For a moment, he was convinced that he was seeing the illusion of the track breaking right before his eyes.
"Ah ah ah ah ah!"
Chapter 72 The Serpent of Midgard (Part 2)
As the roller coaster plunged down from its first highest point, Lu Mingfei felt as if his soul had been flung out of his body.
The feeling of being pushed back in your seat at 250 km/h is like someone pressing a steel plate on your chest, making breathing a task that requires your full effort.
Chu Zihang, sitting in the front row, had his muscles taut, and from Lu Mingfei's angle, you could see that his face had turned green.
"Aaaaaah!" screams echoed throughout the room.
Xia Mi stood in the front row, her hands raised high, her ponytail blowing straight in the wind. Principal Angers' silver hair flew in the wind.
The usually composed Frillie opened her eyes wide, revealing a surprised "wow" expression.
Are only he and Chu Zihang this bad?
"This is outrageous!" Lu Mingfei lamented inwardly.
The excessive speed distorted the view before me; the blue sky resembled an elongated piece of chewing gum, the white clouds were broken into cotton-like stripes, and a few birds froze in my field of vision, their wings unnaturally bent.
His sense of time became distorted, and in a daze, Lu Mingfei seemed to see his entire life fast-forwarding before his eyes:
The school playground where I was ostracized by my classmates in elementary school, the girl I had a crush on in junior high but didn't dare to confess to, and the things that happened at Kassel College.
All the images are bathed in a strange blue hue, like an old movie filter.
"Oh dear," a familiar voice could be clearly heard amidst the howling wind, "Brother, you have nine seconds left. If you don't summon me, you'll be in grave danger."
Lu Mingfei raised an eyebrow. In the previously empty seat to his right, Lu Mingze was casually crossing his legs, holding a strawberry ice cream in his hand and a silver spoon between his teeth.
"You, why are you eating ice cream?" Lu Mingfei's voice was carried away by the wind.
Lu Mingze easily scooped up a spoonful of ice cream and put it in his mouth, completely unconcerned that he was on a roller coaster traveling at 250 kilometers per hour.
“It’s absurd for any normal person to want to eat ice cream on a roller coaster,” he understood Lu Mingfei’s thoughts, “unless he can stop the roller coaster.”
"Snap," Lu Mingze snapped his fingers.
The world instantly lost its color, turning into a monotonous black and white. The sounds of wind, screams, and the friction of tracks all vanished, replaced by a deathly silence.
The roller coaster really stopped; no, to be more precise, time stood still.
Chu Zihang, sitting in the front row, leaned at a 45-degree angle, a bead of sweat freezing on his temple. Xia Mi's hair froze in that fleeting moment. Even the surprised expression on Frillie's face was frozen in place.
"Don't look around, you'll fall in, it's dangerous," Lu Mingze said casually, licking his spoon.
He shook the ice cream cup in his hand. "Want a bite? It's strawberry flavored, and it's really sweet."
Lu Mingfei swallowed hard, glanced down cautiously, and felt dizzy. They were suspended on the track, more than a hundred meters above the ground.
If the safety device fails at this moment, everyone will fall like dumplings being dropped into a pot.
"What... what are you planning to do now?" Lu Mingfei's voice trembled.
Lu Mingze shrugged and said in a lecturing tone, "According to statistics, the accident rate of roller coasters is about 1 in 1500 million, but it is by no means zero. There are examples, you know."
"Shut up!" Lu Mingfei's face turned green. "You're jinxing me!"
Lu Mingze shrugged, smiled dismissively, and pointed ahead to the tracks: "Look, see for yourself."
Lu Mingfei followed his slender finger and saw the second highest point ahead. The track was twisted and deformed, as if an invisible hand was twisting a rope.
Sparks flew from the weld, and the track was forcibly reversed by supernatural forces.
"This is impossible," Lu Mingfei murmured, cold sweat trickling down his back.
Lu Mingze sighed, put the last bite of ice cream into his mouth, and casually drew a flowery mustache on Xia Mi's face. "A quarter of my life, to solve everything."
A section of steel bar broke off from the twisted track and fell to the ground in slow motion.
"Oh dear, this isn't good, brother. Shall we make a deal?"
Lu Mingfei's lips trembled. The distorted tracks and the towering sky before him left him with no choice. He opened his mouth, about to say "good."
"Click." A slight disturbance occurred in the black and white world.
Angers' finger twitched, and then Frilian's eyelashes trembled slightly.
Color began to seep into the black and white world, and Lu Mingze's expression instantly darkened.
"Tsk, what a nuisance." He glanced at the world regaining its color and sighed regretfully, "We can't make a deal again this time."
The boy stood up. "I'll leave the work to Angers and Frilian."
"Wait! What should I do?"
Lu Mingze took a few steps forward.
“Don’t worry, brother,” he turned back with a sly smile, “you won’t die here, at least not today.”
As the last word fell, the boy's figure disappeared like a chalk drawing being erased.
The world regained its color, sound, smell, and touch.
"Mingfei! Xia Mi! Zihang! Frilian!" Principal Angers' roar cut through the wind.
The whole world suddenly became viscous. The wind disappeared, the screams of tourists stretched into strange tones, and even the sunlight seemed to freeze in the air.
"Principal, you've used up all your time?" Lu Mingfei blurted out, looking at Angers in the front row.
“The situation is worse than expected,” Angers said, drawing his folding knife.
Xia Mi tilted her head in confusion: "What? Are you guys talking about some kind of code?"
