Warhammer: Primarch's Life from the Beginning
Chapter 32 The Storm Arrives
"Sir, a certain signal has been detected in the waterway ahead."
The first mate, responsible for observing the harpooners, broke the deathly silence on the bridge. The old-school Imperial Navy officer stared at the radar screen in front of him, his brow furrowed.
Leo became interested and slowly sat up straight from his lazy posture on the command seat.
"Oh? An ambush?"
These past few days have been incredibly boring, and Leo longed to relax through combat, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. It wasn't that no one on the ship was willing to spar with him; his nuns subordinates had been eager to try. But they were all fragile mortals, easily broken. What could Leo do? Play house with the nuns?
"It doesn't seem so, Your Highness." The first mate tapped on the control panel, his voice hesitant. "We've detected a massive object floating near our course, but there's no sign of life."
"Project it onto the main screen," Leo commanded.
Since the people inside the ship cannot see the outside scenery during subspace travel, they can only rely on the warship's ancient and powerful radar system to perceive the environment.
Kara was not with Leo at the moment; she had gone to another part of the ship to check the defenses of the Holy Commandment.
The main control screen flickered a few times, and green lines and dots outlined a blurry 3D image.
It was a strange outline, several times larger than the Holy Commandment, yet its shape was chaotic and fragmented. It resembled an ellipsoid formed by the wreckage of several different types of warships, compressed together by the currents of the warp.
Leo stared at the thing for a few seconds before he remembered what it was.
"A space wreck," he said softly. "Who knows how many years it's been drifting here."
The ships that crashed in the accident, over a long period of time, attracted and squeezed each other, forming this spectacle in the Warhammer world.
These vast ruins may harbor the most malevolent heretics and traitors: gene-stealers, traitors, pirates, orcs, and even more terrifying creatures. However, just as the humblest seashell, nestled in the filth and debris of the seabed, can give birth to priceless pearls, these terrifying ruins also hold immeasurable treasures: STC technology templates, weapons of the Dark Ages, or even the equipment of an entire Space Marine chapter…
As the two colossal vessels gradually closed the distance in the subspace, the Geller Field of the Holy Commandment began to deform slightly due to the interference of the other's magnetic field.
The Holy Commandment sailed past the side of the wrecked spaceship, and an unsettling sound swept past everyone's ears.
It was a whisper that scratched at the depths of the crew's minds, as if thousands of dead souls were wailing on that ghost ship. Several of the less composed young men covered their ears, and some even began to shed tears uncontrollably.
Seeing these reactions, the combat nuns patrolling around them were already drawing their guns, staring intently at them, ready to shoot any crew member who was mentally broken at any moment.
Leo roared, his voice completely drowning out all the noise in the bridge.
"Stay calm! Don't listen to those noises!"
This shout carried a strange power, silencing much of the whispers around them.
Although the situation was extremely bizarre and the sound was chilling, the wreckage did not show any intention to attack.
With Captain Catherine's command, the Holy Commandment accelerated, gradually leaving the derelict spaceship behind and fading out of the probe's range.
.
.
A sudden, piercing alarm blared from the loudspeaker.
The people on the bridge were startled, and some rushed to the control panel to loudly repeat the source of the alarm.
Catherine walked slowly to Leo's side to report.
"The navigator reports that the tides have changed and the ship has inevitably sailed into a storm."
After she finished speaking, her gaze swept across the constantly distorted flight path projection at the top of the main screen.
"The wrecked spaceship we just saw was pushed here by the subspace wave ahead."
Then she began to direct the entire ship's operations.
The Holy Commandment's speed gradually decreased, unnecessary compartments were sealed off by gates, and the ship entered energy-saving mode, diverting excess energy to the subspace engines...
Commands were issued one after another without a single wasted word, and Catherine's fingers slid across the data panel as she spoke.
The next second, a violent torrent of energy swept over the steel behemoth.
With a creaking sound, the course began to veer, and the Holy Commandment was tossed about wildly in the raging waves, only to be brought back on course thanks to the efforts of the navigator and the bridge crew. A continuous tremor came from the bridge floor, and the chandeliers and suspended instruments swayed from side to side.
The oracle on the bridge sounded a warning, and a series of red dots were rapidly approaching from the farthest point detected on the ship's holographic projection.
"Enemy sighted! They...they're here!" the first mate's voice was hoarse.
Deep purple mist surged from the distorted subspace vortex surrounding the Holy Commandment. The mist twisted rapidly, forming branches from which slender, living creatures fell one after another. They tore apart their pupal shells and, upon birth, charged toward the ship like cannonballs, as if the life on board was food prepared for their birth.
On the bridge, Catherine stared blankly at the records on the radar screen as the demonic inquisitor began issuing a series of commands into the communication channel.
The cannons were loaded, the torpedoes were preheated, the massive rocket launchers began to idle, space mines were deployed from the surface of the battleship, and alarms sounded alternately.
She turned to look at the command post and found that Leo had already left, and the nun guards beside him were nowhere to be seen.
Rumble!!
A tremor ran through the hull of the Holy Commandment. The raging Slaanesh demons triggered the minefield surrounding the ship, causing a series of explosions. The blessed flames incinerated the demons that passed by them, and the flames quickly dissipated after scorching the hull.
But half of the monsters survived. Small holes were gradually poked into the Geller Field, cracks appeared in the ship's shields, and the demons broke through the shields, turning into a ball of warp energy, and then reorganizing themselves on the floors of the ship's various corridors.
.
.
Kara, who had just finished inspecting the statue of the Holy Emperor, also heard the noise and hurriedly moved through the passageways.
