Chapter 10 A Twisted Fate

Lu Junhe stepped on the gas again and arrived at the entrance of the residential area.

The flashing lights of the police cars were blindingly bright in the darkness.

Almost all the lights in the building were on, except for the window on the right side of the third floor, which remained completely dark.

Lu Junhe didn't know what he was feeling when he went up to the third floor. When he pushed open the slightly ajar door and saw the mess on the floor, his heart felt as if it had been stabbed.

There was also a cell phone on the ground with its screen completely shattered.

He stopped a policeman walking past him, his Adam's apple bobbing: "How is the injured person?"

The police officer replied, "He's been stabbed in the abdomen; his condition isn't good."

A metallic taste of blood rose in Lu Junhe's throat.

He didn't even dare to continue thinking about what those words meant.

The police officer spoke again, "The other one wasn't much better."

Lu Junhe was taken aback.

What? There's another one?

The police explained that it was the injuries sustained by the two thieves.

Lu Junhe, usually calm and composed, was now somewhat agitated. He frowned, "Then I..."

There was no suitable pronoun at the moment.

He asked again, "And what about the homeowner?"

The police pointed to the innermost balcony.

Lu Junhe slowly approached and first noticed a blood-stained coat lying on the ground.

The moonlight was enveloped by the smoke rising from Qu Yun's fingertips. Her long hair was loosely draped over her shoulders, with a few strands clinging to her neck, rising and falling gently with her breath.

Without her coat, she was only wearing a white tank top, which made her shoulders look straight and slender.

Perhaps hearing footsteps, Qu Yun turned around slightly, the cigarette between her fingers swaying gently.

The scarlet flames revealed tiny glimmers of light.

Lu Junhe looked closely and realized that the melody was trembling.

He took off his coat and draped it over Qu Yun's shoulders. She was so thin that the coat looked like it might fall off at any moment.

"Surprised?" Qu Yun said softly, "I met a not-so-good person abroad, so I learned Muay Thai. I never thought it would actually come in handy to save my life one day."

However, she was still very afraid of that person.

She was afraid of the man who almost actually raped her.

Even if you encounter her on a bustling street, she will instinctively hide in a public restroom, unable to even catch her breath.

No wonder the old folks always say, "Once bitten by a snake, twice shy."

Qu Yun didn't want to think about these things anymore. She took another drag of her cigarette and slowly exhaled after a long while.

Lu Junhe watched her practiced smoking movements, lowered his eyes, and said in a low voice, "It's not safe here, come stay at my place."

As soon as she finished speaking, Qu Yun laughed.

She laughed more and more exaggeratedly, as if she had heard the funniest joke in the world, her eyes sparkling with laughter.

Qu Yun carefully examined the man in front of her, her expression suddenly turning cold. "Those two thieves were after me. I searched their bags and found they hadn't stolen anything."

So she used a knife to interrogate one of them, pressing the tip of the knife against his stomach, asking who sent them, what their purpose was, and whether they had harmed a child in the hotel.

The thief refused to speak, instead lifting his back and slowly soaking the knife in her hand with his blood.

Qu Yun stubbed out her cigarette, her voice low: "Lu Junhe, do you think this has anything to do with you?"

The atmosphere became heavy and somber.

Qu Yun really couldn't understand what kind of mindset this man had when he invited her to stay at his home.

Isn't her life miserable enough?

Lu Junhe clenched his fist. "Could it be that you're overthinking it?"

He was unwilling to admit it.

Qu Yun appeared calm. "I don't think I've ever told you this before, but the day I had the car accident, it was your mother who called me out."

Lu Junhe's mother knew about Qu Yun's existence from the very beginning.

She thought her son was just playing around.

After all, there are quite a few men in the industry who keep female college students as mistresses; as long as they break it off after marriage, it's fine.

Even if it can't be broken, it's okay; there's always somewhere to hide it.

However, as time went by, one year, two years, three years, four years, Yan Suling found that her son was becoming more and more interested in Qu Yun, and even stopped taking contraceptive measures.

Could it be that the two of them are planning to get married?

She began to make things difficult for Qu Yun, even going so far as to call her parents to Beijing to humiliate her in an attempt to force her to leave.

On the day of the car accident, Qu Yun received a phone call. Yan Suling was having afternoon tea with several wealthy ladies nearby and asked her to pick up the cake she had ordered.

She said on the phone, "You don't need to tell Jun-hyuk about such a small thing, do you?"

Qu Yun nodded in agreement, naively thinking that this was a goodwill signal from Lu's mother. She also didn't want to see Lu Junhe suffering in the middle every time, so she drove out with her very inconvenient pregnant belly.

Qu Yun wanted to smoke again, but the cigarette pack was empty.

She could only scratch her head, her voice growing colder and colder: "After waking up from the car accident, my child was gone, and I didn't even get to see my father, who had been hiding his illness from me, one last time."

"Lu Junhe, you don't know, do you? I told my father that I really loved you back then. In order not to let your mother look down on my family, he didn't even want to tell me that he had late-stage pancreatic cancer."

He was afraid of being a burden to her.

Qu Yun woke up crying countless nights.

Why didn't she die in that car accident?

The one who truly deserves to die is that unfilial daughter!

The man in front of me lowered his head, and the moonlight was so dim that it was impossible to see his appearance clearly.

Qu Yun sighed softly.

Actually, she didn't say anything else.

Before the anesthesia took effect, the doctors and nurses in the operating room assumed she couldn't hear anymore and openly discussed, "Are those two people outside the patient's mother-in-law and husband?"

"The old woman kept insisting that if there was any danger, the child should be saved first, otherwise she would smash her head against the wall and die."

The doctor asked jokingly, "So, did the husband choose to save the mother or the child?"

"Choose to save the smaller one."

"His exact words were, 'That woman is dead, so be it.'"

Qu Yun's eyelids grew heavier and heavier until only one tear fell from the corner of her eye.

"Lu Junhe, actually I've never blamed you too much," Qu Yun said.

Motherhood is a truly terrifying thing.

If she really had a choice between two options where she could live or die, she would choose to save the child.

But... but the fact that the man she loved made this choice still broke her heart.

Upon hearing this, Lu Junhe slowly raised his head slightly.

His eyes even reddened.

After four years of being in love, Qu Yun had never seen this side of the man before.

Lu Junhe's lips parted slightly.

He clearly heard Qu Yun continue, "I'm just blaming myself too much."

"I was punished by heaven because I thought there were shortcuts in life."

Lu Junhe felt as if he were being burned by a raging fire.

He called out in a hoarse voice, "Yunyun."

Qu Yun had already taken off her suit jacket and thrown it on the ground.

Her eyes were cold and expressionless: "Don't call me by my name anymore."

"Have you forgotten that we're entangled together?"

"It's a tragic fate."
