Reincarnated As A Chameleon And Eating Everything To Evolve

Chapter 131 - Questioning The Wolf's Aura Ability

'It works!'

With his newly created small aura knife on his right index finger, Matthew tried poking a blade of grass near his feet and the result was just as he expected.

The blade of grass was cut off cleanly when it was lightly touched by the small aura blade. Satisfied by the properly working aura blade, Matthew then continued to cut off the smaller part of the thick tree branch and now only leaving a single log of wood with a 2-meter long body and about 15cm in thickness.

'Alright, now let's hollow out the- Wait, I still need to cut the log in two, I almost forgot.'

'Now then, the real question is, will I be able to make an aura-blade without activating the wolf's aura ability first.'

Using the same method as creating the smaller aura blade, Matthew closed his eyes and tried to make the ordinary-sized aura hand-blade on his right hand without using the wolf aura ability first.

And the result was Matthew succeeded, yet he wasn't satisfied with it.

Not only the aura hand-blade was formed after about a full minute rather than 10 seconds, but the solid aura blade also looked thinner and glowed dimmer compared to the ordinary aura hand-blade that Matthew made when the wolf's aura ability is activated even though he only created one aura hand-blade on his right hand.

Matthew had tried to pour in more aura into his right hand, but it wasn't too effective as he only succeeded in making the aura blade as strong as the original aura hand blade with much effort of his willpower and focus.

And when he tried to make the same aura blade that he had just created before by combining two aura worth of aura hand-blades into one, he failed miserably even though he had used all of his focus. Instead of making the aura blade more solid, it instead caused the aura hand-blade to be unstable and made a lot of his aura leak out into the surroundings and become wasted.

'I guess this is good enough for now.'

Matthew then told the kids to lay down the log onto flat ground, free of tree roots or small mounds to make sure that he cut it in two properly.

Wanting to test out the strength of his aura hand-blade without the wolf's aura ability, Matthew decided to cut the log with it even though there's a high chance he would fail to cut the log in two.

However, Matthew didn't hesitate any longer this time since he already knew that he was capable of splitting the thick tree branch so smoothly if he wanted to and what he was doing now is only a little experiment to satisfy his curiosity.

But still, Matthew didn't do it half-heartedly and still made a proper stance with his body to generate the most strength he could to try and succeed in cutting the log in two.

Locking his eyes towards the thick log on the ground, Matthew powerfully brought down his aura hand-blade down towards the middle of the thick log.

At first, Matthew thought that the aura hand-blade would be able to succeed in cutting through the log just fine, but as the blade cut through deeper, he felt more and more resistance from the log, and finally, he felt his aura blade stop moving two-thirds of the way from cutting the log completely.

Matthew then released a small sigh of disappointment,

'As expected.'

But he quickly got back to his task and used the aura hand-blade like a saw and finally succeeded in cutting the log in two.

Then using 3 fingers instead of 1 to make a slightly larger small aura hand-blade, Matthew began hollowing out the now 1-meter long log, leaving only about 2cm thick for the walls of the water container to make it sturdy enough to be held.

Using the small hand blade to cut pieces of the log, Matthew created uneven surfaces everywhere inside the log and some small pieces of wood were left inside the log which would be somewhat dangerous for whoever's throat if they drank water from it.

Rinsing the log with water first a few times before using it could help, but some parts needed to be sanded with sandpaper. And of course, Matthew didn't have one nor did he know what the kobold had used to sand their wood before. In the end, Matthew improvised and used a thin aura gauntlet to cover his hand and just violently rubbed the insides of the hollowed-out log.

While he was doing the tedious task of rubbing the insides of the log, Matthew's mind wandered and he thought,

'I have wondered about this for quite a while now, but what is actually the ability of the wolf's aura ability? I've thought that it strengthened my overall physical strength, but after seeing other creatures using aura, I found out that strengthening physical strength is one of the base characteristics of aura and not the wolfs' special aura characteristics.'