Soon, a deep purple liquid seeped into the walls in front of and behind her, and clumps of writhing objects fell to the floor. These snake-tailed, human-bodied monsters could not stand up and could only crawl on the ground, twisting their long lower bodies.
This is subspace, which is their home turf.
A Slaanesh demon raised its long, thin head, its facial mucous membranes splitting open to form a gaping maw. It was in a particularly good mood today; the fear on the ship drew them in. Soon, many more souls awaiting torment would be offered to the perfect, indulgent lord, and it couldn't wait to savor the dying emotions of the girl before it.
But just as it stuck out its long, thin tongue, everything went black.
Eh?
A chainsaw sword sliced through its skull and down into its ribs, splattering juices and bits of flesh everywhere.
Kara pulled her chainsaw from the corpse, quickly bent down and swung it backward, cleaving apart another demon that lunged at her from behind; she wasn't even wearing a helmet.
Her left hand raised the explosive gun, the muzzle almost touching the third monster's face, and with a bang, she smashed half of its head into a bloody pulp. The fourth serpent demon dangled from the pipe above, its claws reaching for her eye sockets. Kara spun around, her chainsaw sword swung back, first severing the hand, then turning and kicking it against the wall, piercing its throat with her sword. The demons convulsed and collapsed to the ground, dissipating into thick smoke.
Damn it, you stupid demon.
Kara's iron halo lit up with golden light, and she felt the vibration of the explosive gun at her fingertips. It was the unique feedback from the Soul when she got a headshot. The impact climbed up her arm and made her relax inexplicably. She couldn't help but hum a song in her heart.
There's no need to keep smiling anymore; this is her own leisure time.
She hurried across the fork in the road, where a crew member possessed by the demon Slaanesh was staggering toward her.
"...Save me...Sister."
That man had been kindly helped by Kara before and had even greeted her warmly. Now, his face was cracked open, his teeth had grown from his mouth to the sides of his face, and he was making inhuman, sticky noises from his throat.
Kara walked by, not even bothering to look, raised her hand and smashed his head, kicked the deeply mutated headless corpse aside, and spat on the ground.
She thought to herself, "This must feel awful. I'm desperately being controlled by the demon. When I see the savior I've been hoping for appear, she shoots me with a look of utter contempt."
Normally, she could pretend to be a gentle and kind confidante and go over to help, but unfortunately, that person had been completely possessed by the devil.
Then you can't blame her.
Humming a little tune, she rushed towards the direction of the loud noise, and the monsters in the road that had just shown their heads were blown through the brain by her explosives. Swift, ruthless, and devoid of any superfluous emotion, she seemed like a completely different person from her usual gentle and unassuming self.
She arrived at the weapons deck, an area heavily invaded by the Slaanesh demons, who were attempting to break down the defenses of the macro torpedo operators.
The Imperial Navy formed an entire defensive line to block the frantically flailing monsters. The Slaanesh demons' movements confused the soldiers, and as they dodged and weaved, the claws of several serpent monsters aimed straight for the heads of the soldiers in formation.
*Pfft!* *Snap!*
The soldier removed his hand from his eyes and saw a nun covered in blood standing outside the defensive line, the iron halo around her neck emitting a golden light.
Okay Kara, work time has begun. Don't let them see. Keep smiling.
Kara forcefully suppressed the fierceness on her face, her lips slowly lifting, and her eyes softening again.
She turned her head. "You can't cover your eyes during battle. Disarm yourselves, soldiers." She deliberately slowed her speech. "Keep going. I'll protect you."
Your voice should be soft and steady, making them feel supported, just like my younger sister taught me when I was little.
The soldier, holding a laser gun in his arms, nodded blankly.
She suppressed her smile and charged forward, her chainsaw sword slicing through the approaching demons one by one, her slingshot shattering the heads of several serpent demons. Flesh and blood splattered onto the deck and railings, while laser cover fire from the army behind her created a web of fire.
The incapacitated technicians were evacuated under cover, while a naval soldier urged them to retreat quickly, firing at the monsters in the distance.
A lecherous demon noticed them and charged forward, but the laser gun in the soldier's hand suddenly malfunctioned, and the people behind him were too frightened to move.
Kara noticed the battle raging out of the corner of her eye. Startled, she turned and raised her explosive gun, firing several shots, but the high-speed monster dodged them all. The next moment, the soldier was torn to pieces by the demon.
No, please don't do it again.
Fragments of memories suddenly flashed through her mind. Long ago, in this very chaos, the same scene unfolded again, and once more she failed to protect the person in front of her.
In that moment of distraction, several demons broke through the defenses, their claws lunging straight for Kara's neck; she had no time to react.
A golden streak of spiritual energy swept across the battlefield.
Leo's figure had already landed among the enemies. A powerful, scorching light spread out and swept past, and the demons on the field disintegrated into ashes amidst screams.
The battle is over.
The soldiers opened their eyes wide and looked around, only to find that the passages on both sides were burning with golden flames. The Primarch had already taken care of all the nearby enemies before he arrived!
Leo turned to look at Kara, his eyes filled with a question as he saw her furrowed brows and cursing.
Kara realized that her embarrassing behavior had been seen by the Primarch, so she hurriedly lowered her eyes, forced a smile, and spoke in a calm voice.
"It's nothing, just some subspace energy interference that distracted me a bit."
When I lie, the old, petal-shaped scar behind my ear starts to burn again.
Leo didn't expose her, but just frowned. "It's okay. Most of these demons were kept out, but a small group has infiltrated several parts of the ship at the same time."
"I've already dispatched combat nuns to provide support in various locations. We just received a report that a fierce battle has broken out in the navigation room. Come with me to provide support immediately."
"Yes...yes, Your Highness."
