Chapter 299 The Bloodline Problem

Chapter 299 The Issue of Bloodlines (Second Update)

Damon looked rather dejected. He sat in a soft chair in his office at Santa Teresa Mental Hospital, with the nun who was supposed to leave now beside him. Anna, though she already knew about it, couldn't help but get angry when she saw Sister Gabriel Rossetti standing there.

"Why do you ordinary people keep trying to get involved in this?!" The Devil's Daughter crossed her arms and sat down on the sofa in the drawing room. "We found the place where the nurse died. The matter is resolved, but at a high price. My partner might even become a drooling idiot. Sister Rossetti, Dr. Hastings, do you see? You can't do anything, yet you want Damon to go out and exorcise some drunkards, gamblers, and scumbag parents. Do you see him as a tool to spread faith?"

“We consider him family, Anna,” Dr. Hastings said, his thick, moist lips moving. “Damon has been taking care of her lately, and she still hasn’t woken up. Shouldn’t you take some responsibility?”

Anna shrugged and looked away. "Why should I take responsibility for that woman?" She raised an eyebrow, her attitude nonchalant. This was her attitude towards Dr. Hastings, towards Damon, towards the nun, and also towards herself. "Do we have any fond memories left between us?"

"She loves you, Anna." Damon stood up, swaying and weak. During this time, he had been trying to exorcise his mother using old methods, because he felt Salomon hadn't done his job properly. Every day, after finishing his university teaching duties, he would go to Santa Teresa Asylum to stay by his mother's side, telling her, in her coma, about the good things of the past.

However, this had no effect whatsoever; his mother remained fast asleep, and no one knew whether her soul was still within her body. Yet, during this time, he also felt the warmth from Sister Gabriel Rossetti, something he rarely experienced.

Damon stood up, his eyes closed, clutching his forehead. He felt blurry, bright blue and yellow spots flashing in his vision. Dizziness pounded violently in his brain, making it almost impossible to think. He felt something gripping his head; headache and dizziness almost completely dominated his mind. Whispers from nowhere occasionally intruded into his thoughts. If the nun hadn't caught him in time, he might have fallen back into his chair. Anna, seeing Damon like this, was about to stand up when she remembered something. So she sat back down on the gray fabric sofa, resuming her usual indifference.

Damon sniffed—he couldn't feel whether he'd made the movement or not; pain and dizziness consumed all his attention, and his nose and lips felt numb. The symptoms were somewhat similar to a cold, but were actually the result of his overuse of magical energy. He was still human and had very little magical power at his disposal. Dr. Hastings had had doctors diagnose his condition, and he'd received several injections, but to no avail; he only felt better after stopping exorcisms.

"Perhaps you have something to say to her," Damon said to his sister, his eyes half-open. "You know, she loves you."

"It's not me, and don't mention her to me." Anna took a piece of parchment covered in tiny writing from her handbag. "My purpose here isn't her, it's you. I want you to sign this contract, yes, it's him. Don't try to argue, we all know what the consequences of arguing are. The fact that he could expel that thing you can't control speaks for itself."

"Where is he?"

"Who knows?" Anna shrugged. "He should be busy with his own things, otherwise he wouldn't have come all the way from the East Coast to the West Coast. Hurry up and sign it, Damon. It's a standard contract, there's no downside to signing it. I don't want you dead."

"You're working for him now?" Damon took the contract from the nun and glanced at it. He slumped back into the armchair, ready to pick up his pen and write his name on the contract. But the nun stopped him, and Damon complied—the contract was written in Latin, and Sister Rossetti had a perfect score in Latin and Ancient Greek.

"I thought you were still in your antique business." Damon put down his pen and looked up at his sister.

"I didn't work for Salomon Damonette; it was just a collaboration. I discovered the devil, and then he destroyed him. Although it only happened once, his actions... you might even believe that the god you worship is him."

"Whatever, don't say things like that here." Damon held up the parchment. "Tell him that if he wants me to sign this contract, then our mother..."

Anna tilted her head back and let out a long breath. She had never understood why her brother was so naive and foolish, so unable to see the bigger picture. "You have no bargaining chips, Damon." The Demoness closed her eyes; she felt a throbbing pain in her eyelids. Dealing with Damon was always exhausting, not to mention Dr. Hastings was there too—the person Anna hated most. She advised in an extremely helpless tone, "He pointed a large-caliber pistol at me before I even signed the contract. Do you think he'd show you any mercy? Listen, I know Salomon. He's extremely controlling when it comes to demons..."

"He can't kill someone here," Dr. Hastings suddenly said. "There are cameras everywhere."

“Do you think he’d care about cameras? He can create an alibi with a hundred percent!” Anna rolled her eyes at Dr. Hastings. “He wants to kill me, I’ve always known that, and he wants to kill you too. The only reason he hasn’t done it yet is because he wants to use us against that devil, because the devil’s blood in us belongs to that devil. He sees us as tools; he’ll abandon personal feelings for his duty… let alone this nun.” She glanced at the somewhat nervous Gabriel Rossetti. “I think he’ll just throw this girl back to the Vatican.”

"He can't! I won't allow this to happen!" Damon became agitated, waving his fists and his nostrils flaring rapidly, like a bull sitting in a chair, ready to attack an imaginary enemy at any moment. If he were wearing glasses, the lenses would be fogged up by now.

"Our mother...you see, she can't speak now, she can't eat, her soul is almost gone! And she just keeps binding us with contract after contract..." As Damon's tone rose, the temperature in the air also rose, a slight increase that was barely perceptible, only Dr. Hastings kept staring at the thermometer and hygrometer that had recently been placed on the table.

Dr. Hastings was worried that Damon would repeat the previous disastrous incident—when Damon was performing an exorcism on his mother, he suddenly became agitated and his eyes were blazing with fire. It was the nuns who calmed him down. This was also why Dr. Hastings wanted the nuns to stay, as they could restrain Damon's behavior.

"So you're going to blame the person who helped you? Wake up, Damon. Nobody owes you anything. Salomon only helped because I agreed to his terms! You gave less than me, Damon, you have no right to comment. Besides, Salomon did his best. Do you really think that body still has her soul? When are you going to abandon your childhood and face reality?"

"The reason I'm angry is his arrogance towards us..."

"But he does have that power... I'm prepared to accept my nature, Damon. Whether you like it or not, I'm going to find that thing and take revenge."

My temperature is 38.5 degrees Celsius. I'll take a sick day tomorrow.
