In the name of the true god

Chapter 27: Three Paths

"Tell me," Edmund said, his attitude unchanged despite Jude's failure to offer any reward. "Perhaps I can help you think of a way."

Jude nodded slightly and recounted in detail how he reunited with his brother Connor, how he was followed after working in prison, and other related matters.

Upon hearing this, Edmund was the first to speculate about the identity of the mysterious follower: "The follower must be one of our own kind."

Since the murder of Priest Rodney, Jude had basically come to the same conclusion, but this did not mean that the mystery had been solved: "The question is, how did I become the target of other involved wizards and resonance sorcerers? If they were the fat wizard's companions, since they were capable of killing Priest Rodney, they should have made direct contact with me, instead of being secretive and leaving people confused..."

Edmund quickly added, "I'm afraid they're not the fat wizard's companions either."

Not the fat wizard's companion.

Jude was even more troubled.

Before the tracking appeared, the only "heretic" he had ever encountered was the fat wizard.

Besides him, which other wizard or resonance sorcerer would illogically target him, even going so far as to kill a priest and cause a bigger commotion?

etc--

The statement that "the fat wizard was the only heretic I came into contact with before I was being followed" may not be true!

For example, Edmund Ravenscrown.

Or perhaps you've inadvertently interacted with other wizards or resonators who are concealing their true identities, or simply attracted their attention?

If that's the case.

Based on the timing, the other party should be working in the capital's heavy prison!

"Edmund, I have a new idea," Jude said, his spirits lifting considerably. "Just as you infiltrated the South City prison disguised as a reporter, could there also be lurking sorcerers or resonance magicians in the Royal Capital's heavy prison?"

"That's possible, but... why would they be following you? Just because your brother Connor is a priest? Then what's their purpose in following you?" Edmund first affirmed this, then pointed out the logical flaw in this line of thought.

"Let me carefully review the existing clues..." Jude calmed down and reassessed the situation.

The fact that Priest Rodney had no gunshot wounds, yet was able to kill the priest without using firearms, suggests that the other party must also possess extraordinary abilities.

Given that the probability of priests killing each other is so low as to be negligible, the only possible identity of the follower is that of a "heretic".

In addition, the surveillance began on my first day of officially starting work at the prison, and in the past week, I have only come into contact with a large number of unfamiliar faces since I started working at the prison.

This should, to some extent, prove that the stalker came from the prison, or at least had direct contact with some people or individuals in the prison.

Finally, the other party was merely stalking him. Through the law of contact, it was discovered that the other party harbored hostility, but the hostility was not strong enough to warrant a decision to harm him. Otherwise, he would have died on day one instead of living to this day.

As for the death of the priest Rodney, it is highly likely that the tracker realized he had been exposed and, in order to protect himself, had no choice but to fight Rodney to the death.

heresy.

It is related to prisons.

He didn't intend to kill himself.

So, what Connor guessed was that the first and second-level guards might be worried about being replaced, so they deliberately hired someone to intimidate him and try to force him to leave the Royal Capital Heavy Prison... Could that be the truth?

Are the first and second-level guards of the Royal Capital Heavy Prison connected to "heresy"? Aren't they afraid that the church will find out and they'll be executed without a burial place?

Or perhaps... one of the first or second-level wardens is himself a "heretic"...

hiss……

Jude shared his latest findings with Edmund.

Edmund's lips curled into a slight smile: "That's actually a good thing."

"How so?"

"Why do you think our kind would hide in prison and be so wary of being replaced?" Edmund didn't answer directly, but instead asked a question in return.

This is not hard to imagine.

Jude quickly realized: "Like you, you want to save people?"

"Yes." Edmund paced back and forth, his legs stirring up the black mist that had settled on the ground with each step. "In a prison overseen by priests, risking one's life to climb to a higher position is only to gain greater authority so that, at the most opportune moment, one can rescue all the dozens of implicated wizards and resonance sorcerers imprisoned in the Heretic Ward of the Royal Capital's Heavy Prison. Your brother rose through the ranks to become a first-class warden in the prison through connections, and now that you've come to work there, it's natural that you've aroused their suspicion."

"The Royal Capital Heavy Prison has four Level One Wardens and eight Level Two Wardens. Excluding my brother, there are eleven people. And among these eleven, the one whose position is the least secure should be the one tracking me?" Jude's train of thought clicked, and he quickly narrowed down the scope of the mysterious tracker to a very considerable range.

Edmund did not answer.

With a considerable area already covered, even if Jude simply continues to probe using the law of contact, finding the other party is only a matter of time.

The next key point is—

"What do you want to do?" Edmund asked.

Pretend nothing happened?

Can I contribute my modest efforts?

To protect himself, he secretly exposed them?

Three choices, leading to three completely different directions.

If it were Edmund, he would certainly choose to cooperate without hesitation and work together to save people.

But Jude never considered this question.

He had only worked in the capital's heavy prison for three days when he witnessed how tight the security was.

save people?

Stop talking nonsense...

He might even get himself involved, dragging his brother Connor and sister-in-law Steele down with him...

Edmund noticed Jude's hesitation and offered a compromise: "...Since he's only worried about being replaced by you and doesn't really mean to harm you, my advice is not to push him into a corner."

"At first I was pretty sure they didn't intend to kill me, but after what happened with Rodney, it's really hard to say what their attitude is now..." As the person involved, Jude didn't dare to overestimate his safety without fully understanding the other party.

"Now that you have a priest protecting you, they shouldn't attack you again. Otherwise, the Church would definitely start a formal investigation focusing on you, narrowing down his scope based on the pros and cons," Edmund analyzed rationally. "But this can't go on like this; you have to resolve the underlying conflicts."

Jude wholeheartedly agreed.

For now, my fundamental purpose in further mastering the laws of contact and similarity, and in specifically working in prison, is to unravel the mysteries surrounding me, ultimately eliminate the danger, and live a peaceful and stable life.

Together with the "heretics" lurking in the prison, they risked their lives to rescue the other implicated wizards and resonance sorcerers, which truly went against their original intentions.

He could secretly report the other party and nip the danger in the bud, but he couldn't bring himself to do it.

Ultimately, Jude is only twenty-one years old, and without enough experience, it's difficult for him to possess the decisive and ruthless qualities required for action.

half an hour.

He made up his mind and said, "I'll try to find a way to contact them first."
