Chapter 772 Suspicion Spreads
Chapter 772 Suspicion Spreads (Second Update)
Leopold Fitz's lead was crucial, especially given the Immortal City's restrictions on information transmission; this single lead was invaluable. According to Fitz, if Barbara hadn't called him back immediately, he likely would have followed this lead further. Daisy wore a black burqa over her agent bodysuit, attempting to disguise herself as a local woman to infiltrate the mission location.
However, Morocco is a Sunni country, and the burqa is traditional attire for Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula. Her actions only drew attention. Unsurprisingly, she was stopped when she tried to enter the house; two men grabbed her arms, while others pulled back the burqa to search for weapons. Daisy gritted her teeth, suppressing the urge to resist.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to see Joseph Haddad." Daisy watched as her combination lock briefcase was taken away and examined. When the man examining her asked what it was, she replied, "This is my deal with Haddad. I'm sure he wants what's in this briefcase."
"Tell me the password, and I'll decide whether he wants to see you or not," said a man with long, curly black hair and a gray beard. "I advise you to obey, woman."
“I advise you to follow our transaction procedures; I have an appointment.” Daisy shook her head. She knew these people were unlikely to agree with her. “Only I can open this box, and your boss will want what’s inside anyway,” she said softly. “This is your last chance. Give me back the box, or you’ll be in trouble.”
"How?" the man asked with a smile. "You don't have any weapons."
"See!" Daisy Jensen kicked the long-haired man in the stomach, then yanked free, punching each of the two men who had grabbed her arms in the face. Following Professor Melinda May's fighting techniques, Daisy expertly elbowed both men in the back of the head, knocking them to the ground. As the long-haired man got up and tried to reach for his gun, Daisy extended her hand, the powerful impact sending him flying, crashing heavily into the wall at the other end of the alley.
She picked up the briefcase that had fallen to the ground and then kicked one of the guys who was trying to get up in the chin.
"Phew! That's relaxing! Look, isn't this a weapon?" Daisy Jensen shrugged, picking up the guys' pistols. She could finally vent the frustration she'd accumulated at the base; her superpowers were utterly ineffective against magic. She still couldn't understand why those in power armor could ignore her shockwaves. "I'm really not cut out for infiltration missions, May," she said, pressing her headset. "We have to change plans, Plan B!"
“There’s no Plan B, Skye.” Melinda May’s voice was full of amusement. Daisy’s methods were exactly the same as hers in her youth, something Coulson had often nagged her about back then. “I’m above you now, monitoring Joseph Haddad. Capture him before they find us. I’ll provide fire support if necessary, to prevent them from escaping the house. We must get the artifact’s whereabouts from him!”
"receive!"
"Should we send someone to follow up, my lord?" Stephanie asked. "My father couldn't explain where that boulder came from either, and we have no idea what S.H.I.E.L.D. will get from Tangier."
"No need, let them check." After the inspection, Salomon put on the suit Stephanie had prepared for him. In Stephanie's own room, there was a wardrobe specially prepared for him, filled with her custom-made suits, each one fitting perfectly. He pretended not to see Stephanie's satisfied look, because even his underwear was chosen by Stephanie.
"I plan to go see Coulson now."
Mike didn't stop Salomon and Stephanie from requesting a visit, but for safety reasons, they still needed someone to accompany them. Stephanie and Barbara followed Salomon into the S.H.I.E.L.D. ward. Upon seeing Salomon enter, Agent Coulson forced a smile, though his pale face certainly didn't look good. "I heard I had an enhanced bio-organ implanted," he said. "With this arm, will I become a robot in the future?"
"You're still far from it, old friend. I suggest you take an alchemical potion; it will make you recover quickly."
Thank you for your suggestion. It was just an accident, please don't blame anyone.
"certainly."
“There’s something else,” Coulson said, glancing at Barbara outside the ward. Barbara Morse winked at him—Mike, Barbara, and Coulson had already devised a plan when Salomon submitted his visitation request. Salomon was only allowed into the ward after the plan was finalized. Agent Coulson, understanding the unspoken message, said, “I heard Simmons and Fitz were rescued?”
“Yes, they are still undergoing quarantine procedures.” The arcane mage turned his head, glancing at Barbara out of the corner of his eye. Listening to the surface thoughts of ordinary people was not difficult for him; even without using magic, his mental powers could detect parts of their thoughts. “Perhaps you’ve heard more, Coulson. Simmons brought back an astronaut who, according to our investigation, has lived on that planet for many years. We cannot be certain whether the NASA astronaut suffered from a deep infection, and Simmons, who spent some time with her, cannot rule out suspicion. Therefore, they must undergo a long period of quarantine and examination.”
"I understand, I understand," Agent Coulson nodded. "But I hope this work is done as soon as possible, because S.H.I.E.L.D. still needs Simmons and Fitz."
"They'll be released as long as the test results show they're not infected," Salomon said with a smile. "Don't worry, even if they are infected, our scientists have a way to deal with it."
"Really?"
"Of course it's fake. I only said that to comfort you." The sorcerer's expression remained unchanged. He was certain Barbara Morse had heard him; in the heat of intense emotion, ordinary people couldn't control their thoughts. Unless they severed their minds like Natasha Romanoff, certain crucial events could easily surface in the ocean of thought, then be easily scooped up by spellcasters like Salomon.
"If someone is confirmed to be infected, then the most extreme cleanup measures must be taken."
"What cleanup measures?" Coulson asked, puzzled.
"Burn."
"He's going to burn us alive?" Leopold Fitz slammed his fist on the tempered glass. However, the thick tempered glass didn't even tremble; Fitz's anger seemed to sink without a trace. He looked at Mike, who had come to the isolation ward to exchange information, "And Gemma, and that Will! I admit I don't really like Will, but..."
"We won't let them burn you alive, little monkeys," Mike sighed. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s reach was now at its limit. The agents liaising with the Avengers and providing Hydra intelligence couldn't be redeployed, Melinda May and Daisy were still investigating that lead, Gemma and Fitz were in quarantine, and even Hunter was on a classified mission. "But you must undergo quarantine first. Even if you get infected, we'll find a solution. Don't worry, everything will be alright."
"I think Tangier's lead is crucial, Mike." Fitz glanced at the security camera in the isolation ward. "I hope Daisy and May can speed things up; that lead will solve the mystery for us."
"I'll pass it on to them," Mike said meaningfully.
