Chapter 281 Enjoy Life
The following morning, Lynn received an urgent intelligence report from headquarters—Alex, one of the key figures in the experimental organization, had successfully escaped and was being tracked to Las Vegas. This news instantly made Lynn tense. Although they had destroyed the second base, Alex's escape meant that the experimental organization's conspiracy was not over. This man not only played a crucial role in the progress of the experimental program, but also likely possessed key information that could unveil the entire experimental organization.
"We can't waste any more time," Lynn said to Mark in a deep voice. "Alex won't stop. Las Vegas is a complex place with a high turnover of people and a lot of underground forces. His escape plan is likely already being supported by someone behind the scenes."
Mark nodded, his expression equally grave: "We need to act quickly and not give him any breathing room."
They quickly packed their gear and headed to the airport. The plane took off in the morning sunlight, heading towards Las Vegas. Inside the cabin, Lynn remained silent, his eyes fixed on the window, lost in thought. Alex's escape meant more danger and uncertainty. Lynn had a hunch that Alex's escape wasn't just a simple matter of evading capture; this time, he might have a much deeper plan.
Lynn and Mark sat in the cabin, a brief silence falling between them. The plane gradually broke through the clouds, heading towards Las Vegas. Lynn's unease and anxiety intensified. He remembered Kate's warning, reminding him not only to pay attention to the case's progress but also to protect himself at all times. He understood that Kate's concerns were not unfounded; every action he took involved the safety of many others, especially when facing a dangerous figure like Alex. Any negligence could have disastrous consequences.
Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps; neon lights illuminate the night, and countless secrets are hidden within its dazzling facade. Upon arrival, Lynn and Mark immediately began tracking Alex's whereabouts. According to their intelligence, Alex appears to be hiding in a high-end hotel in Las Vegas. This hotel appears glamorous on the outside, but its interior is an extremely secretive place involved in numerous underground transactions and illegal activities.
“We know his escape route, but this place isn’t like anywhere else,” Lynn told Mark in the command center. “The complexity of Las Vegas is that he can easily disappear into the crowd. We have to find his hiding place and not give him any chance to escape.”
They soon arrived near their target hotel, a luxurious casino hotel teeming with tourists. But Lynn knew that Alex might not be relying solely on the casino's noise to conceal his whereabouts; he had probably already found a hiding place and was waiting for the right moment to continue his plans.
"We can't just barge in and wait for him to make a move." Lynn turned to Mark. "Let's investigate the perimeter first, find any possible hiding places, and then slowly approach."
They split up, one investigating the area around the hotel while the other using the latest technology to scout out areas where Alex might be hiding. Lynn used high-tech drones to monitor all external activities at the hotel, while Mark infiltrated the hotel staff to gather information from within.
After several hours of intense investigation, Lynn finally found a crucial clue in the hotel's CCTV surveillance system. In an inconspicuous underground parking lot, Lynn discovered a black sedan, one of Alex's usual vehicles. The car was parked in a hidden spot, seemingly to avoid attracting attention, but Lynn's intuition told him that this car might be the only trace left by Alex.
"Mark, I've found a lead on him," Lynn whispered into the earpiece. "The black car is parked in the underground parking lot. I have a feeling he's hiding there."
Upon receiving the instructions, Mark acted swiftly, searching the hotel interior for possible passageways and floors, eventually confirming the exit from the underground parking garage to the basement. This clue narrowed their search to the most critical area.
As night fell, the streets of Las Vegas remained bustling, neon lights illuminating the city in a dazzling display, but Lynn and Mark's mood grew increasingly heavy. They entered the underground parking garage, the surroundings quiet yet tense, the darkness unsettling. Lynn and Mark walked towards each other, their eyes wary, each step taken with extreme care, trying to avoid making a sound.
When they reached the end of the parking lot, they found the black sedan parked in a secluded corner, completely empty, with no apparent unusual activity around it. But Lynn knew that Alex wouldn't be caught so easily; he wouldn't expose himself so readily.
"Keep moving forward, stay alert," Lynn said in a low voice, his eyes fixed on his surroundings, his heart pounding faster.
They followed the car's tracks, when suddenly, they heard faint footsteps coming from a corner of the underground parking lot. Lynn immediately stopped and signaled to Mark. The two silently approached the source of the sound. Just as they reached the vicinity of an abandoned storage room, Lynn saw a faint ray of light shining through a crack in the door.
"He's in there," Lynn whispered. "Get ready, move out now."
Mark nodded, and the two quickly approached the door to the storage room, peering through the crack. Alex was standing in a dimly lit corner, seemingly talking to someone. Lynn's heart tightened; just as he had expected, Alex wasn't alone, accompanied by a burly-looking bodyguard.
"We have to be quick," Lynn thought to himself, calculating the time. "We can't give them time to react."
He signaled to Mark to flank from another direction, while he prepared to break through from the front. The two coordinated perfectly, their movements almost synchronized. Lynn swiftly pushed open the storage room door, almost simultaneously coming face-to-face with Alex.
"You can't escape, Alex," Lynn said coldly, pointing his gun at Alex.
Alex turned around and his expression changed the instant he saw Lynn. He sneered, "You think this will stop me? You're wrong, Lynn. You have no idea that what you're chasing isn't me, but the whole plan behind it all."
"Stop talking nonsense." Lynn's voice remained calm. "You have no way out now."
Just then, Alex's bodyguard suddenly drew his pistol and opened fire on Lynn and Mark. The two reacted quickly, leaping to avoid the first volley. Lynn almost instinctively fired, hitting the bodyguard in the shoulder. The bodyguard fell to the ground, the gun slipping from his hand, and Lynn quickly ran over and seized the weapon.
