Chapter 816 Besieged on All Sides
Chapter 816 Besieged on All Sides (Second Update)
Catherine was the first to leap down, her longsword crackling with electricity effortlessly slicing through the angel's wings. Though they too possessed wings, the artificial steel wings granted the androids immense strength and astonishing mobility. The androids brandished their weapons, leaping down one after another, the sounds of explosive gunfire and chainsaws echoing through the sky; their fury was enough to ignite the feathers of these extradimensional beings. As the most steadfast of the androids, Catherine's fighting stance was the most ferocious. The algebraic body's reaction speed and strength, amplified by force-feedback powered armor, made her appear like a crimson rose blooming on the battlefield.
Her current position wasn't earned through the monarch's favor, but through her swordsmanship and personality. Her swordsmanship and combat abilities were unparalleled within the entire Sisterhood, which allowed her to lead all the assault squads and handle most of the security tasks related to arcane mages before the Royal Guard was fully formed. Her combat prowess was on full display in this raid—she first smashed the shoulder of a centaur-like lower-ranking angel with the magazine of her ornately decorated explosive pistol, then, stepping onto its back, blasted a large hole in the angel's body with her explosive pistol. Holding her longsword upside down, she pierced the half-humanoid's body from top to bottom. Without even checking if the angel was dead, she moved on to her next target.
From encounter to attack, from attack to death, the entire process took only ten seconds.
Her power armor and steel wings were covered in blood; she truly lived up to her name as the "Battle Rose."
Meanwhile, the assault transport also changed its mission objective, shifting from offense to defense. Originally, according to Catherine's orders from the chain of command, the assault transport's mission was to break through the Angelic array, drop the Sisterhood near the Monarch, and then provide fire support to aid the besieged Monarch. However, higher-level orders required the assault transport to prioritize the safety of the homunculus. Catherine cursed under her breath—this was an order from the Monarch. She knew how much the Monarch cared about the lives of the homunculus, because in ordinary conversations, he always referred to them as "my daughters." But their role was to fight and sacrifice; fighting to the death was the only reward they could offer.
The witch's movements during battle resembled a dance, with guns fired continuously from her hands and feet, repelling all the angels that tried to approach.
Those were just lower-ranking angels; all the higher-ranking angels who had surged from the direction of the Falls Church had been killed by Salomon. The arcane mage had now set her sights on the mid-ranking angels. With the help of the assault transport ships and the Sisterhood, Bayonetta's pressure was greatly reduced. She even had time to slowly toy with her targets, killing them bit by bit, like a cruel cat playing with its prey.
"My lord, I cannot allow you to go to the holy mountain."
Even with Salomon's formidable combat abilities, he couldn't completely hold back every angel flying towards Bayonetta, especially those descending from the summit of Mount Finnbowent. Even though he managed to kill a few remotely with his magic, the majority of the mid-level and high-level angels still entered the witch's attack range.
The angels began to wreak havoc on the Bridge to Heaven, smashing the pavement and breaking its pillars. Faced with the power and weapons of the mid-level and high-level angels, the bridge, constructed of stone bricks and boulders, was sliced apart like cotton candy. The witch and the boy watched helplessly as the highest point of the Bridge to Heaven collapsed into fragments, and then beneath their feet. Bayonetta, chin held high, slammed her high heels on the pedals, and the motorcycle immediately veered off course, hurtling towards the waterfall church.
"What do we do now?!" The collapse started from the highest point and continued downwards. The boy stared in horror as the bridge behind him crumbled. At its most dangerous moment, the falling debris was only inches from the motorcycle tires, and the motorcycle was in imminent danger of plunging into the canyon. However, this wasn't the only danger he and the witch faced. The motorcycle's speed was indeed enough to carry them away from the collapsed bridge, but it also meant they were getting closer and closer to the horde of angels ahead. And behind them, a high-ranking cherub wielding a giant sword hurled a massive blade carved with a marble face at them. If Bayonetta hadn't skillfully maneuvered the bridge with her heel, he would have been sliced in two like the bridge itself.
He threw back a few cards imbued with his power, but such an attack was less than effective, for there were simply too many angels. The mastermind seemed determined to wager all available power to prevent him from reaching Finnbowent. The boy squinted and shouted against the howling wind, "We must get to Finnbowent!"
"I know, you little thing!" Bayonetta frowned and fired a few shots.
Some of the higher angels bypassed her and the boy, rushing straight ahead, and the witch immediately understood their intentions.
The angels began to destroy the Heavenly Bridge leading to the Waterfall Church. Even though she summoned Lady Butterfly, and even though Lady Butterfly could kill a lower or mid-level angel with a single punch, the witch couldn't stop them. They relentlessly paved the short bridge with their blood and flesh, only to be crushed by heavy motorcycles weighing nearly a ton. If it weren't for the strong traction of the tires, the motorcycles might have even slipped due to the angels' still-wet, evaporating blood. Even from an adversarial standpoint, the witch had to admire the fighting spirit of these creatures.
"Maybe it's just plain stupidity," Bayonetta added. She sent a magical message to the sorcerer still surrounded by angels, and seconds later, the assault transport, which had been greeting the angels with bombs, cannons, and forward armor, changed direction and flew towards the witch. Two twin-mounted bomb cannons on both sides of the aircraft, along with plasma weapons on the attack wings, swept across the Bridge of Heaven, easily wiping out most of the angels in the direction of Mount Finnbowent. Two assault team members in power armor stood on the wings, using their guns and swords to eliminate any enemies attempting to breach the assault transport's titanium alloy armor plates and ablative armor.
"What are you saying?" the boy shouted. He wanted to end this quickly. Although the climate in Noahtun was warm, it was winter after all, and his sleeveless sweatshirt was not warm at all; his hands and feet were freezing cold from the ride. He felt that if it weren't for the little bit of heat provided by the motorcycle's exhaust pipe, he would have fallen off the bike long ago because his hands and feet were so numb.
"It's nothing." Bayonetta pushed up her glasses with the hot muzzle of the gun. "Can you ride a motorcycle?"
"What?" A bad feeling crept into the boy's heart. Before he could answer, he saw Bayonetta pull out two long swords and leap off the front of the motorcycle. A cluster of dark purple wings unfurled from her back, propelling her towards the nearest angel. "Shit!" The boy quickly scrambled onto the motorcycle, gripping the handlebars. But due to his height, he couldn't reach the clutch or brake pedals. Without the witch's magical control, the motorcycle began to veer out of control. "Damn it! Damn it! Why is everyone so unreliable!"
The boy dared not release the accelerator immediately; he had no memory of how to operate a human vehicle. If the motorcycle hadn't been slowing down, he would surely have crashed to the ground. He was just about to breathe a sigh of relief, thankful he had finally stabilized the vehicle, but before he could even rejoice in his success, a violent jolt struck. The boy felt himself being thrown into the air before crashing heavily to the ground. The pain in his back and the back of his head almost made him faint; the pain even made him forget to breathe. His mind went blank; he couldn't understand what had happened, nor did he know where he was.
Until he saw the golden spear that had pierced the motorcycle through, and the white-robed man standing next to the burning motorcycle, amidst the thick smoke from the fuel.