Her face was painted with several comical flowery mustaches, making her look like the product of a child's prank.
Lu Mingfei stared at Xia Mi's face, his heart sinking. The flowery mustache was Lu Mingze's handwriting.
The last time I saw him in my dream, he painted his face in the same way, but it didn't affect reality.
Does this mean that Lu Mingze has already begun to influence reality through dreams?
"How much time do we have left?" Chu Zihang's calm voice interrupted Lu Mingfei's thoughts.
Chu Zihang unbuckled his seatbelt, ready to act at any moment.
Angers quickly glanced ahead: "There are 6 seconds left before it completely breaks. In my Time Zero Domain, it can be slowed down by 50 times, so we have about 300 seconds left."
"Five minutes," Lu Mingfei thought, trying to figure out how to stop the roller coaster. "But zero time can't speed up ordinary humans. We have to do something, or all the ordinary people on this bus will die."
The roller coaster was still slowly climbing, bringing the broken track closer to them with every second.
Lu Mingfei could clearly see a mother and daughter hugging each other tightly in front of him. The mother's eyes were filled with fear, and the little girl was not even aware of what was happening.
Frillie began, “I read in the brochure for Six Flags that Midgard Serpent has an emergency braking system. When the roller coaster is at its highest point, the speed is close to zero, so if the brakes are activated at that time…”
“That would allow the roller coaster to go back in reverse,” Chu Zihang continued, “Theoretically, it’s feasible.”
Xia Mi shouted, "How do I trigger the brakes?"
“The roller coaster has its own transformer that converts low-voltage electricity into high-voltage electricity to trigger the brakes,” Angers handed the folding knife to Lu Mingfei. “But the switch is in the control room on the ground, and there’s no time to go down.”
Chu Zihang nodded. "My major is alchemical mechanics. By opening the cover of the roller coaster transformer, I can ignite the brakes in mid-air."
Angers made a quick decision: "Chu Zihang, Lu Mingfei, you two go and activate the brakes. Xia Mi, Frilian, if the brakes fail, at least save the lives of everyone in this car."
Chapter 73 The Serpent of Midgard (Part 2)
"Give me the folding knife," Chu Zihang said.
Lu Mingfei quickly handed over a folding knife, which Chu Zihang took and used to cut into the gap in the metal casing of the transformer.
This weapon from Angers exhibits astonishing sharpness, its metal casing sliced open like butter.
Chu Zihang's arm muscles were clearly visible under his clothes, with every tendon taut to the extreme.
"Hold it steady on this side," Chu Zihang said, staring at the transformer.
Lu Mingfei hurriedly used both hands to hold the deformed metal plate in place, feeling the vibrations coming from his palms—proof that the outside world was collapsing.
At normal flow rates, these vibrations should be loud enough to tear eardrums.
The transformer cover was completely opened, exposing the complex electrical system to the air. Lu Mingfei gasped; dozens of wires of different colors were tangled together—how could he possibly distinguish them?
"The blue one is the neutral wire, and the red one is the live wire." Chu Zihang's voice was frighteningly calm as he ran his fingers through the wires, separating two critical lines. "Just pick up these two wires and bump them together to activate the emergency brake."
A screw spun out from the broken track, and with the effect of time slowing down, it slowly swept past Lu Mingfei's eyes like a feather.
Lu Mingfei could even count the number of spirals on it.
"Don't touch those flying parts," Chu Zihang warned, his eyes still fixed on the circuitry. "At normal flow rates, they're moving at speeds comparable to bullets."
Lu Mingfei swallowed and nodded.
His gaze passed over Chu Zihang's shoulder and fell upon the passengers in the distant carriage, whose expressions were frozen in extreme terror.
A mother clutched her child tightly, her mouth agape, almost tearing open. A young man in the front row frantically tried to unbuckle his seatbelt. Further away, an elderly man prayed with his eyes closed, tears streaming down his wrinkled face.
"Lu Mingfei! Focus!" Chu Zihang's shout pulled him back to reality. "The brakes take two or three seconds to activate and must be operated when the roller coaster is close to its highest point."
"Understood." Lu Mingfei forced himself to concentrate. "I'll use Time Zero to seize that opportunity."
"Senior brothers, hurry, hurry, hurry!" Xia Mi's shout came from ahead.
Lu Mingfei looked up and saw the girl standing on the edge of the broken track, her long hair whipping wildly in the wind. "The principal can't hold on much longer!"
Following her gaze, Lu Mingfei saw Angers kneeling on one knee on the chair, blood seeping from his seven orifices.
Frillie knelt beside him and used healing magic, but the emerald green lights dimmed quickly upon contact with the headmaster.
“Time Zero is putting too much strain on his body,” Frilian said. “His mind and body are nearing their limits.”
Lu Mingfei felt a tightness in his chest. "Principal!" he shouted, "How about I maintain time zero for you?"
Angers slowly shook his head, a simple action that caused a trickle of blood to seep from the corner of his mouth again.
“No, your deceleration is only twenty times, that’s not enough,” he said, breathing heavily. “The brakes must be engaged when the roller coaster is almost at its highest point. If it’s too early, the brakes will lock up; if it’s too late, everything will be over.”
"Understood!" Lu Mingfei looked at Chu Zihang, "Senior brother, let's go!"
The two climbed onto the back of the car, each grabbing a wire. Due to the strong electromagnetic field, their hair stood on end comically, making them look like two Frankenstein's monsters.
