Doomsday America

Chapter 20: Is the taste right?

Chapter 20: Is the taste right?
Seeing that her mother was awake, Winnie rushed forward and called out to her mother while clinging to the door.

"Mom, Edward is dead, but I'm still alive!"

"How could this be... God..."

Upon hearing the news of her beloved son's death, the woman sat up, grabbed her daughter's hand, and tears welled up in her eyes instantly.

“I shouldn’t have listened to your father, we shouldn’t have gone to Dallas for the celebration, we shouldn’t have started this trip, God, is this your punishment for me?!”

"How could this happen? Why did this have to happen? Oh my God, what should I do? I..."

"Uncle Red Hair!"

Just as the woman was crying incoherently, the little girl Winnie suddenly turned to Eugene, who looked impatient, and spoke seriously.

"Could you let my mom lie down quietly for a while, like that policeman did before?"

"What?"

Upon hearing Winnie's words, Eugene widened his eyes dramatically.

Winnie continued speaking to Eugene.

"I think it's better the way it is. I'm not the only one who thinks my mom is noisy, am I?"

"She's always like this, both at home and outside. I really admire my dad for being able to put up with her."

"So could you help her and let her get some rest?"

"Ha, you fucking... I like you, you little brat, ha ha!"

Upon hearing Winnie's words, Eugene laughed as he climbed the steps and reached out to grab the woman by the neck.

Then, he raised his head, glared at Madison, and said with a sneer.

"Did you hear that, you piece of shit? This is someone else's kid's request!"

Before the woman could even struggle after he finished speaking, Eugene suddenly exerted force and choked her unconscious.

After seducing the woman, Eugene jumped out of the RV with a smile and gave Winnie's head a good rub.

Gavin, watching the farce unfold, flicked his cigarette ash and then clapped his hands lightly.

pop... pop...

After drawing everyone's attention with the sound of slapping, Gavin spoke calmly.

"I'm glad to see more than one rational person here."

"But I may be too happy too soon, because new dangers await us."

“We don’t have time to waste here. Eugene will drive the Ford, Madison will drive the RV, and the kid will go take care of your mom. We have to go and take a look in the direction of Ennis!”

At this point, Gavin pulled a map out of his pocket to check the surrounding terrain one last time.

Then, Gavin pointed to the fork in the road outside Ennis on the map and spoke to everyone.

"If we get to the vicinity of the zombie horde before they block our way at the fork in the road, then we should immediately rush to the fork and cross Ennis Town!"

"And if they've already blocked the fork in the road, giving us no chance to take a detour."

At this point, Gavin pointed to the vicinity of Palmer, a town they had just passed, and continued.

"The roadsides in this area are mostly covered by dense forests that have been nurtured by the sea breeze from the east coast, and there are very few large open spaces for vehicles to pass through."

"Fortunately, there is probably still an undeveloped meadow on the site of Palmer Farm... which is the farm site preserved by Palmer Resort, that connects to the artificial viewing lake."

"If we can't get through Ennis, we'll turn around and head to the artificial lake to set up camp, waiting for the Ennis zombie horde to pass through Palmer, or we can simply lure them through the Palmer area at a faster pace!"

"It's settled then. Everyone get on the bus, let's go say hello to the zombies!"

As soon as he finished speaking, Gavin put away the map and walked straight toward the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Watching Gavin's retreating figure, Eugene stood there stunned for a moment before instinctively speaking.

"This is fucking too Natria... cough cough!"

At this point, Eugene noticed Madison looking at him, so he quickly changed his words and continued.

“I mean, it’s a bit undemocratic. I thought he would at least ask who was in favor and who was against it. Believe me, I didn’t mean anything by it.”

"Nothing else, just hurry up and pat the back of your old Ford, and pray it doesn't leave you and the little cop in the zombie horde to get fucked while we're running away, you bastard!"

Madison cursed, then beckoned to the little girl before carrying the unconscious woman to the RV's bed. After settling the woman in, Madison spoke to Winnie, who was getting into the RV, in the aisle.