'The boars extended their tusks, the deers layered their antlers with thick aura, while the bear could even launch aura blades from his paws. There's no way that the wolf's aura ability would be as simple as helping them control aura better right? It has helped a lot of times and I may not have been still alive if I didn't have the wolf's aura ability, but if I got good enough in controlling my aura then will the wolf's aura ability become less and less valuable?'

'I don't want to call it useless since it would be disrespectful to refer to the savior of my life as such and I don't believe that the wolf's aura ability was as simple as that.'

Rewinding the memories on his mind, Matthew tried to remember how the wolves originally used their aura ability.

He went back in time when he killed the pack of wolves, but after thinking about it he remembered that they didn't get the chance to use the aura ability before Matthew had killed all of them.

He then went back further in his memories and finally remembered a scene where the wolf pack was circling a group of boars.

The scene where the alpha wolf howled into the sky as the hazy white aura started to spread from the alpha wolves towards all the members of its pack.

"That's it!" Matthew exclaimed out loud which caused the kids to all turn to look at him.

"No, nothing, please don't mind me. Nothing to see here yet, I'm still working on these logs." Matthew quickly said.

'I should try spreading my aura to the kids to enhance their physical strength later. I hope it didn't have any limitations that made it only available to wolves. Well, the kobolds are half wolves so it should work, right? But if the limitation is that it could only be used for the members of the same species as the user, then does it mean I could only share my aura with other chameleons?'

'Wait a minute, am I even still considered a chameleon at this point?'

Checking his info tab, Matthew made sure that his race name is Chameleon Chimera.

'There's still the word chameleon in it so it means that I'm still one.' He sighed in relief.

'Well that's enough existential crisis, let's finish these water containers first.'

Repeating the same thing to the other piece of log, Matthew spent about 1 hour sitting there doing woodworking while the kids who had tried to observe Matthew and learn something from him had given up and played on the lakeside instead.

Seeing this, Matthew told the first kobold kid to make use of the magic staff that he is currently carrying on his hands and practice magic since they are near a body of water and if anything were to happen it won't be too disastrous for both themselves and the forest.

"Maybe it was tired from being used as a walking stick so much by your grandpa, I think it would be happier if it was being used to train the next kobold mage. And I'm sure your grandpa would not be any less happier than the staff itself if you do that." He said to the first kobold kid.

Which the first kobold kid had strangely complied without making any fuss, complaints, and he didn't even let out a small groan. He just silently stood by the lake and started to practice saying the magic chants which sounded pretty fluent in Matthew's ears although it wasn't as good and eloquent as when Mutt said it.

The first time the first kobold kid said the chants and succeeded in gathering red particles to create a small fire on top of his magic staff, Matthew stopped carving the log and just silently looked at the first kobold which resembled his grandpa slightly when he was using magic.

With the water container finished being built, Matthew told the kids to drink the lake water once again and fill the water containers since they would be moving away from the lake.

No Matter how they liked the lake, there's no place for them to stay and there's also no way Matthew's old nest would fit three kobolds and himself inside.

So Matthew planned to bring them to another place where there's already a minimum sufficient space for all 4 of them to rest inside and also not too far away from the lake and the other animals that they could hunt, which is the wolf nest.

The deers that wandered near the lake were mostly low-leveled as Matthew remembered them, and killing them won't help the kids to level up since they are already at level 9. And although there's also boars that came near the lake, Matthew had remembered that the boars that came had used their aura abilities which means that they were around level 15 which is too dangerous for the kids to fight when they are still not capable of defending themselves properly.

With Matthew carrying one of the water containers and the kids alternating between the three of them to carry the other one which is almost as tall as themselves, the four of them finally arrived at the former wolf's nest which is one of Matthew's homes and after putting the water container inside the nest, Matthew quickly drag the kids outside while saying,

"Let's get ourselves some dinner!"

"Don't you mean levels, brother?"

"You will die from hunger first and die from being low leveled later, so get your priorities straight!"

"Yes, brother!"
