Chapter 195 The Control Plan for the Arcane Mage
Chapter 195 The Control Plan for the Arcane Mage (First Update!)
"How's the result, Agent Coulson?" Nick Fury sat behind his desk at Pegasus Base, the bright white light reflecting off the white printed paper, making it particularly glaring. He felt a stinging pain in his eyes, as if a tiny grain of sand was repeatedly tormenting him beneath his eyelids. This was the result of lack of sleep, he told himself, and had nothing to do with those extradimensional beings. The Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them, rousing himself to ask his subordinate, "I'm eager to know the results."
"Sir, do you want to know about the Cosmic Cube or those giant bugs?" Coulson raised an eyebrow, a hint of displeasure in his voice. "You should have delegated this to someone else, instead of dumping everything on me. Project Pegasus is busy enough already, I haven't seen Audrey in ages, and I can't make phone calls here. You know I have a girlfriend, right?"
"After this is all done, you can have a long vacation." Nick Fury tossed the five-inch-thick report onto the table; he really didn't want to look at it. The students transferred from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Science Department had been involved in the entire autopsy of the extradimensional creatures. Knowing they would be dissecting so many "alien beings," these students displayed an astonishing enthusiasm. They meticulously recorded every detail—Nick Fury didn't want to know the differences in limb structure between the hell cockroach and the American cockroach, nor did he want to know the evolutionary path of species in Hell, nor how many eggs a female hell cockroach could lay at once, or whether those insect eggs were edible!
Good heavens! He absolutely has to get rid of that idiot who stuffed hellish cockroach eggs into his mouth, and that idiot even included a recipe! Jesus, who on earth brought this guy in?
You ask him how he knows these things? It's because, out of a sense of confidentiality, he foolishly tried to find what he wanted from the report himself. It took him a whole day to finally see Appendix G (Glands glands) – these students still need to learn, but not professional courses, but how to write reports. Their future bosses are not all professionals.
Especially this Gemma Simmons, her report was so long and tedious!
"I wonder if those disgusting bugs are related to our ongoing Tesseract experiment." He covered his forehead and sighed deeply. "That little bastard has disappeared again. S.H.I.E.L.D. found him at Stark Industries once, and then he vanished again."
"Isn't Salomon Damonette a student at Eton College?" Coulson shrugged; he knew perfectly well who Nick Fury was referring to as the little rascal. "And doesn't S.H.I.E.L.D. know his address in New York?" Agent Coulson said. "We can send someone to negotiate."
"So do you think he'll kill those agents who come to his door?" The director rolled his eyes, indignantly saying, "He's never followed any social order. Do you think he'll let them go just because they're agents we sent? We've disrupted his daily life! Salomon Damonet is an extremely dangerous target. I don't trust him, but I need him. Dealing with him requires extreme caution. I've seen his cold-blooded side; an entire team died at his hands."
"I've seen him too." Agent Coulson nodded, agreeing with the director's statement. "While I don't particularly like his methods, there's no denying that he fights for humanity and will eliminate anyone who interferes with him."
“We can’t take any action against him until we fully understand his abilities. All of Salomon Damonette’s files are handwritten. Aside from a select few, not many people within S.H.I.E.L.D. know of his existence; even the action team members haven’t seen his face.” Nick Fury slammed his fist on the table in frustration. “But the problem is, how much do we actually know about his abilities? Or rather, how much magic? We know nothing about him, nothing about Kamar-Taj, not even where this organization is. This is the most terrifying enemy I’ve ever faced. He can easily infiltrate our ranks, he can manipulate people’s hearts at will, and before this, we knew absolutely nothing. Even aliens aren’t as difficult to deal with as him, damn it!”
"Ordinary people's moral values are hard to bind him. Admittedly, he knows and understands these feelings, but he is loyal to the duties given to him and takes pride in them. I can see that he is trying to break free from the shackles of those moral values." Coulson hesitated for a moment, but continued to say more about his observations of Salomon.
"continue."
"He's too young, sir, a poor kid. Those responsibilities will crush him," Agent Coulson said. "S.H.I.E.L.D. has dealt with him so many times, and I've never seen him ask for anything for his own benefit, magic or extradimensional invasion. All those times, what he asked for wasn't for himself—he's like a saint, fighting for all of humanity. If I hadn't offered to treat him to something, he wouldn't even have tasted a burrito. He's so restrained of his desires, but I'm not sure how long he can maintain this."
"I had no idea you spoke so highly of him, but what I find even more confusing is whether you like him or hate him?" Nick Fury looked at his subordinate in surprise, never expecting that Coulson would give such comments to Salomon.
“I don’t think highly of him, sir,” Coulson shook his head, denying the chief’s assessment. “A man without a sense of self—I believe those responsibilities weren’t innate to him. He may be overflowing with kindness, but he sees that kindness as weakness and tries to appear cold. It’s difficult; perhaps Salomon Damonette’s psychological problems are quite serious.” He said, “What Salomon Damonette needs is education, guidance on the right values. We must tell him that every life has value, including his own… I think this is something he has never learned, otherwise he wouldn’t be the way he is now.”
"What did you remember?" the director asked curiously. "Since you went to Salem, you've lost a lot of your memories of that place. The same goes for Agent Romanov; I still don't know anything about what happened there."
"I've seen him risk his life to achieve his goal, and it was terrifying. Even though he's on the side of humanity, that image always makes me uneasy."
“We need a plan.” Nick Fury rested his chin on his hand and sighed. “We can’t afford the consequences of a sorcerer committing evil. What if he uses incredibly wicked dark magic? I don’t trust Salomon’s teacher to restrain him forever, even though his teacher has lived for over a thousand years. We have plans to suppress Stark, we have plans to control Captain America, but we don’t have a plan to deal with a sorcerer. We need to speed things up. We must create a deterrent against him. If he goes astray, at least we’ll have the ability to retaliate—extradimensional beings are defenseless against heavy weaponry, and I believe that can also threaten a sorcerer, not to mention that we now have the Tesseract, and we’ve already witnessed its power. We’ve made some progress, and we’re finally a little safer, barring any unforeseen circumstances…”
"But I think Salomon Damonette can still be saved," Coulson said. "We can get him a therapist."
“I’ve already arranged this,” Nick Fury said mysteriously, winking. “Agent Romanov has already submitted her report on Salomon, and she mentioned what you’ve said—so I’ve arranged for a psychiatrist, and you’ll never guess who it is.”
