull the trigger until I give you my permission, understand?"

"What, are you afraid we'll hit our own toes?"

"Very humorous, Researcher Soferon," Sergeant Wattsman gave a dry, cold laugh. "I'm worried you'll ruin something more important. I mean your brains."

"Maximus!"

The sonic waves, brimming with psychic energy, shattered the bodies of all the extradimensional spiritual entities within the fan-shaped area. There was no response, only an ever-growing bloodlust within him. The tuning fork above his head vibrated continuously, channeling his power into his arm. Black Bolt swung his fist, crushing the towering extradimensional spiritual entity before him. The entities vanished in the blink of an eye, like morning mist under the blazing sun, leaving only eerie, gurgling laughter. That sound infuriated Black Bolt Blackcard Burt.

"Coward! Come see me!"

Still no response.

Black Bolt felt the fire within him begin to ignite, eventually bursting into a raging inferno. His burning rage blinded him to the growing power within him and the gradual disappearance of the discomfort in his throat. He glared menacingly at every shadow unlit by the lights; half of the starlight-inspired lighting on the steel dome had vanished into darkness, leaving the city illuminated only by the flames of war.

"Don't hide in the shadows, Maximus!"

"As a psionic race, the Inhumans are easily affected by etheric energy."

"I know. Is there anything else you need to reveal, Supilulius?" Tita said. "My lord sent you here for more than just to protect the logistics base."

"The Homunculi were also conceived by His wisdom, and you, as daughters of my Lord, naturally deserve his trust." Supiluliumas ignored Tita's cold tone. "But your abilities are not as strong as the Royal Guard, and your other members are also composed of ordinary humans. I am merely issuing a warning and reminder that the girls under your command will also suffer from mental corruption. Do not think that your actions can deceive my Lord."
