Chapter 5: Organizing the Manor and Crafting Equipment
In 286 of the Conquest Calendar, the rebellion of King Balon of the Iron Islands was quelled, and after six months of preparation, Inis set sail once more. Oris, having received permission, accompanied Margaret to the port of Pentos to see Inis off. Oris waved vigorously from the harbor; although his father was not close to him, Inis had at least provided him with a safe haven in this treacherous world, a place where he could grow freely.
As the large ship gradually sailed away, Oris took six-year-old Pochi and left the harbor. The two little boys, led by Margaret, returned to the manor. That night, Oris pondered the manor renovation plans for the next day.
The first step is to remove some of the disobedient sailors and change the estate's industrial structure. Currently, most of the estate is undeveloped, mainly used for growing wheat and grapes, resulting in low land utilization. Furthermore, the estate lacks a pillar industry. The core issue for the estate's development is how to develop industry without attracting envy and ensuring the sailors' well-being.
The next morning, Oris found Margaret, and with her help, he dismissed some of the unruly sailors. He also recruited laborers to renovate the manor, starting with digging a fishpond in the backyard to breed common freshwater fish. Afterward, he built a fence around the fishpond to house chickens.
They then expanded the estate's orchards, using the grapes and pears produced to make fruit wine, and then used the lees from the winemaking process to feed fish fry and chicks.
The brandy was then distilled and sold to the governor of Pentos. To avoid the governor's attention, the Oris Estate had to remain a producer and not participate in the sales business.
After a series of reforms by Oris, the estate remained relatively stable during the year Innis was away, and some expansion was carried out. Oris hadn't originally planned to expand, but Lambda told him that everyone knew they had made money from brandy, and if they didn't expand, it would be too late.
Money that's been sitting in our hands for so long is bound to attract the attention of thieves and mercenaries. So, after each long-standing debt is settled, Oris will carry out a small-scale expansion and purchase some supplies to enhance the estate's resources.
The year after Innis left, eight-year-old Oris began to step into the limelight. While continuing to manage the manor's public business, he recruited a group of blacksmiths to begin forging weapons and equipment for the manor in case of unforeseen circumstances, so that if things changed in the future, he could lead the core members of the manor to have the strength to fight back.
By the year 290 of the Conquest Calendar, it had been four years since Inis left the manor. Oris had grown into a ten-year-old boy, and his height was already comparable to that of a thirteen or fourteen-year-old. Oris's companion, Pochi, was even more impressive, having grown to a full 1.8 meters tall, his height no less than that of an adult.
That day, when Oris and Poch returned from delivering wine as usual, they found a ragged old man at the manor gate. Before Oris could get a good look at him, Poch had already jumped off the carriage to examine the old man's condition. "Oris, this old man has knife wounds, like he was chopped with an axe."
Oris didn't want to get involved after hearing Poch's words, since the covetousness of the manor's wealth from various factions had never disappeared since Innis's disappearance. But before Oris could speak, Poch simply put the old man in the car.
Oris then had a chance to observe more closely. The old man's beard was shaved off for some reason, leaving his pale hair coiled into a Mediterranean style on top of his head. The wounds on his body from the axe were still bleeding. "He's probably a robber. Let's take him back and treat him; the rest is up to fate," Oris said. After speaking, Oris picked up Pochi and led the old man back to the manor.
Poch took the old man to Lambda's workshop, where Lambda was now mainly responsible for the distillation of brandy and the treatment of patients on the estate. According to him, he had studied in the Citadel for a period of time when he was young and had a basic understanding of herbs and medicine.
After rescuing the old man, Oris didn't think much of it. He only instructed the sailors not to let the old man wander around and gave no other special instructions. However, three days later, a sailor suddenly reported that the old man that Poch had rescued had woken up and wanted to see him. Having nothing else to do, Oris immediately went to Lambda's workshop and met the old man. Compared to his previous weakness, the old man's face had regained some color.
"Are you the one who saved me?" the old man asked, forcing himself to stay upright.
"Yes, my brother and I went to Pentos to sell wine, and when we came back we found you lying on the ground. Were you robbed, or were you being chased?" Oris asked, stepping forward. The old man didn't answer, but simply lowered his head so Oris couldn't see his expression. "What's your name?" Oris asked again.
"Tob, Tob-Mot." Oris was taken aback by this answer. Actually, the name Tob-Mot wasn't well-known in the original work, but Oris had paid special attention to it before. When Inis told him he had accumulated a considerable amount of Valyrian steel, Oris had planned to recast those parts.
The only skilled craftsmen currently capable of recasting Valyrian steel, besides the artisans of Corhol, are Tob-Mort. Oris had originally planned to travel to King's Landing to have Tob-Mort forge the golden dragons he had accumulated over the years.
And then this guy showed up at my doorstep. "You're a blacksmith," Oris said without waiting for Tob-Mot's reply. "I can tell you're a good blacksmith just by the calluses on your hands."
"You escaped from Kohor, didn't you? The wounds on your body must have been inflicted by that bearded monk when you were discovered during your escape. It seems you acquired some remarkable skills in Kohor." After Oris finished speaking, Tob-Mot stared at Oris with astonishment in his eyes. The shock in his eyes was impossible to hide.
In truth, Oris wasn't a particularly skilled deduction expert; he simply knew the answer beforehand, making the deduction process easy for him. "Let me guess at Kohol's core technology. You've learned the recasting technique for Valyrian steel, haven't you?"
After Oris finished speaking, Tob-Mot could no longer remain calm and fell off the bed. "Looks like my guess was right. Don't be nervous. I happen to have a batch of Valyrian metal parts on hand. Melt them down and forge a sword for me, and I'll consider it your departure, okay?"
Hearing Oris's next words, Tob-Mort finally felt relieved. As long as he could leave Essos and return to Westeros, he would surely become the best blacksmith in Westeros with his unique forging skills.
