Chapter 797 This Isn't Over (First Update)
As the thick steam gradually dissipated, Salomon used the tip of his sword to pick up the golden ring that had fallen to the ground.
This was the angel's halo, representing the angel's rank and essence. Unless the witch summoned beings from lower dimensions to devour the angel, or handed the halo over to the fallen angel craftsman Rodan, simply leaving it there and throwing it back would soon result in the rebirth of a mid-level angel. Whether that angel would still be so ugly then was unknown, since it was merely a spiritual being, its appearance entirely at the whim of the angel. Salomon activated the power of the Holy Sword; the scorching blade sliced through the halo as easily as cutting butter, completely annihilating the mid-level angel's soul. This was the power of the Holy Sword, utterly erasing the essence of extradimensional beings; any demon or monster would weep bitterly beneath its blade.
He overestimated the angel's combat capabilities; it wouldn't take thirty seconds. At that moment, the subway train had just pulled out of the Williamsburg Bridge, and the witches were beckoning to the lower-ranking angels rushing towards them. Joan of Arc had no time to concern herself with Salomon's act of stealing her prey.
"Constantine, Catherine, Aura. Report the situation."
"I think the lower-ranking angels in Hell's Kitchen, Greenwich Village, and SoHo are no longer a problem, my lord," Catherine said cheerfully. In fact, due to the low enemy density, the heavy firepower teams often dealt with the situation before the Sisterhood even engaged. Bombs and plasma attacks were far beyond the ceramic shells of those lower-ranking angels' bodies to withstand. Even if any escaped, both longswords crackling with electricity and chainsaws could easily slice through the flesh of the lower-ranking angels.
Catherine protested vehemently to Aura, demanding that the heavy firepower team leave her some prey, otherwise her assault squad would be bored to death. Undoubtedly, Catherine was very satisfied with the battle; although it was also a "search and destroy" order, this battle was far more enjoyable than the mission on the alien planet where the Hive was located. Catherine excitedly waved her arms towards the rooftop of another building.
In response, Aura made a gesture that meant "leave me alone".
"There are no mid-level angels here, and the situation in the Triangle is still unclear. End of report," Aura added calmly. Her voice was almost drowned out by the gunfire, as her heavy fire team continued to fire into the sky, killing the lower-level angels swooping down to attack them. Explosive shells were far more effective than regular bullets; just a few shots were enough to take down a lower-level angel, but ammunition was a problem for the heavy fire team. "Use plasma weapons more," Aura, wearing the crown given to her by Salomon, told her squad. "Execute sniping and interception orders, and let the assault team's dogs do the work."
"With Ms. Maximov's help, I'm hunting down mid-level angels quite successfully." Constantine reeked of ozone and the smell of burning fuel. He nodded to the witch. "Ms. Maximov is doing a great job; there are very few mid-level angels left in Times Square. If she could, Ms. Maximov wouldn't mind supporting the Sorority."
"Anything else?"
"According to the report from the Kamar-Taj New York Sanctum, the serpentine high angel is still hovering at an altitude of about 5000 feet above Manhattan." Hearing Constantine's words, Salomon looked up at the sky. He could vaguely sense the angel's movements, but not with the precision of the Agamotto crystal ball, because the echoing screams, like the cries of a baby, were so numerous and indistinguishable. He could only judge the number, not the distance. "I think it might want to create a stalemate with you, my lord. It fears your attack, after all, you killed that Cherubim with a single blow. What do you intend to do?"
"Have Stephanie donate to the NYPD, tell them where they need to maintain order, and set up a foundation to aid the disaster victims. I'll go find that big guy and solve the problem once and for all." Salomon hung up after giving the order. He sent an encrypted magical message in the direction of the two witches; although it was only twenty-five words, it was enough to express his thoughts. Sure enough, after receiving the message, Jeanne fired two shots in Salomon's direction without flinching. Although it was unclear why her marksmanship was still so accurate even at such a distance, the two bullets still drew a precise whistling sound before weakly hitting the sorceress's helmet, without even scratching off a speck of paint.
A purple light flashed in the direction the subway disappeared, and a giant fist woven from hair disappeared in a flash. It seemed the witches had drawn their melee weapons and were ready to wreak havoc. Salomon shrugged, opened a portal based on the angel's location sent by Constantine, and stepped inside.
He's about to get serious.
"Nobody knows if this is a terrorist attack or an accident?" Detective Carter returned to the passenger seat and slammed the door shut in exasperation. She had asked the patrol officers, but she knew she wouldn't get an answer, because such sudden incidents were common from Manhattan all the way to Williamsburg, from low-rise to high-rise buildings. It certainly wasn't a gas explosion, and it certainly wasn't an electrical accident. Officer Carter turned to her partner, Detective Fusco. "And you, stop eating!" she yelled. "No injuries, no suspects, how are we supposed to work?"
"Maybe you should stop and have some donuts." Detective Fusco, who might have Italian ancestry, licked his fingers, completely ignoring his partner's rage. Ever since he became Detective Carter's partner, he'd had to endure Carter's demanding nature from time to time; it was all too familiar. Like a husband ordered to wash the dishes, he'd initially do his part, but eventually become utterly lazy, believing the dishwasher to be the greatest invention in the world.
The dishwasher is indeed the greatest invention in the world, at least that's what Detective Frosco thinks.
"Do you think Iron Man or Captain America are going to just jump in front of us and take over everything?" Officer Carter slammed his fist on the steering wheel in anger. "Manhattan is a battlefield! And some idiots are claiming to have seen angels and then taking to the streets with guns! I don't care about the Avengers, this is New York, and we're the police! If we don't get the situation straight and can't arrest the suspects, things are going to escalate to a lot of casualties. What did they say at the airport? Can we ask the pilots?"
"Those two pilots just said the plane was out of control; investigating the black box isn't our job. If you ask me, we should contact the Avengers right now. Remember what happened in New York? I think it was definitely an alien invasion, the invisible kind. Or maybe time travelers," Detective Fusco said. "Anyway, only the National Guard and the Avengers can handle these kinds of things; we have no chance. Have something to eat; this might be the last donut. That shop is buried in the rubble."
Officer Carter glanced at the last remaining frosted chocolate donut in the box, picked it up, and took a hateful bite.
"The 911 call has been handled by the patrol officers, and headquarters has asked us to go help. There are quite a few armed men today, so we need to put on some body armor," Detective Fusco said. "The chief has already contacted the Avengers and the National Guard; now we'll see who arrives first."
"This isn't over, Fosco," she mumbled. "This isn't over!"