“Take care of your mom, kid. When I was your age, I was already out on the streets of Chicago.”

"No problem, I can do it. If she wakes up, I'll do my best to get her back to sleep!"

Winnie quickly raised her little head and responded.

Upon hearing this, Madison's face froze, his expression darkening.

"Well, there's no need to be so strict. Just don't get out of the car, and definitely don't shout!"

After being reminded, Madison went to the driver's seat, slowly started the RV, and followed Tyrannosaurus Rex towards Ennis.

Eugene then drifted in place, leaving himself behind the RV, cursing and pounding on the steering wheel, saying something incoherently.

After driving for about ten kilometers in the direction of Ennis, the Tyrannosaurus Rex gradually stopped, and the RV and Ford naturally stopped as well.

Gavin jumped out of the car, grabbed an 8x scope, went to the RV, took a running start, grabbed the roof of the RV, and flipped himself up onto the vehicle.

Watching Gavin's nimble movements, Eugene, who had just gotten out of the car, clicked his tongue in amazement and grinned mischievously.

"Promise me, quarterback, you absolutely mustn't turn into a zombie!"

"Even if you turn into a zombie ten thousand times, my boss will still be fine. Shut your stinking mouth."

Madison, who got out of the car, elbowed Eugene, making him stagger, and then looked up at Gavin on the roof.

Gavin, with his 8x scope in hand, looked at the vast horde of zombies in the distance and couldn't help but feel a chill run down his spine.

This horde of zombies is definitely more than a thousand; Gavin thinks there are at least three thousand of them!

Because Gavin saw the scale of a high school student's holiday in his previous life when he was looking at the zombie horde!

At this moment, the horde of zombies, at least a kilometer away from him, had not only completely taken over the road, but had also formed a zombie roadblock nearly seventy meters long.

The edge of the zombie horde slowly spread outwards towards the surrounding woods.

After observation, Gavin determined that the zombies in the sprint had completely lost sight of their target.

They generally behave like the previous gas station zombies, switching from sprinting to jogging, and keep running in the direction where their target disappeared.

However, during the chase, if a zombie falls or hits a new obstacle, it may cause serious injury.

A zombie that gets back up may not necessarily go in the original direction.

Gavin observed for more than twenty seconds and spotted three zombies that had fallen.

One of them remained in place, spinning around, while the other two fallen zombies trotted off in different directions and disappeared into the forest.

As for Gavin's core concern, it is the crossroads that determine their fate.

Gavin shook his head. Even with an 8x scope, he couldn't see the fork in the road from the RV, which meant the zombie horde had crossed the fork at least a kilometer or two!

After confirming the result, Gavin jumped out of the RV and waved to Madison.

"There's no chance at the crossroads, let's go to Palmer, hurry up."

"Don't worry, Gavin, maybe we can even have a barbecue by the artificial lake and take a nap."

Madison responded optimistically, and Gavin patted his arm before going to the back of the pickup truck and pulling out two glass bottles of Coke.

After tossing Madison a bottle, Gavin came up to Eugene with another bottle of Coke, tossed it to him, and said...

"Follow me for a moment, I'll find a suitable place to leave the road."

"For the sake of Coke, I'll open my eyes wide in disbelief."

As Eugene answered, he raised his boot and slammed it heavily against the mouth of the Coke bottle, then brought the Coke, cooled by the cold wind, to his lips and took a swig.

"what……"

Eugene let out a comfortable breath, raised his Coke to Gavin, and laughed heartily.

"Only glass-bottled Coke is authentic, thank you Mexico!"

Gavin knew what Eugene was talking about. There are two main types of cola commonly found in the United States: the glass-bottled one is imported from Mexico and is relatively expensive, containing added sucrose.

Meanwhile, American Coca-Cola adds cheaper corn syrup and uses plastic bottles that don't require additional environmental fees. Can the taste be the same?
