Demigod Mage in America
Chapter 13 Absorbing the Power of Faith
The office was brightly lit; since it wasn't Renn paying for it himself, he couldn't be bothered to skimp on the expenses.
A magic circle had been drawn on his desk, with different items placed in the five corners: four silver cups and a white bone mask.
"Please come in."
Ryan walked to the side and gestured for the dawdling Toby to come over.
"Boss, I want to know... does it hurt?"
"It doesn't hurt, and it only takes a very short time."
Seeing his nonchalant expression, Toby had no choice but to bite the bullet and walk over. After a whole day of interaction, he was convinced that even if he tried to back out now, he probably wouldn't have a chance to leave. So he took a deep breath and obediently walked over. After reaching the center of the magic circle, he lay down at Renn's prompting, his expression almost like that of someone going to their execution.
However, Renn did not rush to make a move, because the clock on the wall was still showing 11:59:30.
"Is there anything you'd like to say to your family?"
"I hope they won't go back to the tents, boss. You can definitely do it, right?"
"Um."
Looking at the nodding and smiling Ryan, Toby was about to return the smile when everything went black. In a mere instant, Ryan had stopped Toby's heart and killed him. Before he could even feel the pain, Ryan had severed all the nerves in his body, including his pain receptors.
Looking at the bloodless face, Renn slowly raised his hand, magic gathering at his fingertips in a dazzling array of colors. But just as he was about to act, his movements suddenly faltered. Originally, he intended to completely erase Toby's soul, so he wouldn't have to endure the loneliness and pain of death. But after witnessing Toby's interactions with his family today, Renn suddenly had another thought—perhaps, emotions aren't always a weakness.
Under his control, magic flowed into Toby's body. At the same time, golden light gradually emanated from his body, eventually condensing into a contract in the air. As if confirming something, when the light swept across Toby's body, the contract exploded and then reformed, becoming a dazzling ball of light.
The power of faith, and a high concentration of it.
"He's almost at the butler level already...?"
While believers are generally categorized as casual believers, superficial believers, and fanatical believers, there are still distinctions between them. For example, the highest level of a superficial believer is a deacon, and if a believer at this level becomes more devout, they can become a pastor for their respective God. No God would reject such a believer; this represents a level of shared faith.
Renn hadn't expected to receive such a substantial reward from his very first transaction. He had assumed it would be nothing more than low-quality faith, something to be used as a stepping stone for the divine kingdom. This level of faith power was already worthy of his absorption.
He glanced at the magic circle on the ground; it was a magic circle that concentrated the power of death, turning any creature inside into an undead. Rein had lived here for a week and three days, and he had witnessed firsthand the bodies of the homeless being carried away and disposed of. Dismemberment, burning—anything went. Rather than letting those people waste their lives, he'd rather use them as guards.
He shook his head and walked to his chair. Next, he would absorb the power of faith. This was the first time he had completely obtained a new mass of faith power; previously, the goddess of magic had always given it to him from her own divine realm.
The golden sphere shattered in his hand, turning into countless particles that drifted towards his heart. The first step to becoming a god: physical transformation. Demigods are half human, so anything mortal can harm them; the only reason they aren't easily damaged is due to insufficient damage output. Theoretically, Renn would still be injured, but if he truly completed the divine tempering, then no one except other gods could harm him in the slightest. Even if the opponent could completely destroy the world, as long as that weapon didn't possess divine power, it couldn't harm him. As gamers know, it's not the boss's tankiness that's scary, it's the boss's health bar being useless.
The golden light quickly dissipated, and Renn closed his eyes to sense it, a smile involuntarily appearing on his lips. He could now access his own authority! Although he was still weak, he had truly begun to grasp his own power. The rules within the agency were no longer just for show; from now on, he wouldn't need to introduce them to others. From the moment they stepped into the agency, all the rules would appear in their minds.
"It felt pretty good..."
There was a sense of exhilaration, like releasing pent-up anger after years of pent-up frustration. However, this method seemed a bit too slow. Raine began to ponder whether he had other, better ways to plunder faith. The undead creation process would take two days, so he prepared to go home and sleep. Instead of using magic, he pulled out an umbrella and strolled leisurely towards the door.
A flash of lightning illuminated the Guan Yu statue he had moved to the corner, which looked strangely eerie in the dim light. Raine hadn't figured out what to do with these antiques, so he simply decided to use them as decorations.
Meanwhile, at the intersection of 98th Street and Fifth Avenue, the torrential rain had just stopped, and the dark clouds drifted away, leaving behind only spent shell casings, corpses, and accumulated sewage. Katherine Field was surrounded by a swarm of reporters with their cameras and microphones. Overwhelmed by their questions, she could only stammer and give vague answers.
"Officer Field, how did you subdue the assailant? Who was the helpful citizen?"
"I...I grabbed a stone from the side and subdued him while he was reloading. The helpful citizen was a gentleman, and I didn't see his face clearly. He suddenly rushed out from the side and quickly knocked down the gunman. I was just cooperating with him to complete the arrest."
To others, Katherine Field's words sounded more like a lie. They believed it was highly likely that the mysterious man had taken down the gunman, and the lucky officer had simply taken the credit. After all, America has no shortage of such stories, has it?
Her superior, Sheriff Raymond, didn't look too pleased. This officer had been on the job for less than a year and had already solved two major cases. Didn't that make him, her superior, seem incompetent? Moreover, she completely lacked social skills; during the interview, she hadn't mentioned herself or the superintendent at all. Someone like that couldn't possibly go far in this line of work.
"No, no, I was really just assisting that helpful citizen in making the arrest; he was the main force..."
Bitch!
Raymond covered his mouth with his hand, his expression grim. He's already showing bad behavior right out of school, and he doesn't know what he's up to by relying on his looks.
"Sir, we found this next to the gunman."
A police officer came over carrying an evidence bag containing a small piece of fingernail.
"I'll send it for testing. I hope to get the results soon."
"receive!"
Having just finished dealing with the reporters, Catherine Field went to a secluded corner and squatted down, hugging her knees. She instinctively tugged at her collar, revealing her pale collarbone, but quickly had to pull it back down. She was soaked in sweat and radiating heat; pulling open her collar meant the wind would rush in, and the night wind was no joke. If it weren't for the thick, sturdy security uniform, she probably would have caught a cold.
Because of what happened, the bar was not going to be open tonight, so Catherine Fields was thinking about whether she should just go home.
"Achoo!"
No, she has to go home, otherwise it will be troublesome if she catches a cold.
At this moment, Ryan was naturally unaware of the consequences of his commotion on the young policewoman. He had already imposed restrictions; if she dared to reveal his presence, she could expect to lose her job.
