Chapter 817 The Sage's Identity

Chapter 817 The Sage's Identity (First Update)

The pain radiating from his back through his chest almost robbed the boy of his ability to think; he felt as if his spine was about to shatter. Without even looking down, he knew his shoulders and arms were a bloody mess; under the immense acceleration, the rough stone bricks would have transformed into sharp paring knives. Until he saw the white figure wearing the golden mask, until that figure walked right up to him.

"Looking at this face, what comes to mind?" The man removed his mask, his voice chilling. The boy merely gave a bitter laugh; the stinging pain in his arms and back nearly overwhelmed him. Even after finally catching his breath, he wasn't fully recovered from the excruciating pain that had nearly made him faint. Even knowing the man before him was capable of killing him, even knowing he couldn't resist, the boy maintained his usual nonchalant attitude.

"To be honest, man, why do you wear such an ugly mask?" the boy sighed.

His clothes were stained not only with his own blood, but also with the angel's scalding blood, which covered the bridge to heaven. Unexpectedly, as the angel's blood gradually evaporated, the boy felt the pain in his back lessen. Although he didn't know why, he instinctively shrank back, hoping to alleviate the physical pain.

"No matter how you deny it, you will have to pay for your sins." The man indifferently put his mask back on. He reached behind him, and the golden spear that had pierced the armored motorcycle appeared in his hand. The man pointed the spear tip at the boy's throat, and even though the boy couldn't see his expression, he felt a chill run down his spine. He could feel the man's cold hatred, but he had no idea why. "No matter what, you can't escape. Even if you've come to this era."

"What are you talking about, buddy?" the boy scoffed. "Were you high on drugs at the party?"

"Little thing!" Bayonetta, who had been keeping a close eye on the situation below, naturally noticed the boy's predicament. A giant hand with bluish-purple skin reached out from the portal, swatting away the angels surrounding the witch. Immediately afterward, Lady Butterfly emerged halfway out of the portal and suddenly threw a punch at the masked sage below.

However, an equally enormous fist appeared out of nowhere, shoving away Madame Butterfly's outstretched hand towards the Sage. The violent collision exploded in the air with a deafening roar, and the boy instinctively covered his ears. The female demon grumbled in displeasure, then turned her gaze to the obstruction—a four-elemental angel of wind, Temperance. The moment it fully emerged from the summoning circle, the tubular ends of its deformed, enormous limbs unleashed a torrent of wind, so powerful that it even blew the falling wreckage of the Bridge of Heaven into the sky, and knocked aside smaller objects, including androids and assault transport ships. Temperance's comical little head was embedded in the center of its figure-eight-shaped chest, its lifeless eyes fixed on Madame Butterfly.

It said something in a deep, almost inaudible voice.

Madame Butterfly laughed and accepted the challenge.

"Always making things difficult for children will make women look down on you." The witch stood in front of the boy, pointing her gun at the masked sage. "Although I don't know why you're doing this, it's not the right time yet. No woman likes a man who's too eager."

"This is your last warning. This has nothing to do with you." The masked sage's voice was like a volcano about to erupt from the earth. "Get out of my way, witch. Or I'll kill you too. No one can stop me!"

"Sorry, this little guy is still useful to me," Bayonetta said with a smile. "He can't die yet."

The witch and the sage possessed the same magic and fighting style, making them evenly matched. However, a constant stream of angels continued to pour forth from the summoning circle. Bayonetta's summoned Lady Butterfly, while dealing with the Angel of Temperance, also had to eliminate other higher-ranking angels. Even with her immense power, the sheer number of angels was a constant source of annoyance. While Lady Butterfly and the Angel of Temperance clashed in the sky, a battle also raged on the Bridge of Heaven, just as it had in the town of Noah'dorn. Only this time, the battle took place on the constantly collapsing bridge surface; earthquake resistance had never been considered when the Bridge of Heaven was built. When Lady Butterfly swung the Angel of Temperance and slammed it against the remaining piers, the Bridge of Heaven inevitably trembled. Without the angels needing to intervene, it collapsed again.

Bayonetta leaped upwards, her dark purple wings unfurling once more. Grabbing the boy by the collar, she soared from the crumbling Bridge of Heaven. Faced with the masked sage's spear, she was powerless to retaliate, only able to parry with her longsword. The assault transport ships and androids had been blown far away by the gale whipped up by the Angel of Temperance and were temporarily unable to arrive. The higher angels had also surrounded the arcane mage; no one could help her.

"You!" Bayonetta's longsword sliced open a corner of the mask. The masked sage had the exact same gray eyes as her, but what caught her eye was the object that had accidentally fallen from the sage's white robes and was being carefully protected by the masked sage on his chest. It was a delicate brass tube, and the witch was quite certain she recognized it.

After barely managing to hold out for a few rounds, Bayonetta plummeted from the collapsing bridge as if struck by a heavy hammer; her outstretched wings were utterly ineffective against the momentum of the sage's attack. At the same time, the boy was not spared, being pulled down with her. As the witch fell, the spell maintaining Madame Butterfly's summoning power gradually weakened. Although the Angel of Temperance was covered in wounds, Madame Butterfly continued to disappear, gradually disintegrating into strands of black hair. The female demon roared in discontent, but could not stop the gradual dissipation; this was the binding force of the contract and the exclusivity of the plane, unless the witch paid for the next summoning with her own magic.

As the masked sage brandished his spear, commanding the angels to pursue, a golden comet, trailing a trail of dazzling light, traced a graceful arc across the sky before crashing down with tremendous force onto the remaining bridge rubble. Stone bricks shattered beneath his steel boots, and the air was distorted by the heat of the jet engines. A golden giant descended to earth, sword in hand, flames visible to the naked eye igniting around him. With technology as his wings and magic as his weapon, he was more like a god than the angels flying in the heavens.

Salomon launched his attack a second after landing.

Compared to Bayonetta's agile fighting style, the arcane mage crashed in like a train traveling at full speed. The masked sage, who had fought him before, immediately noticed the change in the arcane mage's condition. He discovered that Salomon's power had increased exponentially, and the blood-red visor of his golden eagle helmet was almost burned through by Salomon's furious gaze. Almost the entire space was filled with his presence; even angels as tall as mountains seemed tiny in his presence.

He became silent and cold. The masked sage instinctively used the butt of his spear to block the incoming holy sword. The air screamed as the sword swung in his hand, but the brilliant blade burst into a blinding light, burning like a meteorite falling from the atmosphere to a planet, unleashing a torrent of heat. The spear was severed; the masked sage hadn't even had time to react.

The unprecedentedly massive impact sent the masked sage flying, plunging him off the Bridge of Heaven.

Salomon jumped down in silence.