Alex clearly knew he could no longer escape, and his face turned grim and furious: "You really think catching me will end all this? The experiment has only just begun, and the real core of the plan is far more complex than you imagine."
"You've been dreaming all along." Lynn approached, his voice even colder. "Your scheme has failed. You have no more chances."
Ultimately, Alex was successfully subdued, and the leader of the experimental organization was finally arrested. Lynn and Mark took Alex back to Manhattan and handed him over to headquarters for interrogation.
The next day, Lynn had just finished a day's work when his phone rang, breaking the silence. Kate's name appeared on the screen. When Lynn answered, Kate's voice came through: "Hi, Lynn, how have you been? Busy, huh?"
"You know, Kate, once you start working, it's almost impossible to stop," Lynn said wearily. "But at least there's some progress, the case is still moving forward."
"I know you must be under a lot of pressure right now," Kate smiled, "but I was just thinking, shouldn't you take a few days off and relax? After all, after working so much stress for so long, even you need to catch your breath."
Lynn sighed softly, looking down at the pile of documents on the table. "A break is nice, but you know, work always comes knocking."
“I understand your sense of responsibility,” Kate’s tone softened, “but you also need to take care of yourself. How can you continue to bear so much pressure? I’ve booked a place not far from Manhattan. The scenery is amazing, and the environment is quiet. It’ll be perfect for you to relax.”
Lynn was silent for a moment, then finally nodded. "Okay, Kate, maybe it's time to take a break. Thanks for reminding me."
"It's decided then! But I have a small request," Kate said casually.
"What are your requirements?" Lynn asked, puzzled.
"Hmm, I was thinking, since we're going to relax, why not let Gwen come along? She's been pretty busy lately, so this is a good opportunity for her to unwind," Kate said with a playful smile.
Lynn was taken aback, completely unprepared for Kate to mention Gwen. Gwen was his sister, who had been so busy with her studies and work lately that she barely had time to breathe. Lynn knew that his sister had always cared deeply for him and often silently supported him. Although he had always been a strict older brother to Gwen, her care and companionship remained a warm presence in his heart.
"Gwen?" Lynn paused, somewhat surprised. "You really want to take her with you?"
"Of course," Kate smiled, "she needs to relax just like you. Besides, since we've both decided to take a few days off, we should at least spend some time together, right?"
Lynn thought for a moment and finally decided to agree to Kate's suggestion: "Okay, since you've arranged it this way, I won't say anything more. She needs to relax too, no problem."
"Great! Now we can go on vacation together and not have to think about work at all." Kate's voice was filled with excitement. "I'll contact Gwen in a bit and tell her to get ready. We'll leave first thing tomorrow morning."
Lynn nodded, and after hanging up the phone, he seemed to feel much more relaxed. The pressure at work had left him with almost no time to rest, but at this moment, he genuinely felt a sense of anticipation for the next few days. Going out with Kate and Gwen, temporarily escaping his busy work, and enjoying a moment of peace—perhaps that was what he truly needed.
The next morning, Lynn packed his bags and prepared to leave. He didn't tell Gwen that he had already accepted Kate's offer, but planned to surprise her when they met. Lynn walked into the living room and saw that Gwen was already dressed and getting ready to go out.
"Gwen, are you ready?" Lynn walked over with a smile, her tone relaxed. "You should be ready for today's trip, right?"
Gwen turned to look at her brother, a hint of curiosity in her eyes: "A trip? Bro, what do you mean? Didn't we always say we'd go when I had time?"
Lynn couldn't help but smile, suppressing her laughter: "Kate thinks you should rest, and that you've been too tired lately. I promised her we'd go on vacation together today."
Gwen paused, clearly surprised: "Wait a minute, you mean Kate has already arranged something? And you agreed to it? I always thought you were so busy that you didn't have time to rest."
"I am busy, but I need to take a break every now and then," Lynn said with a smile, looking at her sister. "Anyway, we haven't relaxed in too long. Let's relax today."
A hint of surprise flashed in Gwen's eyes: "Really? That's great! I also need a rest; I've been under so much pressure lately. Thank you, brother."
Lynn smiled and nodded, heading with Gwen towards the destination Kate had arranged. They chatted along the way, and Lynn felt an increasing closeness between himself and his sister. Although he had always been somewhat strict with Gwen in the past, he now realized that his feelings stemmed more from care and a sense of responsibility towards her. Gwen was a bright spot in his life; no matter what, she always managed to infect him with her optimism and sunshine, making him feel the beauty of the world.
As the car drove towards the resort, the scenery outside the window gradually changed from the bustling city of Manhattan to the tranquility of the suburbs. Shaded by green trees and surrounded by mountains, the resort was located in a secluded nature reserve, far from the city's hustle and bustle, with fresh air and a peaceful environment. Kate had already arranged their accommodations and prepared several relaxing activities so the three of them could completely unwind.
When they arrived at the resort, Lynn and Gwen immediately felt the comfort of its tranquility. The facilities were simple yet exquisite, the lakeside cabins offered perfect privacy, and the surrounding green mountains and crystal-clear lake water created a serene and picturesque scene.
"We should enjoy these few days," Kate said with a smile. "You can do whatever you want, swim, take a walk, or just sit quietly by the lake and enjoy the view."
Lynn took a deep breath, feeling that the air here was much fresher than in the city, as if everything had been purified. "Yes, we really need to relax. Here, at least for a few days, we don't have to think about work."
Gwen looked around excitedly, "This place is so beautiful, bro, you're not kidding me, Kate, you really know how to pick a spot."
Kate smiled. "I know you've all been busy for too long. This is a good opportunity to enjoy life." (End of Chapter)
